Title: Biggest pet peeve at the gym?

- When people rack plates with the inside facing outward.

- When people don't rack their weights when they finish.

- People who, when curling, go a fraction of the way down. Also, when they don't go all the way up.

- People who walk around with straps and use them for about every exercise. It's even worse when they use them for chest/shoulder/tri exercises.

- People who walk around with little notebooks to chart everything they do. I don't even see big powerlifters doing that (however, if they did, they'd be excused).

Ha, nicely said!! I'll also add:

-People who camp out on a piece of equipment just to chat.

-Horrid top forty music - that you hear over and over and over and over again lol

-People who talk non stop on their phones

-Those who wear cologne to "cover up" their BO - I walk away gagging with tears in my eyes from the stench.... lol

There's a guy that comes in every Saturday and does the same bench thing every week.  He goes about 165# tops.  Loads up the bar with anywhere from 315# to 385# - I think he's even gone 405#.
He straps on this sling shot thing, unracks it with a spotter, has someone else hold an 8 inch board on his chest, and proceeds to arch his back up and down never actually moving the weight.  ::)  I don't know why, but it bugs the crap out of me.

I prefer to help women unrack only lighter weights myself. Don't want to strain myself or anything.  If I notice a leg press loaded up situation, I usually act like I'm having a really interesting conversation on my cell phone. or really getting into my music.  If all else fails, I start shadow-boxing really intensely.

My gym peev's:

the person who needs to have the 20,30 & 40lbs dumbbells with them so they can do a circuit of some P90x routine.

no joke I see it all the time, curls in the power rack. it really does happen.

the guy who trains arms/shoulders and chest 3 days a wk.... and nothing else.

we got a guy who gets nose bleeds everyother wk from deadlifts but he doesn't clean it up off the floor!

my friends who walk in and just drop their belt/wraps/keys/phone/wallet in the middle of the workout area and like i'm a bastard when I suggest they get a gym bag for their stuff so I can stop kicking their shit out of the way so i don't step on it.

the two guys who want to "work in" on the leg press but can't do half the weight I am doing!! then they talk to each other about chic shit during thier reps. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LOAD THE BAR WITH SOME SERIOUS FUCKING WEIGHT AND WORKOUT!!!

oh, shit... time to go workout. I feel motivated just thinking of the crap that pisses me off. >:(

Oh Christ....here's mine....and don't mind the commentary....

Idiots who circuit train during busy times - These idiots need to realize that they don't own the equipment and that others are paying to use the equipment too.

Shadow boxers - These morons need to realize that they are in the wrong gym. There are plenty of martial arts dojo's and boxing academy's that can accomadate these goofs. Translation = "Hey everyone look at me...I can't dumbbell press 60 lbs but i'll show them what a tough guy I am by throwing hooks and uppercuts.  ::)"

People who moan like elephants - You had better have at least 4 plates aside on that bar before you even make a peep. I know guys who barley make a sound deadlifting 6 plates aside. Translation = "Hey everyone, look at me...I just completed a set of dumbell curls with 40lbs  ::)"

People who leave towels / bottles on equipment = if your not using it, put it elsewhere. You don't own it.

People who leave dumbbells all over the floor - No etiquette what so ever.

Women who use flat benches as stair climbers - Its not a fucking stair climber and your ruining the bench. Go to Bally's for that shit.

People who do push ups and chin ups - These people need to quit or get their head checked. You can do that shit at home in your cellar. It amazes me how with all the array of dumbbells and machines and hammer strengths how people still invent their own excersises. These of course are the same people who weight 165lbs in 2005 and in 2011 they still look the same and weight the same.

Self righteous naturals - These guys are the biggest joke of all. "I never take steroids and never will...drugs are bad! I saw on CNN!". Oh really? I suppose you refused your polio shots as well.  ::) These guys take pride in gaining a half a pound a year. Then when they get a headache, they will go to the drug store and buy EXTRA STRENGTH advil and pop them like pez....but steroids are bad because the TV says so....wow...

Trainers who think they know it all - These idiots walk around like they own the place with their mind blowing 150lb physiques who took their 1 day certification test and now all of a sudden they are Charles Glass.

Steroid abusers - These guys weigh 180lbs....two months later...they weigh 235lbs of water retention, no strength whatsoever and they think that qualifies them to wear tank tops, stringy tops, fag tops, etc. Two months later they are back to 180lbs, burnt receptors with sweaters in the gym hiding their pathetic 5000mg a week physique that withered away with the wind. These idiots also never heard of nutrition, dicipline, hard work or supplementation.

