US Unemployment down to 8.8% according to Gallup
« on: December 03, 2010, 04:34:56 AM »
One key issue for Obama will be if he can get the unemployment rate down.

And do it fast.

This is of course pure speculation, but I think Obama would need to get Unemployment down to 5 percent and under to get credit as a "Problem fixer".

If it hovers around 6-7 percent, that ain't gonna cut it. That's no "recovery".

As empty as paradise

Hocus Pocus numbers with no basis in reality. Also, when did Obama ever admit that employment was at or above 10%? The arbitrary figure of 9.6% was used over and over again yet 9.6% (as recently as Novemeber) is not reflected below. Plus seasonal jobs are counted, people who have stopped looking for work are not counted etc.

And inflated stock market and the further creation of yet another bubble (another stock bubble....have they no creativity?) Can't make up for the fact that almost 10% of the population have no job and another 15% on top of that are working under full time hours.

No jobs, No recovery.

Can we all agree now that there is no recovery at all and that the far left experiment has been a miserable failure.

Another bad indicator was the fact that work force participation did not climb as well. So this UE of 9.8% was reached without the labor pool expanding.

That's real fucking bad.

Like I said - this was a hideous report, especially considering that many businesses hire to deal w seasonal demand.

i'm guesing... gallup asks people, and the official report is based upon unemployment claims?

Maybe if it's 1% different, it just means that 1 in 100 people is working under the table, or claiming UE benefits while working as a babysitter, bouncer, waiter, dishwasher, escort, whatever...

No.  I agreed about 2 months ago, that enough of its parts were unsuccessful to call it an overall, but not complete, failure.

Those "jobs jobs jobs" that Bobby jindal bragged about giving out in his state - it sure wasn't a complete failure to those folks.

But for an overall investment, it was pretty shitty.

You should note that I apply strict standards to goals that you may not. I don't know.  I am well aware that by INITIAL STATED GOALS BY THE BUSH ADMIN, the Iraq War was a glaring failure, actually.  But since we limped out 5 years after planned, with 1000-fold over budget, with 4000 dead soldiers extra that weren't in the success plan - well, we are all able to overlook that.

So i'll point out the hypocrisy in you calling the Iraq War a success, even tho it practically raped the initial goals Bush promised ;)

Do you disagree with my belief that since Gallup asks PEOPLE, and the govt uses paper claims - it's likely that AT LEAST 1 in 100 people is collecting UE benefits while still working?

Or is it easier to ignore my point? ;)

BTW, while I respect your knowledge on issues - I think if we ever debated in person for a bar of 20 people to judge, even though you're a lawyer, I would spin your ass into the floorboards.  Your ability to change topic to Obama or revert to 'attack the messenger' is about as frequent as your "she has nice legs" palin propping.

Of course.

For the record, as someone stated earlier on, this is the raw numbers, not adjusted for season.

And apparently the Christmas season sale is pretty wild.

But the curve shows that there were times when the unemployment were well above 10 percent. Something the Obama administration didn't admit to (from what I recall).

So I think it's worthwhile to look both at the adjusted and the raw figures.

Regardless, 8.8 percent is still high. Are you arguing about 8.8 or 9.6?

Until Obama can get the unemployment down to below at least 6, I think 5, he will be weak in the employment issues IMO.

As empty as paradise

agreed but its nice to know whether your looking at adjusted or raw figures  ;)

I think any improvement below 9% will help obama but this isnt about obama to be honest this is about the US citizens that are out of work or underemployed.

again this is the most important thing and obama has put it on the back burner for 2 years straight now

Am I wrong or right - that Gallup asks people if they're unemployed, and the Govt figures are based upon who files for unemployment?

If that's the case, it seems logical that gallup would ALWAYS be lower.

There's always gonna be people who file for unemployment but make $ on the side.  I think 1 in 100 sounds at least possible.  If you have 100 people in a room collecting unemployment, you can bet more than one of them is making some cash somehow.

i think it's the opposite of what you're saying.  if Gallup is asking people if they're unemployed, they should get a higher number than those actually on unemployment.
