Bush made an attempt, saluted with the proper hand, and was clearly carrying a large load.
It would have taken zero effort to move the coffe cup to the other hand and return the salute, thats just fucking lazy at best and disrespectful at worst.

At the same time the French had an attack as well. They turned the Legion loose in the hills around Beirut. They were not attacked again. The mission in Lebanon was not popular, ill conceived and without a well thought out ROE. I did a long paper on this for CGSC. The best possible outcome was that we leave. We left. Guys like Powell learned that if we're gonna do shit like this we respond with overwhelming force and we got both the invasion of Panama and Desert Storm as a result. The US military has never been as good, with a less restrictive ROE and clear mission as in Desert Storm. This is a direct result of both the Powell and Weinberger doctrines...born of lessons from Vietnam through Beirut.
