Lmao at how this thread shifted to celebrating ric the gay porn pioneer, one of the first muscle bears.

The golden era guys were living the life. Ciba dbol, cheap food, Venice beach and bottoming out schmoes.

I bet Arnold's video is in some 100 year old schmoes safe

Did not realise Pearson had done G4P

Here he is being interviewed by Dic Raiser a few years back... (makes me wonder how many of the guys listed above Dic also interviewed over the years - bet that angle was never covered when they talked about the good ole days...)

Good interview.  Ric left a legacy of good interviews.  Of course he talked too much himself.

They themselves probably can't believe some of the stuff they did in those days.  How much could they have made for doing that stuff?  A couple hundred bucks?  You'd have to be really desperate for money or actually homosexual/bisexual.

Bodybuilding has some dark secrets.  Attracts some weird folks.  Who hasn't seen weirdos in the gym?

Pearson supposedly just played with his wang on film unlike Drasin who went "all the way".

Ken Sprague is a odd character.  Very intelligent, extremely liberal to the point of being a communist, anything goes sexually, manipulative to the point of sociopathy.

I think they didn't foresee the consequences in those days.

It might have been seen as 200 bucks to get your dick sucked by some schmoe on video for half an hour, and the vhs would circulate amongst 100 schmoes.

But it turns out after 40-50 years some weirdo mastered your vhs and puts it online for 100s of millions to see.

Keep in mind the 1970s. The hippies and all that come starting around 1967 and then all hell broke loose in the 1970s. These guys were not hippie types in any way or shape, but they were a subculture and EVERYBODY was experimenting with EVERYTHING in a way you can only understand if you are old enough to have lived through it. It really doesn’t say anything too much about being gay or bi (maybe in some cases but mostly not). Then add the money factor in (and don’t forget the recreational drug factor which makes people do things they would never do normally) and it seals the deal. I am not sure whether Sprague made much money on this, but it was just one aspect of getting by.

From what I can remember reading in the original thread, the videos were mainly for wealthy private collectors and they were generally paid very well and in Spragues case he also made some very good business contacts.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s.  Nobody I know took it up the azz or did any of that. It would have been the worst thing you could do.  No straight man would ever do that stuff.  Were there gay people?  Sure, but it was in the closet.  It's likely most of these guys were gay. Sprague made a lot of money doing these films.  He even had a production studio to make the films.

Well, maybe you’re right that most were not affected by all the post-hippy wildness of the 1970s. But many were. And especially the subcultures which bodybuilding was much more at that time than now when everybody is on Instagram, or making coaching money over the Internet, etc. All I can say is that it seems that the bodybuilding scene was way crazier then than now and they did things they would not think to do now. And I don’t think that most gay people either then or now would think a Ken Sprague or Ric Drasin were “gay” in the typical sense of the word.

The late 60s/70s were much more sexually liberated than today.  No AIDS.  The Pill.  Free love.

But the gay was under the radar.  Being gay was not cool then.

Did you have porn?  Yes, but you had to go to a sleazy adult movie theater to see it or buy adult magazines.

For a straight man to do gay porn would be very odd.

Totally agree under the radar. Not discussed. But lots of weird stuff was going on (much more than now when everybody declares exactly who they are when they are barely fifteen years old and then that’s all there is to it). Also fueled by recreational drugs back then. Whether gay or not gay comes down to definition. I define it as straight guys involved in some weird shit along the way during a very crazy era (crazy for some, not for everybody or even for most people as you have pointed out). Your definition is more like, “if you touch the same sex, then it’s gay point blank end of story.” I can actually see the point of both definitions. But I guess I say cut a little slack here, times were weird.

Well, I don't mean that, just that it would be a very unusual thing to get involved in if you were straight.

If you were gay it would not be unusual, it would be normal for gay people, except for doing it for money in porn.  But if you were actually straight then it would be an odd thing to do.

As you say, all kinds of weird stuff goes on that we don't know about.

Pretty shocking, really. But yeah "Ric Drasin was a great friend of mine..." that I couldn't give 20 minutes to in the last 10 years. But hey check out Ladder protein. it's great!
