My initial question was not meant to be accusatory, and I’m not bashing the book before reading / trying it.
If it works, I’ll try it myself!

But before I invest time in reading the book and applying its ideas, I simply want to hear one or two concrete examples from people who’ve benefited and how.

Self Help Books...You are either going to read them for the sake of reading or you're going to attempt to apply some of the knowledge you find in them to your life because that is your intention upon reading it in the first place.  Instead of looking to others for examples of whether something works, decide first for yourself if you are looking to change your life.  Once you know that answer your mind will be more open to absorbing new ideas for how to live your life.

Here's some good ones to track down:

Get a Raise in 7 Days - Krannich
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Covey
How to Work a Room - Roane
How to Think Like a Millionaire - Fisher/Allen
Get What You Deserve - Levinson/Godin
Flawless - Tartaglia
The 48 Laws of Power - Greene
Taking Charge - Bagett

And my favorite...The Best of Success - Davis

Good luck to you  :)
