What does it mean for gear to crash?

What does crashing mean and how do you know if it happens. ?

What does crashing mean and how do you know if it happens. ?
Basically meaning that if you made your gear the "good stuff" got suspended from the oil you used (ie. cottonseed, sesame oil, etc.) So the "good stuff" is at the bottom and the oil is at the top. To try and give you a visual, picture salad dressing oil. Before you use the salad dressing oil you can see the separation. That's why you shake the oil before use. Crashing is something like that. Only it's not as easily solved as a good shake.  :-\