Tall guys 6ft plus that think they're "big" because they weight 225lbs - Your not big. At your height and weight you should be triple your size. Epic jealousy of these morons that blame their ZERO strength to "long limbs" WTF??? Bottom line, you can't lift the weight. Your weak as shit. Admit it and move on.

Older people with pot bellies that weight 160lbs but they're doing wrist curls on the one bench that you need and are waiting on - enough said.

Title: Re: Biggest pet peeve at the gym?
Post by: Montague on May 25, 2011, 06:15:17 PM
Damn, there's so many - too many, actually, to recount here, but a couple that stand out:

When I trained mid-mornings for a while, I occasionally saw a guy - maybe in his 50’s - read a newspaper between sets on the leg press.
He must’ve read entire articles before going again; his ass wouldn’t leave that seat for 20 mins.
I never said anything because the owner was usually there & saw it, but also because it’d be a pain-in-the-ass to keep loading/unloading the plates.

Another goodie is the people who would use the reverse hyper bench as a coffee table for their drinks and other “accessories.”

However, I tend not to mind anything unless it directly affects me/my training.
QED - I couldn’t care less if a guy leaves something loaded with (up to) the weight I’m going to start with.
Yeah, he did the wrong thing, but it worked to my advantage, so I‘ll take it.

Likewise, I don’t care how far down someone squats; I don’t watch other guys.
I don’t care what they do or how they’re dressed.
Just don’t impede my workout.

yea he does. He's such a fucking clown. I remember when I first started at the gym, he made nasty remarks about me being fat. I started changing times going (not because of him). Last year, he was all smiles and saying hi. Then had the balls to ask me out (which I don't date anyone from the gym). I said oh you don't remember me. I was the fatty you used to make fun of in the am. He stood there ghost white.

Yea, he still goes and tries to be nice, but I just roll my eyes at him.

I seen one 50yr old tool doing incline dumbbell presses in the leg press once because the seat is on an "incline"....wow....he tied up the whole machine for nothing.

Or how about thsee older losers that are on a smith machine (the one time you actually want to use it), they know your waiting for it, they see you waiting for it and they still take their fucking time with no worries in the world. I give idiots diplomatic tune ups at least once a week at the gym. Fuck that...i'm paying to use the stuff too.

Thx, doll,

In the end, I really don't care what people do as long as it doesn't affect me or my training. Mind you, these observations that I mentioned above are just idiodicies that I encounter on a day to day basis at my gym. I try to tunnel vision because if I didn't, someone would be going through a table by the end of the night.  :)

Ok, another pet peeve.

Guys trying to max out on bench and have three spotters.

One to take the bar off the rack, and two on the sides, and then all three assist  the lift and the guy gets off the bench pounds his chest like he did a huge lift.

Fact:  if you need three guys to do a life - its too fucking heavy!

-People who talk non stop on their phones

Ha-ha!!!
An old buddy of mine used to call those guys "cock-talkers" because they seemed to socialize the most while naked in the locker room.
It seemed to be mostly older men in their 60's and up.

Another college friend of mine worked at a health club while going to school.
He said he'd often have a problem when working until close because because there was a sizeable group of guys who would gather in the steam room and do "stuff" with each other.
The front desk would inevitably get complaints about it, and my buddy would be the one to have to go in and tell them to knock it off.
He used to hate that! ;D

Inconsistent rule enforcement regarding "dress code" at Planet Fitness

I can't wear my bandana, because the "rule" is only ball caps, but almost every black woman wears either something that looks like a shower cap or else some kind of head rag to look like Aunt Jemima.  :-X

Eh, Andy, that's no great sin.  I was stuck at Planet Witless for about a year and a half or so after Gold's sold out and, one day, that stupid fucking siren was on the wall and "judgment free zone" was slathered everywhere.

Apart from small dumbbell racks, PF does tend to have everything you need to train fairly effectively.  The problem is, the traffic is so high, good luck finding an unoccupied flat or incline bench.  Or even a Smith machine, for that matter.  When I still trained at a PF, I quickly figured out that, if I didn't lift at just and so time of morning, I'd have to sit around waiting for a bunch of jerkoffs to finish with a piece; asking to work in was like asking them if they'd like to be anally probed by a gang of Klingons.  (Besides, most of the fuckers bounce-pressed less weight than I'd warm up with, especially since these clowns benched 10 sets to failure three times/wk. and, on their "off" days, did 10 or more sets of Smith inclines to failure.  Even FLEX could've suggested them a better routine.)

