U.S. must be open to second economic stimulus: Hoyer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said on Tuesday that leaders need to be open to the possibility of a second stimulus package to further boost the ailing economy.

It was too soon to tell whether the $787 billion package approved in February had been successful, Hoyer told reporters, but "I think we need to be open to whether we need additional action."

I voted for obama...I never trusted repubs. Mostly because of how they mix "their morals" in legislation...ie gay marriage and abortions

Obama's biggest problem is the congress.  There is no balance whatsoever.

Do you really think Dem senators are going to go for that?Guys like Evan Bayh or others in the midwest or south? No way they are going to destroy their careers for Obama.Already they are off board on cap and trade and many arent on board for health care.

That is totally insane.
They need to force more money from the 1st stimulus into the economy before even thinking of a second.

Mal, I hear what your saying about some repubs but we can't vote for big spending, big gov, freedom limiting democrats!
If the republicans were smart, they'd nominate people primarily on economic and limited government platforms in 2012.
We have to get the far left libs out of congress, they are killing us.

For our climate..i think we need those 80's republicans...the ones who were all money..all this "gay marriage" "abortion" republicans distracted from the real problems. Those Cigar smoking suit wearing republicans were awesome...But Obama is representing us very well overseas...but here...he needs to stop feeding the beast (i didnt sleep through econ..)

Hard to do when you have 'special-needs' states like Minnesota voting in people like Al Franken. They voted a guy in to the senate that makes his career from being a radical-left liberal. What do you think he's gonna do in there?

Mal, many of us are crying out for economically conservative social moderates (or libertarians).   That part of the republican party needs to be front and center now!  Thats the part of the party I like.  The religious zealots need to take a backseat.

You and I need to have a little chat my friend. I think you and a lot of other independents are making this whole "morals" and "social issues" thing with the Republicans to be something more than it really is. Im a social moderate. I will admit I am more conservative on social issues than I was in the past, but Im still a moderate. And I am way more of a fiscal and foreign policy hawk. So I care way more about those than I do social issues. I could not stand Mike Huckabee and I was furious at his followers for not seeming to care about the fact that he was a know nothing populist when it came to fiscal matters and that he would have been trounced in the general election. But the Republican Party would not exist without social conservatives. Just accept it.

Also, the Republicans are more willing than Democrats to keep these social debates within the state legislatures where they belong. There is nothing radical about wanting Roe V. Wade overturned. It is the worst decision in Supreme Court history, and you dont need to be pro life to see that.  Abortion would not be categorically illegal in the United States if it was overturned. There is nothing radical about not wanting to change the definiton of marriage. It is the changing of the definition of marriage that departs from the system of religous and secular societies for hundreds of thousands of years.

Here is the problem. In order to pay for the stimulus, he is going to have to do one of 3 things.

1. He will have to raise taxes on either me or people whome my job and income depend on. My job and your job and our income depends on thier spending and investing. When thier taxes are raised, they cant do as much spending and investing.

2. He will  have to borrow the money, which will cause the demand for loans to rise, which will cause interest rates around the economy to rise, which makes it harder for private businesses to borrow which therefore makes it harder to create jobs.

3. He will have to print the money, which will cause the money supply to go too high and will cause the value of your dollar to go down. Which basically means that your  real wealth is stolen from you. Its like a hidden tax.

Im a bellman at a large hotel. Obama has directly affected me because he has made businesses and corporations feel guilty about holding conferences and parties at hotels around the country. So now theyre not doing it as much. My hotel is a major convention hotel. That means less income for me. What's truly sad is that somehow I get the feeling that some of our sales managers who are responsible for bringing in these businesses to our hotel probably voted for Obama.
