For some reason, this WrestleMania doesn't seem so WrestleMania-y. They've repeated the Hollywood theme from WM 21.

And speaking of repeats, it appears that, since 'Mania is now a weekend thing, the artist known as The Weeknd is on the payroll. For the FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR, WWE is using one of his tunes as its theme song for the big dance (WM 36 - Blinding Lights; WM 37 - Save Your Tears; WM 38 - Sacrifice, and now WM 39 - Less Than Zero).

At any rates, here are my picks...at least for night one (WrestleMania Saturday).

WrestleMania "Showcase" Tag Matches: Men's - Street Profits vs. Alpha Academy vs. Viking Raiders vs. Ricochet and Braun Strowman; Women's - Natalya Neidhart & Shotzi vs. Raquel Rodriguez & Liv Morgan vs. Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baysler vs. Sonya DeVille and Chelsea Greene - I don't know if "showcase" is a fancy euphemistic way to say these folks are on the pre-show/Free-For-All; but, this is participation trophy stuff personified. How the mighty have fallen. Rousey went from main-eventing WM 35 to THIS? Strowman was once Universal Champion, headlining against Goldberg and Roman Reigns. SIGH!!

Anyway, Viking Raiders for the men's one; Rodriguez and Morgan for the women's one.

Edit - The men's match is night one; the women's match is night two.

United States Championship: Austin Theory (c) vs. John Cena - Bringing Cena back just to lose is strange, though he did that for Roman Reigns at SummerSlam 2021. I know Theory is getting the push, but does he need to beat Cena for that. I'll say Cena wins by DQ

WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championships: The Usos (c) vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn - After the challengers got humiliated last year by Steve Austin and Johnny Knoxville, respectively, WWE has spent the last year building them back up. Someone from the Bloodline has to get beat....maybe. Slight upset special - Owens and Zayn win the belts.

Smackdown Women's Championship: Charlotte Flair (c) vs Rhea Ripley - Based on her induction into the Hall of Fame, I think Charlotte is taking some time off, maybe to have a kid. So, I think Ripley avenges her WM 36 loss and wins the blue belt.

Dominik Mysterio vs. Rey Mysterio - Same principle applies here (minus the baby part). Rey seems to be calling it a day; so, it's time-honored-tradition routine to put his son over.

Damage Control (Bayley, Io Sky, and Dakota Kai) vs. Trish Stratus and WWE women tag champions (Becky Lynch and Lita) -

DC has been on the decline; they could use the win but the nostalgia factor may too great for this one. If Lynch and Lita had another partner, I'd give DC the win. But, Trish Stratus is just too sweet. So, she and the tag champs are my picks.

Seth "Freakin' " Rollins vs. Logan Paul - Rollins has been getting beaten way too much. Using him to boost other people doesn't work, unless he gets a "W" on the grandest stage. Plus, this feud has been too one-sided. I'll go with the Visionary.

US title match kicks it off. Cena has copped the GI Joe logo for his gear and is sent off to battle by a bunch of Make-A-Wish kids.

Cena is smaller and paler but he keeps knocking Theory to the ground. WHAT!! Theory just went Mike Tyson on Cena and nearly bit his ear off!!! Then he pearl-habored Cena and pummeled him on the mat. A nice forward roll and neck-breaker for a near fall; next comes a forward roll and a dropkick for another near-fall.

Theory tried it one time too many, wildly missed the dropkick, and gets wrapped into the STF. The US Champ has turned cannibal as again he munches Cena to escape a hold.

He goes for two stomps, hits one, but gets caught after the second one. Cena tries the AA but gets planted with a DDT and almost pinned. After a clothesline in the corner, Theory hits a nice double-bicep. After the traditional exchange of boo/YAY punches between the two men, Theory applies the sleeper to Cena. The challenger escapes the sleeper, hits the shoulder blocks, and does the "You-Can't-See-Me" and five-knuckle shuffle routine.

