Title: Some Call for HBO Boycott in Wake of Bill Maher's Derisive Tweet About Tim Tebow
Post by: Dos Equis on December 27, 2011, 12:44:52 PM
I don't think anyone should boycott his show (assuming people actually watch it), but he is a stone cold idiot.  And he's not funny.  How does he keep getting work??

Some Call for HBO Boycott in Wake of Bill Maher's Derisive Tweet About Tim Tebow
Published December 27, 2011
FoxNews.com

HBO is catching some flak in the wake of comedian Bill Maher's crack about Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

Maher, who hosts the long-running HBO show "Real Time With Bill Maher," wrote a message on his Twitter account after the Broncos lost to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

"Wow, Jesus just f**ked #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere ... Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler "Hey, Buffalo’s killing them."

Tebow had thrown four interceptions in his team's Christmas Eve loss to the Bills, which prompted Maher's remark.

Tebow tweeted after the game: "Tough game today but what's most important is being able to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas everyone GB2."

(GB2 is a phrase Tebow has made popular that means "God Bless + Go Broncos," according to his official website.)

And while Tebow did not respond to Maher, some of his fans are calling for a boycott of HBO, urging customers who find Maher's tweet offensive to cancel their subscriptions to the pay cable channel, Yahoo! Sports reports.

Tebow has made it quite clear he believes in God, and some (including Tebow's own pastor) have said God is due some credit for the Broncos' surprise winning season with Tebow running the offense. Many were surprised when Tebow was given the starting quarterback job as he is an unorthodox quarterback with a below average arm, causing his team to run a college type offense.

The Broncos are 6-3 with Tebow as their quarterback. The prayer he says in the end zone after scoring a touchdown has been dubbed "Tebowing," helping to turn the Heisman trophy winner into a national sensation.

Maher is an avowed atheist. His "Real Time with Bill Maher," returns with new episodes on January 13, 2012.

what's so bad about that tweet

clearly God did not favor Tebow that day

maybe Tebow wore clothes of mixed fibers or ate some shellfish and Tebow seems to "work" alot on Sunday and we know how God hates that

Yep.  He has the right to call the 911 terrorists heroes.  To ridicule Palin's disabled baby.  And make any other asinine comment he wants.  He apparently has an audience.

I don't think he called them heros

I think he called them brave which is still fucking ridiculous as there is nothing brave about being mentally ill and wanting to kill yourself and others

Maher has always had a irrational hatred for Tim Tebow.  I doubt it because he's a proud Christian.  He must have some other reason.  ::)

never said he was fair and balanced and I don't he has ever promoted himself that way

I said I do not believe he HATES anyone due to their religious beliefs.

He might mock the crap out of them and ridicule them but that is not the same as hatred

for example of hatred look up your run of the mill baptist preacher and ask him what he thinks about muslims or gays and you'll see an example of hatred

if you need other examples of hatred just sroll around this board and check out any of 333's post where he talks about his seething rage and hatred for half of the people in this country.   Those would be example of hatred

what you're saying is NOT TRUE.  You probably have seen a clip or two from some liberal TV show of some baptist ministers being hateful and you've based your opinion on that.  it's funny how you don't bat an eye while portraying most (when you say "run of the mill" thats what you mean.  own it.  don't be a pussy) baptist ministers as hate mongers because people on tv like Bill Maher have made you believe that not only is it OK to do but that you're also correct in that line of thinking. LEMMING.

The fact is that both sides are guilty of being hateful at some time or another.  There are just some people who are intelligent enough to see hate for what it is and some who just don't nor ever will get it.  Do you honestly see no problem in your post?  Have you become that brainwashed?  It's not OK to say that most Baptist preachers are hate mongers.

Here is the part where you backpedal and say thats not what you meant.

You don't know many baptist preachers then.  I know many, and I have yet to meet a Baptist preacher whom I have ever heard say anything hateful toward Muslims or gays, or anybody for that matter.  You allow the media to brainwash you into believing that those few hateful preachers you see on TV represent "your run of the mill baptist preacher."

Yeah Straw there's a lot of people who say stupid things.

all i know is that YOU will never hear ME say that a "run of the mill" Muslim is a bad person.  Because that's plain old stupid.  I've never thought something like that was OK to say.

The difference I'm seeing is that stupid, hick, toothless republicans say that kind of shit.  People that no normal conservative republican respects or listens to.

However people like Bill Maher, whom many normal liberal democrats respect, spread the same kind of hatred and somehow this is looked upon as not only funny by his followers but also as true and correct.  Somewhere along the line our liberal media decided that it was OK to spread hatred as long as it is directed at the right groups of people.

Because I'm sorry if you believe that anyone could get up on a tv show and mock a devout Muslim athlete's faith in Allah, you're sorely mistaken.  And that's just plain old truth that liberals refuse to accept.

