He should start deadlifting. Avoiding lower back work doesn't ever seem to improve a bad back. He needs to strengthen the lower back if he has back problems. Reverse hypers, deadlifts, good mornings, etc.
Leg press is almost as bad as squats for the back.

Maybe you are right !I never had any back pain while deadlifting but I can't do squat anymorejust unracking the bar, something pinches a nerve in my lower back and it hurts like hell.Even with 135 lbs
