Bodybuilding is not really an illusion at the Pro level. They are as big as they look. except little narrow philly. Narrow!

I think it's perception, people just expect them to look bigger than they do.   But also, our perceptions are all warped anyway from looking at this stuff.

Sean Ray, Bev Francis, etc all look pretty normal up close.  Yates, on the other hand, looks like a mutant.