But what really gets my goat about Planet Shitness is how they swear they're all anti-powerlifting, yet bench pressing, squatting AND deadlifting are still allowed (at least, they were at my chickenshit little Gastonia branch).  Weighted dips, even if you bring a dip belt from home?  Oooh, noooo! :D  That's "intimidating" and "more of a powerlifting thing" according to the hapless employees  ::)

Rather than argue with them, I just re-joined the first gym at which I lifted.  It'd since turned from a juiced-up BBer gym to a YMCA branch, but it was still exceptionally equipped and the traffic?  LOL.  I typically train around 10-11 a.m., at which time most of the poor souls in the place are 80-year-old hunchbacks loafing about a handful of Cybex pieces with one plate for tons of half-reps.

Low-traffic, well-equipped gyms are the shit.  The Gold's that just opened in town is probably superior to my gym overall, and it might even be cheaper; nonetheless, I can see as clear as the bottom of an inch-deep mountain stream that said Gold's will be yet another jacked-up social thing, with two or three times as many actual serious people occupying space and engaging in general bullshitting, not to mention the "gangs" who will occupy equipment 'til their posse is through with all of their bullshit guffawing, posturing and general nonsense.

Title: Re: Biggest pet peeve at the gym?
Post by: Andy Griffin on February 03, 2012, 03:13:41 PM
Traffic can be an issue for some, but i usually do my lifting before 5 a.m. so there are only about 6 people there.  I do interval/sprint training in the afternoons on non-lifting days.  I've never had an issue finding an available elliptical, but when I look over at the racks (my PF has 6 squat racks) there is usually a line at each one.

I think a lot has to do with the particular people on duty, how crowded the joint is, and if the manager is actually there at the moment regarding enforcing the anti-bb/pl rules.

9-people who dont understand when i say "can i work in"? ummm no i did not ask you how many sets you had left
10-dudes that want to shake or give you a pound even though your holding weights, just say hello and keep it moving
11-people that act out every song there listning too "i wear headphones" so all i see is useless movements out the corner of my eye
12-newbies that want to ask a ton of questions "how you get your size" what is that machine for? wait till after i work out and i will give you my complete attention, i know and understand we have to start somewhere but when im working out "WAIT"
13-gyms that dont have mirrors where they should be example you dont need a mirror in the stretching section however putting a mirror in front of the squat rack ummmm good idea why there isnt one is beyond me.
14-gyms that obviously whoever put this equipment on the floor does not work out ummm why would you put the leg press machine right next to the stationary bikes is once again beyond me.
15-the cleaning crew that cleans the lobby all day everyday but the rest of the gym is a disaster
16-not posting a sign there is no hot water when i enter the gym, i work out i want to shower before work and i find there is no hot water after i get undressed put a towel on and get in the shower....."DUH, POST A SIGN MORON"
17-water fountains with mucus in them from members spitting in them