Maher does not 'hate' Christians... as a matter of fact, if you would actually follow him, he has a deep respect for those who act "Christ like" and not just call themselves "Christians".

Of course, if you don't follow any of his stuff, then you wouldn't know.

I watch his show just like I watch O'Reilly and the rest of the political pundits... They are all just entertainers afterall, and what I found is that they all, including him, make some kooky ass statements.

Bill Maher makes a lot of valid points as well, but of course, people who don't watch him speak are going to be the first group of people saying that they "know" what he's saying. ::)

The fact is that Maher makes no apologies that he is a reformed Catholic and since this is The United States of America, he doesn't have to.

He has NEVER called the terrorists "heroes" and has gone on record as agreeing with Afghanistan and not Iraq.

So if you are going to tell a lie (Mark) then at least admit that you just made some shit up.

But you won't, so feel free to avoid this thread like the plague now, because if you come back and don't admit that you made it up, then I'll call you a fucking piece of shit liar.

33333, you know he's not a communist and if you guys would watch his show, you would know that Maher wants Ron Paul to get the nomination.

Also, he bet a million dollars to 1 that the black man would NEVER get the republican nomination, and he was right.

Also, he bet a million dollars to 1 that the black man would NEVER get the republican nomination, and he was right.

sure sounds like he has a healthy respect for tebow ::)

they guy is a hack and you idiots give him a pass while condemning rush and coulter b/c you say "he is a comedian" ::)

well lets just say that rush and coulter were making jokes then now stfu!!!

you condemn all sides for whats wrong and this wasnt this is representative of his beliefs

Who has said that Ann and Rush didn't have the right to say what they want?

Certainly not me...

What does this mean? "you condemn all sides for whats wrong and this wasnt this is representative of his beliefs"

I seriously don't understand what you are saying here.

Did I say he was a comedian? I said he was an entertainer... As are ALL of them.

Why did you respond to my post which has almost no basis for your retort at all.

What I mean is if its wrong its wrong no matter who does it.

I never said anyone said they didnt have a right to say something....

What you did say is that he has a deep respect for christians who act christ like.

This comment didnt come from a place of respect and he didnt mean it as a joke like others want ppl to believe(maybe not yourself specifically)

I responded to your post b/c of your comment about respect, there is no respect in this mans comment at all but it was not all directed solely at you.

Then you don't seem to understand why I said what I said... He has gone on record as showing his respect for those who are "Christ like" and not just "Christian" in name only.

He has many many Christian friends and while they do not agree with his stance, they all seem to think he's a genuinely good guy.

Again, I think it's interesting that people are lying about what he has said... People like Mark over there who is as full of shit as a Christmas goose.

Thats fine and dandy, I dont see where he gets to decide who acts "christ like" and who isnt but thats neither here nor there.

Do you think this comment came from a place of respect?

if thats what some ppl consider respect then I would hate to see what they consider hatred.

I think that when you model your actions after Jesus, then you are acting christ like and not just being "a christian"... I don't see how difficult it is to do or see that.

Were these exact comments respectful... of course not... but Maher has always had an issue with people who point up at the sky when they do well, but don't point up at the sky when shit goes haywire.

His issue is that there is a lot of hypocrisy when it comes to what people say God is responsible for.

Did he "Tebow" when he threw an interception, or only when it was a TD?

I think you and mahr have a fundamental misunderstand of Christianity and b/c of that tebows actions.

First of humans are not Christ, it is in our nature to sin and it is through Christ that we obtain redemption.

Trying to hold a person to the standards of Christ is ridiculous b/c they will always fall short.

Second tebow never said that God plays a role in the outcome of games. He has given him the ability to play and its up to Tebow to use that ability.

He is giving grace to God and saying that this was possible b/c God made it so. God also made it possible for tebow to suck ass or for the other players to play better.

Tebow acknowledges this and has said that God doesnt favor him over other players on the field.

To think the way mahr does about that is just assinine and again shows a complete misunderstanding.

I don't think you are in any way capable of saying what I nor Bill Maher do or do not understand about Christianity.

I, myself spent my entire primary school years in a Christian school, taking Bible study every single day and learning what it supposedly means to be a 'Christian'.

So you will have to excuse me if I don't think your knowledge of what Christianity is trumps what my knowledge of it is.

I think every Christian is supposed model themselves  after Christ... will they fail? Certainly, but that doesn't take away from the fact they are supposed to try.

correct but you see the difference is when ppl like mahr and other arrogant atheistic morons make light of a person sinning. That is part of Christianity and doesnt mean that a person isnt a good Christian it simply means they made a mistake as we humans do.

What part of Tebows behaviour do you and mahr find offense and not "Christ Like"?

I do not know why Maher finds him offensive... I can not speak on that.

How is that even hatred?

He might not hate a Christian per say, but I think I've listened to enough of his remarks to believe that he hates Christianity.