Another AA attempt but Theory hangs on to the ropes and accidentally kicks the ref in the faces. Cena applies the STF again, making Theory tap but there's no official. Cena releases, thinking he has won. But, he checks on the ref and when he goes back to Theory, it's nut-shot time for the US Champ. A-Town-Down.....and Theory retains!!

Next is the Fatal-4-Way men's match. Much better than I thought. Ricochet gets nearly decapitated with a bouncing Doomsday device from the Viking Raiders. Strowman bowls them both over after they spend too much time posing with their manager, Valhalla. But, the big pop comes when Chad Gable attempt to hit a German Suplex on Strowman, who initially escapes but after a failed powerslam attempt on Gable, Gable rolls up Strowman then actually HITS THE SUPLEX on the Monster.

Now, it gets silly. Gable goes to top rope to hit Strowman, only to be shoved to the mat by Dawkins. Dawkins goes for a splash but misses after being tagged by Ivar. Ivar goes for a splash, only to have Valhalla call an audible to have Ivar try a top-rope moonsault. Ivar misses and now Strowman tries his luck on the top rope....AND ACTUALLY HITS THE SPLASH. But, all the other contestants break up the pinfall attempt.

Otis hits the World's Strongest Slam on Strowman, rips off his T-shirt, and starts jiggling. He goes for a Vader bomb, only to get kicked by Ford who goes to the top. But, he gets stopped by Gable. Next thing you know, Gable is going for a suplex and everyone else goes to the corner for a suplex powebomb splash thingy that wipes out everybody.

Strowman nails Dawkins and gives the signal for the Strowman express. He bowls over Eric, Ivar, Otis. After pausing from hitting Otis, Strowman goes for round 2. He nails Ivar, then Gable, he heads for Eric again but gets blasted by Dawkins. Dawkins gets hyped but Ricochet sails with a shooting star press to the outside, nailing Dawkins and Eric and nearly hitting the announce table.

He throws Dawkins in the rings and goes for a repeats. But, Dawkins gets his knees up and then HOLDS Ricochet in place for Ford to hit his "From-The-Heavens" splash, while Ricochet is still draped across Dawkins' knees. One roll up later, it's 1-2-3 and the Street Profit win it.

Paul and Rollins do battle. WWE actually is doing a ZIPLINE entrance for Paul, after what happened to Owen Hart? Rollins has a conductor directing the audience (along with some piped-in singers) to do their diddy as Rollins with a BIG RED AND PINK robe heads to the ring. If the Visionary gets any more flamboyant gear, we may have to start calling him SETH-DUST.

But, Paul is out wrestling his opponent with submission holds, moonsaults, Russian leg sweeps, and a repertoire of mat moves.

But, after one missed moonsault, it's fisticuffs and outside the ring for Paul. Rollins then stomps Paul's hand on the steel steps. Back into the ring for a pedigree attempt goes Rollins and Paul. But, Paul reverses it and hits a rollup cover. Then Rollins rolls him up. Back and forth go the cheap roll-up attempt, until Paul hits Rollins with the "lucky punch". But, that hand is hurting. And too much hesitation keeps Paul from the three count.

Then Paul tried to hit a stomp on Rollins who reverses it into a power bomb. But as Rollins goes for the stomp, a mascot in a Prime Energy drink outfit saves Paul and they set up Rollins on the Spanish announce table. Apparently, this fool is known as KSI and he's a buddy of Paul. As he films a selfie of Paul's immiment splash off the top turnbuckle onto Rollins, Rollins pulls him on the table and Paul splashes the goofball, instead.

Rollins immediately thrown Paul into the ring, hits a pedigree, but just misses a 3-count. Rollins goes for the stomp but gets scooped up in a Go-To-Sleep, CM Punk style. Then comes a big splash from Paul but Rollins escapes barely. Paul goes for a coast-to-coast dropkick but gets kicked right in the mush. Rollins finally hits his curb stomp and gets the pinfall

Six woman Tag match is up. I like the comic book entrance for Trish and the tag champs. Lots of Damage control, switching in and out of the ring and sneaking up on the opposition, Lita in particular, to get a bunch of near falls.

