You could be right.
My wife is 70 years old, she has never used steroids and she suffers from kidney disease. Currently her kidneys are functioning at 17-21%. Less then 15% and dialysis is likely.

A true freak, probably the best genetics ever for Bbing (even Flex doesn't seem to me as being that gifted). Better than Arnold to me.
-
My all time favorite bodybuilder hands down.
71 isn't too old to die... My dad died 3 months ago at the same age.
-
He competed for so many years. At his absolute peak I would put him up against anyone from any era. He wrote in an interview that at his best shape he was 253. That size with his tiny waist made him the Myth. He also always had a real job when he was competing. He worked long hours doing manual labor winning his Olympia titles then he became a cop. Don't forget as a teenager and early twenties he was a world class Olympic lifter. He was a real athlete. Damn guy was even shot at two different times in his life. Once through the arm in Cuba and once by his wife at point blank range in the stomach. You could make a movie about him with all the stuff he has been through.
May his family find peace. May Sergio find his reward.
-
Sucks
I wonder if he was getting the proper healthcare, as he was struggling financially
RIP
No, I'm sure the IFBB health care plan that Chick got for all the athletes kicked in and covered his expenses 100%

R.I.P The Myth .... could have been 10XMr.O had he been a "Weider" boy.

R.I.P. Sergio. You will forever be "The Myth"

Adieu man with big muscles. A nasty surprise for many or most of us for sure.
-
Life expectancy for men is 76 in both the USA and Cuba, and 65 years on average for anywhere in the world which includes shitholes like Swaziland (32 years wtf :o).
Those numbers include infant mortality too, so the average lifespan of people who live past infancy is longer.
Basically what I'm saying is he died "young" for this day and age.
-
pose in peace. A great champion.

I think the average life expectancy on dialysis is only about five years. I know after five years the survival rate drops quite a bit.

Crazy waist, no current pro can match this.
-
Very sad to hear the news, RIP.
He was one of the greats, and had a one in a billion structure and genetics.
Three time Mr. O, and would have continued to win had he beaten Arnold in the politicking department.
Guys try to give Arthur Jones some credit for when Sergio spent some time in Deland, Florida around 1973, training on the Nautilus system. Sergio was already one of the greatest before Jones ever built his machines. (Sort of silly).
Probably looked better/cooler in clothes than any other bodybuilder. I wished I'd gotten the chance to see him in person.
-
Not for long and def. not forever, sadly.
Dialysis is a treatment for end stage kidney failure. It does not replace kidney function as such. Eventually, one must have a kidney transplant if their kidneys fail if they expect to extend their lives.
Generally speaking the mortality rate for dialysis is about 15% for Peritoneal Dialysis patients, at 4 years, and about 25% for Hemodialysis our to 4 years.
What that means is that after 4 year, 85% of Peritoneal Dialysis patients are still alive, and 75% of hemodialysis patients are still alive.
Since the patient is going 3 times a week, this suggest that he is doing hemodialysis. Peritoneal dialysis is generally done daily.
Other figures I have heard say that about 50% of patients are still alive after 7 years.
All of this, though, also depends on the patients original state and other diseases, like diabetes. Being "bad diabetic" is not a good sign. Diabetes does HUGE amounts of damage to the kidneys, and is probably the reason they shut down. it is doubtful that they will start back up....
Dialysis is NOT perfect. It is MUCH better to have functioning kidneys! It is possible that the doctor might recommend increasing the treatments to 4-5 times a week.
The only other possible treatment is a kidney transplant, but being a "bad diabetic" would only ruin the new kidneys, and it is doubtful that the doctor would recommend this.

We were right in our which-mr-O-will-die-first thread last year.....RIP Sergio :(

This is one of the most cold-blooded posts I have ever seen here and that is saying much
This bastard 'vascsurgeon'- hopefully not a real surgeon but somehow connected to the medical industry racket in the US , is actually lamenting that he is going to loose the opportunity rip off dying people because of 'obamacare'
well if there was ever an endorsement for obamacare this is it, whatever obamacare is/might be. People like this are the scum of the earth. They are happy to let people without $$ die so as to make totally unjustified $$s, and then have the gull to complain if there is even a slight risk this is going to be taken way from them
Compared to this shit all PED dealers are saintly folk

hard to say. Although sergio destroyed arnold in terms of structure (he was a like a precurser to modern day Coleman with a super wide back, tiny waist, great quad flare) he couldn't get nearly as cut as Arnold and I think that hurt him.

