Poll: Ron Paul moves into top tier in South Carolina

Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has moved into the top tier in South Carolina. Mr. Paul surged four percentage points in the latest Rasmussen Reports poll of likely South Carolina Republican primary voters to tie former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum with 16 percent of the votes each.

The poll, released Friday, was conducted after Tuesday’s New Hampshire Primary. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney bested former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the South Carolina poll by a margin of 7 percentage points.

Exactly one week ago, Rasmussen Reports polled the Palmetto State. At that time, Mr. Paul had 12 percent of the votes and Mr. Santorum had 19 percent of the votes. A week later, Mr. Paul has trended up 4 percentage points and Mr. Santorum has trended down 3 percentage points.

The latest South Carolina poll is also good news for the Gingrich campaign and bad news for the Romney campaign. Mr. Romney is down 9 percentage points to 28 percent of the votes and Mr. Gingrich is up 3 percentage points to 21 percentage points.

If Ron Paul can continue this trend, he could move up to second place in SC.

New poll in S.C. indicates tight race for top spot - with Paul 20, Perry 9, Santorum 7

(CNN) - With eight days to go until the South Carolina primary, a new poll suggests a close contest in the first southern state to vote in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

According to an American Research Group survey released Friday morning, 29% of likely Palmetto State GOP primary voters say they're backing Mitt Romney, with 25% supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Romney's four-point margin over Gingrich is within the poll's sampling error.

The survey indicates Rep. Ron Paul of Texas at 20%, Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 9%, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at 7%, and former Utah Gov. and former U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman at 1%, with 7% undecided.

The poll was conducted Wednesday and Thursday, after Tuesday's New Hampshire primary. Romney, the former governor of neighboring Massachusetts, won nearly 40% of the vote in New Hampshire, with Paul, the longtime congressman who's making his third bid for the White House, finishing a strong second.

Paul has surged 11 points and Santorum has dropped 17 points since ARG's last survey in South Carolina, which was conducted after Iowa's January 3 caucuses and before New Hampshire's primary. Perry has jumped 7 points since the earlier survey, with Gingrich inching up two points and Romney losing two points. Romney edged out Santorum by eight votes to win Iowa's caucuses. Paul came in third place.

Gerald is definately a RP fan.    Imus too has come to be a RP fan.

if RP sticks with his bread and butter about the Fed and Inflation he will keep sailing.   He offers an answer why people are feeling squeezed beyond belief that no one else offers.

LOL and then what?  You'll support him?

considering how outraged you've acted toward paul, I'm shocked your post didn't just read: "he needs to drop out of the primary"

Gonna be a tight race.  I just don't understand these Tea Party people.  Ron Paul basically founded the damn movement then they take their vote elsewhere.  Was there something Ron did to sour their taste of him?