Now they're posing for the crowd, while stepping on Lita and nearly choking her out.

Lita escapes a double-team, drops both opposing foes on their heads, lunges to tag Stratus. She's a house of fire, complete with lick-the-palm chops and head scissors, including one outside the ring (with an assist from her partners) to toss Kai onto her buddies.

Stratus tags Lita and then gets on all fours to try "Poetry in Motion" (The Hardy Boys they ain't)!

Lynch gets a flying leg drop into the mix but gets a two count. Lots of scrapping ensures. But in the end a Bayley-to-Belly gets turned into a Man-handle slam from the second rope and the three count for Lynch wins it.

Next, it's father vs. son. Dominik is milking this prison stuff a bit too much, coming to the ring handcuffed, escorted by police, and wearing a lucha mask. But, Rey steals the entrance, in a low rider with Snoop Dogg (who appeared earlier with the Miz at the top of the show). First, it's Nothing but a G-Thang....then it's Latino Heat, finally Rey's entrance music hits and Rey gets a major ovation.

Rey get the upper hand, posting Dominik on the turnbuckle. Then, to the delight of the crowd, he removes a yellow leather belt and proceeds to whipping Dom's behind, literally.

Dom rolls to the outside, where his mother and sister are giving him the evil eye, ashamed of his actions. He takes his sister's drink and splashes it in her face. When Rey comes to the rescue, Dom get the cheap shot. Back in the ring, we get more mimics of Eddie Guerrero from Dom and soon his Judgment Day buddies show up. Just when they're about to get some cheap shots on Rey, Legado De Fatasma crew shows up, taking out Finn Balor and Damian Priest. Meanwhile, Dom actually hits Rey with a 619 and the splash and nearly scores a fall.

When that falls, Dom goes to use a chain from Priest to knock his papa loco. But, special guest Spanish announce team member, Bad Bunny, is having none of it and snatches the chain away. The distraction gives Rey the opening to down Dom, hit a 619 and a splash, and the new HOFer gets the win, celebrating with wife and daughter in tow.

Smackdown Women's Championship.......Lots of high flying bumps, mainly from Flair. But, there are a lot of spots where she seems to bonk her head and nearly knock herself unconscious. In the end, she tries to super-ilex Ripley from the second rope but gets launched into the outside post and knocked silly. This allows "Mami" to hit a super RIP-TiDE from the second rope and fold up the Queen for the three count and the win.

Ripley avenges her WM36 defeat and pyro starts a-blasting. A defeated Flair smiles, chuckles, and tells Ripley "you've earned it!".

Tag team title match. By far the longest of the night. Usos have a rapper named Lil Uzi play them to the ring. Zayn and Owens follow and the fight is on.

I think there should be a cap on super kicks, as both teams should have kicked each other teeth completely out given how many times the maneuver was used.

This also had tons of false finishes. Two pop-up powerbombs by Owens couldn't get it done. The "1-D" by the Usos didn't work. The Double Uso splash was ineffective. Zayn even tried an Uso splash that didn't work. Finally after all the beatings, both teams squared up in the middle of the ring. It came down to Zayn and Jey Uso. It took three Helluva kicks, after each Zayn looked remorseful. Owens kept Jimmy out of the ring with yet another "super kick".

After the final kick, we got the 1-2-3 and NEW Undisputed tag team champions.

And now for night two:

Undisputed WWE Universal/World Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes - This has been the most anti-climatic main event in WM history. NOT ONCE, have these two thrown hands against each other. It's been just stupid promos, occasionally face-to-face. The feel is that they're just going to give the belts to Rhodes, just to "finish the story". I hope not. His being injured for 8 months took away a lot of buildup. His Rumble win looks forced. As strange as this sounds, I'll make this my UPSET SPECIAL: Somebody we haven't seen in a while (i.e. Randy Orton, Goldust, or Bray Wyatt) pops up, screws Rhodes, and allows Reigns to retain. Given the Usos' loss last night, I'm a bit more hopeful the entire Bloodline doesn't get wiped out at 'Mania.