Even though Sergio was very impressive to me Arnold still takes it. Standing next to Sergio his height just killed him. And Arnold's biceps and chest blows past him.
I will say this arms over head picture of Sergio is probably the best bodybuilding photo ever. Impressive as hell. Even beats Arnold's best praying mantis shot.

His relationship with J.Weider was what hurt him.... Just imagine, you being 3 times mr.O and then Joe brings Arnold who loses to Zane in Miami then to Oliva at the O but keeps being on the covers of all Weider publication the star,Austrian Oakblah, blah, having the best angles in every picture while Sergio ..... already a champ 3 times!!! never was featured on a cover of Weider only the lousy pics of him on back of a mag or small article WTF !!! or only the negative stuff about Sergio.......even in 1995 (the Mr.O reunion) Weider called Sergio fat and disrespected him only thanking Arnold for being there.......
My respect to Sergio and Serge 2 bodybuilders that didnt kiss Joe Weider's ass

Arnold was not permanently living in london.he was there for Mr universe contest.i think there was a gym close to green street he was training there.he stayed with gym owner i forget his name until weider picked him.
apart from that u will be totally ignorant if you ignore the fact that sergio never get a single peny or even decent coverage in weider magzine being 3 time Mr olympia.
weider aparently think black was not marketable that is why he picked Arnold white boy instead of Mr olympia sergio.
-
What is a even bigger tradegy is that cheath will probably get three sandows now and tie him.

OK but Arnold took Arnold away from Autria as soon as he could. He then lived in Germany. Then moved to England for a year under Wag Bennet. Then used Weider as a little pawn in his plan to get to where he wanted to be. Dave Draper was a more likely candidate for promoting Weider products but Arnold's force of nature made him number 1 in Joe's eyes. In late 1960's racist america there was no way Sergio was going to be promoted ahead of a white Arnold with his dominant drive and personality.
I think Sergio made a lot of bad decisions by turning on Weider then turning on Lurie. Ending up in a self made limbo.
Arnold knew how to use Weider for his own self interest and success.

Arnold also learned from his mistakes. after he lost he realized he needed to be sharper and more refined to be the best. And he did exactly that...he always came in what was considered "ripped" for the time after that.
Sergio..( no disrespect for the dead... RIP) was Ronnie Coleman's body with Flex Wheeler's brain.

holy fudge! look at those forearm muscle bellies! freak! :o
-
The greatest of the greats is gone! The King is dead, long live the king!!!!!!!
-
Sergio was probably my favorite bodybuilder. One of the best in the world. And like others said didn't kiss Weider's jew ass like Arnold. Didn't sleep in old men's beds to move up in the sport. But if you don't think his decades of steroid use didn't affect his health you're an idiot. Arnold will be in Sergio's place when he turns 70. The only difference is because of his wealth and prestige Arnold will have access to the best healthcare in the world. But Arnold already looks very old and unhealthy. 71 in 21ste century America isn't that old. My father in law is 71 and he looks great for his age. Very healthy, and still does physical labor day in and day out.
-
holy fudge! look at those forearm muscle bellies! freak! :o
I'm not a big fan of huge, overdeveloped forearms..makes people look like popeye and ruins the lines of the upper arm.

Not many people know that Sergio personally saved the world during The Cuban Missile Crisis: he beat up both JFK, Chroetsjow and Fidel..

What a sensational bodybuilder!
One of the all time greats. IMHO
May God rest his soul.

My wife just completed a painting of Sergio.
He was a great man !

Sergio did in the NABBA and still lost
Yes but that competition - arguably more than any other in its history - had the odds stacked against anyone competing against Bill Pearl. It was Bill's last competition and he came out of retirement to compete. Bill was the NABBA golden boy. It may have been hard to neglect Bill's standing within NABBA when judging that particular contest.
Having said that, it does look like a somewhat close contest.

i can not take anything away from Arnold even if i want to the man is a legend but things made lot more easier for him when he really need them.dave draper as a show boy haa u got to be kidding that big blond mess would place last in every pro show no matter what you do to him.
its easy for you to say sergio made wrong decisions.when you are 3 time Mr Olympia and constantly being ignored and humiliated just because you are black.what u expect from him.