I can't point exact interview dates and times, but some of the ones I've listened to he's argued that it's unacceptable for mature, intelligent, adults to believe in "fantasy", he argues that Christianity interferes with science, and that religion in general is the cause of most war and conflict.

I won't debate those points with you as it's more religious board shit, but, to me at least, that comes across as hating Christianity (or any other religion).

As examples of "good scientists who are sincerely religious", Dawkins names Arthur Peacocke, Russell Stannard, John Polkinghorne and Francis Collins.

So you did see Maher show no respect for Francis Collins.  Collins on the other hand was very respectful and nice to Maher.

Maher showed no respect for those truckers and did nothing but ridicule and aggravate them.  The preacher on the other hand was very nice to him.

The priest from the Vatican was being very critical of other Christians and of the Church.  Of course Maher liked this priest.

Everything you just typed can be true, and my point still stands. Going back and forth saying something is "nice" or "rude" or "hateful" or "kind", etc is pointless unless something specific is brought in and words are given precise definitions. I was trying to help along the argument by pointing out the problem that vague words pose for this thread. do you know what vagueness means? I was talking about the problem of vagueness in language (in this thread as it applies to arguments). Cute try though.

More incomprehensible dribble.

Please define:

"you"
"talking"
"problem"
"in"
"this"
"Cute"

and

"though"

Until then, you're just not making any sense.

What the hell are you willing to die for?

I can name 2 maybe 3 things on this EARTH... and 2 of them are my kids... so no... it takes a lot of strength and courage to die for something you believe in.

Sorry dude.

I don't agree, ME's don't even have the same values on life we do, and doesn't change the fact that it's your OPINION.

Ok Skip... Well in MY OPINION, it's not cowardly at all to die for what you believe in.

Do you think that people who fight in wars for what they believe in are also cowards?

Well, ok then... I'll tack on everyone that fought in pretty much every war ever, knowing they were most likely going to die a coward.

Nice to understand your stance on this.

Or is this one of those double standard things? It's only brave if the cause is also what YOU believe in?

Oh brother...somebody doesn't agree with Tu so he starts acting like a child.

Grow up.

Then we'll discuss.

I think the smarter you are - the less likely you are to pledge your allegience and purpose for being to a book written by mortal men.

The smarter you are, the more you realize we humans really don't know much about how we got here and where we go when we die.

Nothing wrong with saying "I don't know the answer..."

I will consider your response the equivalent of "but, but, but".

My points are quite valid, but I guess you don't like them.

Quite sad, I thought you were better than that.

I don't think you know what post modernism is. I hate post modernism. The art is crappy and the books suck. I was trying to help along the argument by pointing out the problem that vague words pose for this thread. post modernism is more than mere art and books is a way of thinking and your posts are saturated in it.

actually it's more liberalism, some egalitarianism, and logic.

Everything you just typed can be true, and my point still stands. Going back and forth saying something is "nice" or "rude" or "hateful" or "kind", etc is pointless unless something specific is brought in and words are given precise definitions. That's like 2 people arguing whether something is orange or red when it is in between being clearly red and being clearly orange.

Everything I typed IS true.  He clearly hates Christianity and he praised 911 terrorists.

Some words should be defined given the context their using, but I think you know what is being discussed here about that idiot Bill Maher.

Eh, that whole interpretation thing is a lot more subjective than objective.

Apparently you missed the part where Maher said to the truckers thank you for being "Christ Like" and not just calling yourselves "Christians".

You consider this "No Respect"?

Wow... We must interpret things differently.

Yes, he was expecting them to be jerks and to be disrespectful like he was to them, but instead they were kind to him.

Like I said, Maher has freedom of speech and can say whatever he wants.  He is entitled to his opinion about anybody.  But you say Maher has a "deep respect" for people who act "Christ like", yet look at what this thread is about, Maher attacking Tim Tebow and showing no respect for the man.

I don't know that much about Tim Tebow and I don't follow American football, but from what I have seen, heard and read, Tebow is a devout Christian, a genuinely nice guy who treats everybody with respect.  What has Tim Tebow done to Maher?  Does Tim Tebow not act "Christ like" enough for Maher?    ::)

Tebow hasn't done anything wrong......Well except for kind of sucking as a qb.......but i digress.  Maher's first inclination when he sees a high profile athlete's public display of pride as a CHRISTIAN is to attack him and try to mock and discredit the man.  Were the things he said that bad?  No.  But he deserves some flack over it for the sheer fact that everyone knows that he despises Christianity and that he's not doing this for the sake of comedy.  He is a comedian with a "political agenda".  And he's not funny.  Comedy for the sake of mocking those you hate ceases to be comedy.

Great points.  Absolutely no reason for him to ridicule someone like Tebow.  There are plenty of self-aggrandizing athletes he can pick on.

Maybe if Tebow praised 911 terrorists like Maher did, Maher would become a fan.   ::)