Intercontinental Championship (Triple Threat): Gunther (c) vs. Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre - The Clash at the Castle Match still registers today. But, I think putting McIntyre in the match may be more to give the Scottish Warrior his WrestleMania moment. He's never held a title since Thunderdome was ended. This could set up Gunther for a world title run, depending on the outcome. I'll lean for Gunther to retain.

Raw Women's Championship: Bianca Belair (c) vs. Asuka - Belair is money at 'Mania; whereas Asuka simply can't catch a break. Her undefeated streak ended at WM34; she lost the Raw title two years ago to Ripley there at WM37. But, I don't think they're ready to put the red belt on her at the big dance. Belair retains.

Women's Fatal-4-Way Tag Match See original post

Hell In A Cell: Edge vs "The Demon" Finn Balor - Is this the first time Balor has been a heel as the Demon? In any event, I hope he checks the turnbuckle this time. I'd like to pick Edge but they seem to be phasing him out at this point. Plus, the mystique of the Demon already took a hit with his loss to Reigns at Extreme Rules 2021. So, I'll go with painted Balor for the win.

Brock Lesnar vs. Omos - This will be UGLY, pure and simple. Omos has to beat Lesnar; or he's relegated to just a big ofe who beats up mid-carders. Losing to Lashley and Strowman last year means the Nigerian Giant needs a signature win under his massive belt. The Beast can give that to him. So, I'll pick Omos......barely.

Well, starting tonight off with this clunker makes a bit of sense. It's Omos vs. Lesnar.

A gut-wrench suplex on Lesnar and a quick bodyslam. Watching Lesnar get thrown around the ring this easily is rare.

Another slam and Lesnar is wincing in pain. Now, it's bearhug time. Omos keeps pounding the lower back of Lesnar and more bodyslams.

Another bearhug and lesnar is pleading to the fans for help, Hogan-style. Lesnar elbows his way free, bounces off the ropes and run right into a chokeslam and nearly gets pinned.

Omos throws Lesnar into the buckle, screams, charges, misses. And you know the rest......suplex, suplex, suplex, F-5 Attempt, back gives out; Omos tries choke-bomb; Lesnar escapes, F-5, pin!

Women's fatal 4-way.....not much to note. Rousey makes Shotzi tap out again. Rousey and Bayzler win.

Now, comes the IC title match. Now, let's see how red Gunther can make Sheamus' chest again. The fans are cheering for Gunther again. Gunther puts Sheamus in a Boston Crab. McIntyre kicks Gunther right in the mush; but the ring general won't release the hold. McIntyre slaps Gunther which just ticks him off. He lets Sheamus go and starts pounding on McIntyre. Chop-fest ensures between the two.

McIntyre gets the better of it and the fans dig it. Sheamus' chest is beet red AGAIN but so is that of Gunther and Mcintyre. Sheamus joins the fray and the three takes turns pounding each other. Then Sheamus ties Gunther to the ropes to hit Ten-Beats-of-the-Baldron. But, McIntyre, in between beats, adds a chop for good measure. McIntyre knocks Sheamus to the floor after Gunther collapses. Then he tosses Sheamus back into the ring. But Sheamus counters, ties up the Scottish Warrior, and hits the beats 28 times (at least).

The crowd loves it. Sheamus attempts a Celtic Cross (aka Razor's Edge) only for Gunther to intercept and kick Sheam-o in the mouth and hit a clothesline for a near-fall. McIntyre gets into the fray, throwing Sheamus into Gunther followed by a DDT. He goes for a Claymore but misses. Gunther dropkicks McIntyre into the corner then hits a power bomb for a near fall. Gunther inexplicably goes to the top where he's met by Sheamus, who hits "White Noise" and then the Celtic Cross. But, still there's no cigar.