YES, he would have had full coverage under his pension... I think he might have had "other" expenses, like alimony (ex-wife) and possibly bad investments (others have said this, I'm not sure).

You fat disgusting porch monkey lover....

That one of him was from the 1971 MR O where he was "allowed" bye the IFBB to "Guess pose" but not actually Compete against Arnold, this MM below is 1 year Later in Japan where IMO he was Possibly in his Greatest ever Shape Conditioning wise Feathered Delts and all...now imagine this Physique in this sort of shape on the Gear these days.........
-
He competed for so many years.
Your post sums up many of my same feelings about this legend.
The first bodybuilders I ever saw was Sergio vs Arnold in the 1970 Mr World on ABC's Wide World of Sports.
Arnold got a close win that day, but I was more impressed with Sergio.
Nobody, and I ,ean NPBODY could do the overhead victory pose like Sergio.
Sergio last won the O in 1969, but nobody could beat him in that pose in any era.
Sergio had that rare "awe factor" when he posed. Your jaw dropped and you said wtf!
I saw him live only once, when I went to see a WBBG contest in New York many years ago.
He wasn't the most ripped guy, but his incredible V taper, thick arms and sweeping thighs, were incredible.
I knew then , what I know now. Drugs alone will never make a Sergio, you have to be born with the talent.
Rest in Peace mighty Myth.
-
RIP to the Myth! He had a real job as a cop and still was the best bodybuilder of any era!

I read somewhere years ago that Weider had said "I put Oliva on the cover, I sell x. I put Arnold on the cover I sell 3x."

Just another "keyboard tuff guy" Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth closed and let people wonder if you are a moron, then to open it and remove all doubt that you are.
I am not surprised at your inabilty to understand the context of my post or even the words used, you can not even use correct punctuation and spelling in your post.
I could expalin what dialysis and dialysis access is all about to you, but, you wouldn't understand any of it, sadly.

We just returned from Sergio's wake in Chicago, and the photos there of Sergio's home life with his children moved me immensely. I spoke with Sergio's daughter and she talked of her father with tenderness, 'my best friend, I loved him so much', she said, and that choked me up....no talk of his Myth greatness, just a daughter mourning her dad. The funeral is tomorrow which I plan to attend with Bill Seno.

July 4, 1941
71 yrs old
Born in cuba
Sad news. :( 71 is a pretty good run, but in today's day and age he should have been blessed with at least ten more years.
Its mostly out of my hands, but I'd like to believe I can make it to the centenarian stage with most of my mental faculties, and able to bathe and feed myself. :-\ That's what I strive for, and I've at least got genetics in my favor. Although quality of years always trumps the quantity of years for a life well lived.
Sergio was one the "great ones", whose physique and awe-inspiring photography, for which he was the subject, will live on forever.

Looked shorter to me. Probably the insanely round and thick musclebellies compacted his look a little without diminishing the aesthetics.

Small funeral and wake, no 'celebrities, just family and friends. Possibly Arnold at this memorial in January?"

that's impossible for him to get that big at 5'10. max is 210 lbs without gh. period.
-
Sergio was one of a kind. In 1966 I took the bus to the Duncan Y.M.C.A. in Chicago in hopes of seeing him train. He would come in laughing and joking, do a few light sets and take a nap on the incline board. This happened three day's straight and I finally gave up. What a genetic freak, 20 inch arms and his waist was tiny, probably smaller than his thighs.
Mr. America, Bob Gaijda was also there and looked small compared to Sergio.

5'10 people can get over 210 easily with just juice, and no gh. Gyms are filled with them. I am sorry if you can;t Keep hanging around here and u will be 240 at 5%.

not at 8% they can't.

You must be young or new to this cult. Steroids work, with lots of food and training. 5'10 210 pounds at 8%, I have seen many. Sorry is not all gh.

2 and a half years of steroids is not much

it doesn't take six months to max if you know what you're doing diet and exercise wise.