21-being double billed for 2 or 3 months in a row and when i complain they offer me a $10 dollar smoothie card "HUH"??
22-dudes that roll the dumbells on the floor with there feet by kicking them and these are the weights there about to lift, HUH???
23- people who dont re-rack the weights and i have to go on a search of the entire gym for a 45lb dumbell this cuts into my gym time people i have a job to go to cant be looking for weights all freaking day.
24-im black so i can say this black dudes that use the "N" word very loudly at the gym with white people within earshot, just embarrasing.
25-trainers who dont find a need to ask if your done with the equipment they just put there clients there once you have stood up, just rude.
26-urinals in men locker room not having a side between you and the next urinal dont want to pull out my junk and have the next dude staring at me, put up a divider
27-gyms with way too many stairs to climb before you get to the weight area
28-gyms with cardio equipment facing the window with no view, ummmm i would rather look at the members working out turn this shit around.
29-dudes that work out in groups of 5 or 6 "WTF" really??? and then they ask you if they can work in with you
30-front desk people that have to say my name when i enter not just my first name but last name as well, ummm i may not want everybody within earshot knowing my first and last name "idiot"
31-jacked dudes that are constantly looking in the mirror and lifting there shirt after they do 2minutes of abs "sit the fuck down"
32- equipment that stays broken more then 48hrs
33-missing pins to put in the weight machines and you have to walk all around to find same size pin on different equipment to bring back and put in the weight machine...once again takes time out of my workout routine
34-aerobic classes that blast the music so loud till i cant hear my own headphones when i am on the weight floor
35-dudes that drop the weights does not matter the size 10lbs on up to 100lbs they just for some reason throw them down on the floor as hard as they can when they finish there set and walk around looking angry for some reason...."sit the fuck down"
36-dudes that use the assisted pullup dip machine the foot part as a tricep pull down machine, "REALLY"??? now i have to wait for you to work your triceps on the part i use to stand on to do pull-ups when the tricep machine is actually available for use over there
37-dudes that never wear work-out clothes but rather jeans, hoodie, boots no matter what the weather
38-dudes that have there friends video them doing a lift on there phone
39-steroid gut dudes that think they look great with these big ass stomachs
40-dudes who use the entire gym as a race-track and jog thru all the areas for my entire workout over and over and over ummmmm go outside or get on the treadmill there is no track here moron
41-dudes that do all these weird exercises example they use the flat bench to constantly jump up and down on while holding a 2 10lb weights, ummmm now i have to wait for you to do this weird exercise that this equipment was not meant for. "NOT"
42-dudes that do pullups and think they are gymnist and try and flip over the damn bar
43-elevator to the gym not working and its 5 flights up and down and its leg day
44-getting in the shower to find there is no soap
45-clocks on the wall always wrong time or no clock at all
46-people who fill up there gallon water bottles at the water fountain, ummmm this takes too damn long i have a "JOB" to get too

I am sure there are others but this is what i have encountered in my 20plus years working out at gyms and even working at few myself i am sure i can think of more stuff, but i will do it later i am sure most people can re-late to most of these things and yet we keep going hoping it gets better, true bodybuilders, and weightlifters we are.

To be absolutely fair, some gyms have these "auto flush" toilets that don't always work and it can't be manually activated.

But in most cases, yes, it is ethical egoism at its very worst.

With most self-flushers, you can hold your hand about six inches from the motion sensor for a few seconds, and when you move it away, the comode will flush.
I've done this a few times, myself, out of courteous necessity.

Reminds me of when I see (usually) young trainers performing what I can only assume is supposed to be a rotator cuff exercise; standing while holding a db at about the half-way point of a hammer curl position (arm bent 90 degrees). They move their arms in the right direction, but in that standing position, there's no resistance on their RC's.

If you want to do it standing, you've got to use a band or cable.

To eager to assist.  I also hate to be spotted on squats.  I will just Put it on the catch rails if I can't get up.  If you train with somebody and they wanna look like johnny attentive and help to much. Even if I'm struggling I might fucking get it.  Also sometimes on bench I willet it sit on my chest for a second and take a small rest if doin drops or rest pause or just wanna get one more maybe I just need a second.  Doesn't mean I need help lifting it, especially if it's light an I'm just burning out and wanna wait and vet two more.  Hat over eager spotters.  The worst exercise for that is squats.

Try explaining how you want your spot. Most people can give you at least closer to what you want if they know what you're after.

My first gym was mostly serious, old-shool lifters who really knew their shit. I learned a ton from those guys, including the ABC's of spotting. Some people would take a hand-off; others not. Some trainers wanted you to help them keep the weight moving the entire time, while others didn't want you to even touch the bar until/unless it started coming back down on them.
Side-spotting a heavy squat always made me nervous. Some of those guys got so pissed off when you'd incorrectly "help" them rack the bar. ;D

Anyway - to this day - anytime someone asks me for a spot, I ask them what they want. Many will just shoot you a confused look because either no one's ever asked them that, or (more likely) they themselves never gave thought to the idea that there are different ways.

Squatting a few inches with 5 or 6 plates on the bar...
You are preaching to the choir. I can't stand guys that deadlift off pins in the power rack so they can say they deadlift 200lbs more than what they can. This "sport" just attracts a lot of insecure young men. Quarter squats and leg pressing with the back board really high so they barely bend their legs with a 1000lbs. My grandma could do those shallow dips. Don't get me started on shallow shoulder presses or chest presses.

One guy on this board actually was trying to justify why he does all of the above when he lifts. The truth is that he is lying to himself about how strong he really is. If I short stroked everything I would magically be able to handle a hell of a lot more than what I use.