Now, comes the Cloverleaf. But, McIntyre put the sleeper on Sheamus. Sheamus fights him off and then hits the Brogue kick on Gunther. But just before the 3-count, McIntyre pulls Sheamus off the cover. Now, after a headbutt to the floor, McIntyre does a somersault over the top onto the Celtic Warrior. Back into the ring, McIntyre goes for the Claymore but get Brogue-kicked instead. A flop cover by Sheamus still doesn't get three. After a headbutt and two knees exchanged, the Claymore gets delivered to Sheamus but no three count for McIntyre. The two exchange more blows and Sheamus hits another Brogue. But, as Sheamus goes for the pin, Gunther dives from the top to splash Sheamus. He powerbombs Sheamus onto McIntyre. Then he powerbombs McIntyre and get the 1-2-3 to retain his title.

Raw Women's Championship, Kabuki performers entrance for Asuka; Divas of Compton entrance for Belair.

Asuka keeps hitting kicks while Belair goes for slams and spine busters. Belair tried her handspring move only to get twisted into an Asuka-lock. Belair rolls out of the ring; Asuka applied the hold again, only to be power bombed on the floor. Belair gets Asuka back into the ring for a two count. But a spear attempt has the champion hitting the post and rolled up for a near fall.

It's more submission moves vs. power moves for the competitors. A suplex on Asuka from outside to inside the ring followed by a blockbuster move put the champ back on offense. Now, the champ goes to the top rope but gets caught...Uh-oh!! Asuka nearly gets the KOD but grabs that giant braid and hits a code-breaker onto Belair's face for a near-fall.

Belair went for the KOD; Asuka kicked her into the ref; Asuka went for the blue mist but MISSED. Another KOD attempt got countered into an Asuka Lock. Belair powered out into a KOD and get the win. Asuka continues to suck and lose at Mania.

Apparently, comic relief is watching Miz get beat up, first by Pat McAfee last night; then, by Snoop Dogg after a run-in by Shane McMahon earlier.

Keep in mind Miz is a two-time WWE champion.

HELL IN A CELL is NEXT!!

Edge does his Brood entrance but appears with a silver skull mask that looks silly. Balor does his Demon routine with purple smoke flares. After both of them no-sell punches, they both go under the ring for weapons. Edge gets a red chair and Demon gets a kendo stick. Edge nails Demon but no effect. So Demon gets medieval with the stick.

Edge makes the comeback and after knocking Demon into the cell, he pins him in the corner with two kendo sticks and dropkicks him while Demon is trapped. Edge sets up a table and frees Balor but he starts punching Edge and throws him into the stairs. Back in the ring, Edge hits a flapjack and a impaler DDT but it barely affects the Demon. Edge goes for a spear but get the sling blade form the Demon. And outside the ring, Demon chucks Edge into the table.

Demon throws chairs at Edge. But, Edge dodges the third chair and kicks Demon in the face. Back in the ring, Edge hits the kill-switch/Un-prettier. So, Edge has used Gangrel's move and now Christian's move, too. Now Edge gets a ladder and actually chucks it into Demon's head. And Demon is busted open!!

Demon gets patched up and he's scowling and ready to fight more. I thought the spirit of Hell in the Cell was that the cell was the evil structure. But, the damage each is inflicting on each other is due to everything but the cell itself. Balor went for the Coup-De-Grace and missed. Edge went to spear Demon but hit the ladder. After a roll-up, we have a double clothesline. But, Demon pops up and with another sling blade, hits the Coup-de-Grace but gets a two count.

Balor tries it again from the top of a ladder but Edge whacks him with a stick and drops him on his head from the top of the ladder.

Edge sets up a table for Balor but the Demon uses another stick to put Edge on a table. He goes for the Coup de Grace but from some metal platform off the cell. He misses and later gets SPEARED. But, there's still no three count. Now, Edge gets a red chair and pounds Demon into oblivion. Then after placing his head on one red chair, he whacks Demon with another. And finally, we get a pin for Edge.

Finally, the main event! Cody Rhodes has wings on his jacket, with his family and the late Luke Harper's son at ringside. Reigns has concert pianists playing him to the ring.

