I am 55 so I understand what you are saying but some of your childhood activities have me puzzled.
Bushwalking? Is that stomping on a woman's hairy crotch?
Making cubby houses? Is that making a home for one of the Mouseketeers?
Acorn fights? Smacking each other with your nuts?
Please explain for us Americans. Thank you!

Although I am 32, my generation was much different than the kids today. I spent a significant amount of my time outside. Manhunt was my favorite game.

I really have no desire to know what went into this game. Especially how the winner was declared. Was this played in the sauna at LA Fitness?

You know what I got for Christmas? Oh, it was a banner fucking year at the old Bacon family. I got a carton of cigarettes. The old man grabbed me and said, "Hey, smoke up Roger." All right? So go home and cry to your Daddy. Don't cry here, okay?

I used to throw my hockey equipment bag on my back, sticks in hand and walk 2 miles to the rink then home after the game. My parents sucked  >:(

Great thread OP, I agree 100%. If I ever have kids they will grow up without video games, limited tv and Internet. Kids need to be outside building forts, riding bikes, playing kick ball, tag, and going to the playground.

Ahhh, so you played tag. But I guess Manhunt sounds more exciting when you are a kid. We used to play tag with BB guns. It was like old school paintball.

ROFL!!!  We use to shoot each other with one of those weak bb guns.

Had an air rifle too, but luckily we knew better than to fuck around with it.  ;D

No doubt! Some of those older pump guns would imbed a BB or pellet. I feel better knowing I wasn't the only crazy fuck to play tag with a BB gun.

Well, it was different because you were able to hide in peoples backyards, alleyways, roofs, etc.

Yes. The neighborhood I grew up in Queens, NYC, everyone knew each other for a 10-15 block radius. We used to knock on peoples doors and they used to let us in their house to go hide on the roof to hide lol. We used to hide in peoples backyard, etc. No one minded.  Man, I miss my childhood. Then when I was 14, I moved to another part of queens that sucked. I definitely yearn for the first 13 years of my life. It was awesome. Now I am old and cynical.  :-\ :-\ :'( :'(

Did you play stickball or is that a stereotype? Being from the Midwest we would imagine it being tough to grow up in Queens. We were wrong, sounds pretty cool.

Sounds like you had a good childhood like me. We did not have much but made the most out of what we did have. Having good friends as a child helps too. I bet you guys thought the kids from the Midwest were real pussies, lol.

What a load of rose tinted shit. Most of my childhood was spent hanging around a council estate bored shitless... with the monotony occasionally broken by a game of footie, smashing windows, setting light to stuff or getting battered by kids from other estates. It was wank.

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

This is your best post ever. The shorn scrotum line I used in my thread about my balls itching. Lmao

Blah blah blah...today children blah blah, it have been a stupid discussion for stupid adults all the history. Smart people realize time changes and that's the purpose. Nothing is static. Just realize and accept. This is life! If u struggle to much to make your children what u did in your childhood they will never be adapted to the modern society...

150 years ago you didn't actually grow up at all in 50% of cases. Death early.

100 years ago you had memories of your dad, big brothers and uncles being shot dead in a trench in France.

80 years ago you hid under the kitchen table as Germany bombed your house. Maybe your granny was blown to pieces.

Also, soccer ball soaked in gas and lit on fire and kicked around.  It was exciting when it got stuck underneath a car.

Another one was to take steel wool pads (no soap), tie a string on them, light the steel wool and swing it around as fast as possible.  Sparks would fly 20-30 feet in the air.   Very cheap 4th of July entertainment.

That did happen. We thought the car would instantly explode, like in the movies. After 30 secs, someone was brave enough to hook it out and the game resumed. I remember the flaming ball made a cool 'whooshing' sound when it screamed by your head. Kids.   ::)       ;D

Yes.  How about the tennis ball cannon?  We would cut out the top and bottoms of 4-5 cans... tape them together... put the ball in the bottom in a pool of lighter fluid, then lite it.  The ball would launch several 100 feet in the air.

Spending the day fishing, surfing, shooting slingshots / pellet guns, playing war in the Forrest, building forts, sneaking GPA's dirty magazines to show to the boys hahaha

Sure we had an Atari but we were only allowed 1hr of it before bed assuming chores and homework was done. Got a little more time if it was raining outside but even then it wasn't an all day thing.

Yes! Totally forgot about that one. My best bud's older brother always had one of those. And spud guns you made out of pvc piping, hairspray and a bbq igniter. Could put a potato through the planking of the fence at the end of the yard. Glorious destruction.

speaking of childhood memories.

Throwing out old shit I found some of my old "mix tapes" for my Walkman of whom gave me years of dedicated service in the gym btw. I showed it to my teenager and had to explain to her how when you like different songs from different artist you got blank tapes and recorded the songs separately or if it wasn't out yet you had to stay by the radio and record it but be careful to stop it in time so you didn't record the DJ or radio commercial afterwards.

Her response ...

"Why didn't you just create a playlist and download it to your iPod or cell phone?"

...I then started over and explained we didn't have those either. I then found out she doesn't know what a payphone is!

When I was a kid (late 70s - early 80s) it was pretty boring hanging in the house. Cable was limited, and household internet was a distant dream. We played sports and hung out in the neighborhood. You were always looking for something to avoid the boredom. I used to listen to music countdowns and hit the record button on the cassette player. You always hoped the dj would shut the hell up during the intro and not cut too much of the song at the end. It was all about being around people.

During the teen years arcades got big. I loved it in there, and would spend many hours at a time. The parties were great too. We used to pick a big public park like a local ski hill and have a couple of hundred teens drinking, getting stoned and having a good time. These parties were great because I knew at least a hundred people. I remember thinking how amazing the club life would be as I got older. Looking back now no club comes close to those parties.

These days kids have so many options. They don't need to leave the house to be entertained.

I grew up at the same time. Did the exact same thing with the cassette player.

Same for 90's kids. The classic Nickelodeon was the fucking BEST. Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Pete and Pete, All That, Clarissa Explains it All. I'm horrified at the garbage kids watch today.

Classic NES, Kick Ball, Bikes, Scooters..... Fucking eh man