I use 85lbs dumbbells when I incline press. I never said I was an animal. I go as low as I can possibly go to full extention. A guy asked me if he could work in. He had 120lbs. and asked me to help get them up. He stopped a good 8 inches from his chest doing half reps. I never commit the sin of criticizing someone in the gym. So I told the kid let me try them. I thought if he could see his own performance by watching me imitate him he might see the light. I knocked out 6 half reps with the giant dumbbells. The next set I was back to my 85lbs. I never knew if anything registered in his head. When in doubt make an exercise harder not easier.

You are preaching to the choir. I can't stand guys that deadlift off pins in the power rack so they can say they deadlift 200lbs more than what they can.
You do realize that is a legitimate exercise right? Although I would never claim it as a deadlift #.

I have noticed a few more people staring lately....kinda irritating.
Still, not putting weights away or leaving a loaded bar is #1 pet peeve for me.

I hated Bursting for a crap..getting to the toilets without farting out loud and then in the toilet ...no fucking toilet roll... that annoyed me having to go to the counter to the little girly and trying not to shit my pants asking for Bog roll... ::)

another thing was watching really fat people spending so much time on the "Ab Roller" when they should be on a bike or on the treadmill..... ;D

Of course I do. Half reps have a place in training. It just shouldn't be the main course. I have been lifting for 40 years. I just can't believe the lack of a work ethic in gyms now but it's a reflection of  today's generation. Of course not everyone of today's generation but wow I can't believe some of the non efforts in the gyms today.

As I mentioned before, there's a right and a wrong way to do partials.

I'll use db bench press for example since oldtimer1 mentioned his story above. Stopping short the way that kid did has no benefit and actually is detrimental to any kind of development.

I lower the db's to a point actually a bit lower than a bar would allow. I then press, but stop about 4/5 (or a tad less) of the way up, far short of lockout, and even before triceps take over the bulk of the load. Done in this manner, the pecs never get a rest due to overbearing assistance from secondary muscles.

Of course, there's going to be some involvement of ancillary muscles, being a compound movement. The idea is to minimize involvement of these muscles as much as you can to maximize the effort of the pecs. And, again, I would only recommend this strategy if one's goal is strictly hypertrophy.

Functional strength is an entirely other matter.

I do partial reps sometimes at the end of a set when maybe a full rep is not possible... calf raises as an example. Larry scott used to call them "Burns"

Larry also often used a version of the db shoulder press (you can find footage on YouTube) in which he only pressed through about the middle 3/5 of the movement. He claimed that was intentional, and credits it with his great deltoid development.

I've tried his version several times, but am not fond of it. It didn't "feel" the way I thought it should. I may not have done it correctly, or it may just not be ideal for me, further evidence that not everyone responds the same to various exercises.

I routinely incorporate some of his (and Vince's) arm and chest ideas with favorable results.

yes Larry scott showed this exercise a lot in his seminars. Ido not do it myself but he also made spider curls popular along with his "scott bench curls". I think Partial reps has a place in our training but maybe it is abused too often in the Gym and not used for what it was intended. I like doing it on parallel bar dips along with static holds.. now that is another story...in my Dungeon of pain..

Nobody wants to lift no heavy ass shit these days. :( Kid I train with now is picking it up nicely though, but he's still a skinny twink....a work in progress if you will.

If he'll put down the godamn cell phone for a few minutes to do his sets. >:(

Chaos, I see a lot of young guys lifting heavy weights. They lift heavy for less than half squats, half leg presses, half shoulder presses, half deadlifts, half chest presses, half laterals, quarter calf raises, and then they walk on the treadmill being careful not to work to hard so they stay in the fat zone. These ego lifters aren't that strong but they actually think they are. My grandma could do little leg bends just like they do on the leg press with all those plates.

The other guys that kill me are the guys that work out without even trying. You can fine these guys chatting during their set. I saw a guy doing tricep pushdowns chatting through the whole set with his training partner. How could you be pushing yourself and have a conversation?

Half reps is definitely something that prompts me to teach them how to work out, but I don't because I know some people may not appreciate me being their coach.

The most annoying thing for me is when people put dumbbells away in the wrong order >:( how hard is it to put the 20's, 30's and 40's together? I hate walking around the dumbbell rack looking for the other 40 because some idiot doesn't know how to count!
