What's your idea of cheap? and how important is access to the the tubes and city...etc is to you? you can get scruffy beds and breakfast in pubs...etc around London.

Cheapest possible way to get private room with bed and water, can be up to 10 km away from the city center ( or possible more). Good transportation would be good but I like to walk a lot so i can move by my own long distances. I want to explore and get real sense of London. I am not classic tourist who want to take photos of big ben i am more interested in city itself than monuments.

Think I will have to arm myself with some weapon with pakistans everywhere.

Cheapest possible would be a hostel, if you don't mind sharing....I see a lot of exchange english teeny students in the dozens dropping at nearby hostels  you might get lucky and be palced ina  dorm full of 19 year old Dutch euro girls...otherwise its polish and bangladeshi workers lol