Cody starts out-wrestling Reigns early. But, after a pep talk from the Wiseman, Reigns goes back on offense. Ten clotheslines later, the champ misses an off-the-rope clothesline and gets hit with a dropkick. But a disaster kick attempt gets turned into a power bomb. But, Rhodes keeps on countering. After a suplex, Reigns throws Rhodes over the top but Rhodes skins the cat and throws Reigns out the ring.

Rhodes goes for a kick but gets tripped face-first onto the apron. Reigns heaves Rhodes onto the ramp and slams him on it. Reigns goes for seconds but Rhodes slips out and returns the favor. As Rhodes climbs back into the ring, Solo Sikoa sneaks a chair into his ribs, allowing Reigns to hit a drive-by dropkick. Reigns applies a chin lock but Rhodes escapes. He gets tripped by Sikoa and clotheslined by Reigns.

Reigns ripped Rhodes into the buckle and later cleans both announce tables. But his power bomb attempt results in the champ getting backdropped into main table, leaving Cole and Graves with nowhere to sit. A powerslam and Cody-cutter later, Rhodes gets a 2-count.

Reigns gets stomped outside the ring. Rhodes delivers a dive to the champion. But after heaving Reigns into th ring, he gets lashed by the weightlifting belt Rhodes gave to Harper's son. The ref didn't see it but he heard it and gave Sikoa the heave-ho.

Reigns tries to use the belt but the ref takes it from him. Rhodes get super kicked and nailed with "Cross-Rhodes" and nearly pinned. Another attempt get turned into a jaw breaker. A rock-bottom from Reigns scores a two-count. Reigns goes for Superman punch but Rhodes sidesteps and applies a pedigree....but no three count. Rhodes bounces for a disaster kick but a Superman punch nearly end his night.

Reigns gets his pep talk, does the Tribal Scream, but (as usual) misses the spear and ends up getting wrapped into the Figure Four. Reigns reverses it and Rhodes makes it to the ropes. Now, the challenger goes to the top, but he misses his move and after hitting the ropes and get SPEARED. But the champ doesn't get the fall. After pounding Rhodes, Reigns decides to put the challenger to sleep with the guillotine.

Rhodes somehow escaped and hammers Reigns but he aims for Reigns and nails the ref. One double clothesline later, Rhodes tries Cross-Rhodes again but here comes the Usos. But, just as it looked bleak, the new tag champs run off the Usos, with Owens nailing Reigns with a stunner and Zayn hitting the Helluva kick. Rhodes flops into a cover with the ref finally returning to the ring. But poor Rhodes gets a Hebner-count, allowing Reigns to escape.

Now comes the "boo/YAY" punches. Reigns goes for a Superman punch but Rhodes get the jabs and the Bionic Elbow. And finally, another Cross-Rhodes hit, followed by another. The crowd goes nuts. Rhodes goes to seal it with a third straight but as Heyman complains to the ref, Solo Sikoa jumps the rails in a black hoodie, drills Rhodes with a Samoan Spike which frees his cousin. Reigns bounces off the ropes twice, HITS THE SPEAR, and get a much-faster count from the ref, this time for THREE and the WIN!!

Well, Balor may be out for a while. So, there's that aspect to it. Plus, Judgment Day is mainly on Raw; but Rhea Ripley is Smackdown women's champ. Now, I'm hearing rumors that Charlotte is taking time off to pursue bodybuilding/fitness contests?

I speculated she was doing the THT, but I thought it was to have babies, not flex biceps or do flips.

As for Lesnar beating Rhodes half to death, I suspect that was done because there were no notable comebacks (I certainly don't count Matt Riddle, as I hardly missed him). I guess it's frustration over the fact that he can get another title shot at Reigns while the Beast can't.

YEAH ...demon with bray wyatt  could be good.

They were supposed to have a feud a few years back, with "The Demon" vs. "Sister Abigail. But, Wyatt got sick and AJ Styles had to pinch-hit.

When Wyatt became "The Fiend", he squashed Balor (regular) and nothing ever materialized after that.

"The Demon" vs "The Fiend".....sounds like something from an 80s horror movie.
