I disagree, I always thought he looked amazing (very rugged, dense muscle, thick as hell chest,etc), but I also think Arnold is simply the best bodybuilder ever, no one beats Arnold

I always felt like Franco's arms were lagging compared to Arnold's, although he was as massive as Arnold everywhere else. To my surprise, I once did these comparisons of Franco and many other bodybuilders (Arnold, Dorian, Ronnie, etc) and Franco's arms are pretty much as big as all these other bodybuilders, he is just very short, but once you put them pics together making them the same height, you'd be surprised, his arms even match proportionally to other massive bodybuilders. Franco was 5'5'' while Arnold was 6'2'', but you put for example, Arnold and Franco assuming they were both the same height, and Franco's arms match the size of Arnold's, it's shocking

pound for pound he is the strongest bodybuilder ever, at only 180-185 lbs he deadlifted almost 800 lbs which is unreal. I think the most he benched was 525 lbs and his squat was 600 and something, I can't remember exactly, all these lifts done at 180-185 lbs

Danny much better imo. Franco was strong as hell, and did a good job maximizing his bodybuilding potential, but his structure/balance is full of flaws.

They may be exaggerated but not by much. In the opening scenes of Pimping Irony he can be seen benching over 400 for 2-3 reps and not sure if he had already hit a few reps before that scene .He also was shown repping 315 with great ease for 8 reps. His back was near the level of a Dorian Yates back then, looked very powerful and thick, way more than Arnolds ever did. That came from heavy deadlifts and his pullup routine of course.

Not sure what your getting at here. He is not a common household name per say. I don't know that he is rolling in a shitload of money either. Pretty sure he is well off though. Yes Arnold brought him over to America made some deal with Joe Weider. Yet Franco was no slouch. He was driven in life for something other than the norm in his neck of the woods so to speak. He was already well into sports like boxing. Not sure that would have gone far though. He studied and became a chiropractor, had his own business. I think if he really rode Arnold's coat tails as you suggest he would not have accomished anything other than just being his friend. Yet that is not the case I think.

there's a video in youtube of Franco benching 405 lbs for an easy 10 reps. I don't doubt for a second that he could bench 525 lbs, back in those days

That's the video that I saw, if you can see the video, you can see how he was doing the 6th rep and the spotters threw him off. Noticed how he was using perfect form and not even going all out. Then the 2 idiotic spotters threw him off completely. I firmly believe that if Franco was wearing a belt and he had a good spotter spotting him the right way (only 1 spotter, behind the bar) he could get 10 reps or at least 8 reps, of course this would be a maximum effort on his part, not laying on the bench and pressing like he is bored or something, but going all out. I also heard he deadlifted 790 lbs in the gym, not in competition but in the gym, so for him to squat over 600 lbs is not shocking at all, but he should've squatted more (I firmly believe the squat and deadlift should be equal, a huge difference shows imbalance. Some have a very strong squat and a lagging deadlift, or vice versa. Strong squat means strong quads, strong deadlift means strong hamstrings)

I witnessed Kal Szklak do 405 for 5 with a wide grip at the original Gold's. He weighed a lot more than Columbu. Nonetheless, it was impressive.

in all fairness, I was taking a ton of ephedrine and I was on 1-AD, which was a powerful pro-hormone back in those days. Now I'm 100% natty and nowhere near that strong. I also stay away from ephedrine, my only energy drink before a work out is coffee

his bicep looks big to me..if you can row T -bar with that weight you are strong. I know dudes who never curl but have huge arms from pressing & pulling stuff.

Yeah they may have looked ''small'' compared to Arnold's 22'' arms, but if you compare pics of Arnold and Franco, while adjusting the pics to make them look like if they were the same height, you'd be surprised, Franco's arms are just as big as Arnold's, proportionally. Regarding to Serge Nubret (Ironage site) , Franco was dressed as school girl in 1975 post Olympia party :P
I believe that was at Ben Weider's request after Danny Padilla refused to wear it. Danny was excluded from the contest for enraging Ben. Serge said that Franco wore the uniform for sexual activity with Ben but Ben didn't enjoy it because of Franco's hairy rough face beard. Apparently he was looking forward to Danny's smooth face. Funny how Serge mysteriously died just as he was about to publish a tell all book. Jimmy T originally raised the story but it was funny seeing Serge confirm it.

Look at the lats firing back there in the chins. That's why he was able to develop such amazingly thick lats.
All the guys would do chin-ups back then. I remember Arnold telling a story of when he went to Chicago to train with Sergio. He said Sergio would warm-up with 10 sets of chins ups behind the neck before he started his workout.

I always felt like Franco's arms were lagging compared to Arnold's, although he was as massive as Arnold everywhere else. To my surprise, I once did these comparisons of Franco and many other bodybuilders (Arnold, Dorian, Ronnie, etc) and Franco's arms are pretty much as big as all these other bodybuilders, he is just very short, but once you put them pics together making them the same height, you'd be surprised, his arms even match proportionally to other massive bodybuilders. Franco was 5'5'' while Arnold was 6'2'', but you put for example, Arnold and Franco assuming they were both the same height, and Franco's arms match the size of Arnold's, it's shocking
Franco was nowhere near 5'5".

I think that even today they lie about their height. When I met him ('75), I think Franco was around his claimed height of 5' 5". Now, probably not as with the passing of years, we all shrink. And Franco seemed a good guy that day long ago. He was polite and had a good sense of humor as did Ken Waller.

No, there isn't. Wayne Gallasch has some black and white grainy footage of the 1974 Olympia but there's none of the '73 Olympia. It's ironic because Charles Gaines and George Butler attended that contest to cover it for their book Pumping Iron. Too bad they didn't think to hire a film crew to take some video footage of the contest as well.

Yeah, '73 was arguably better shape as far as detail than '74 but I think Arnold added more size in '74 with comparative detail. There is gym footage plus an interview with Arnold & Franco to promote the 1974 Mr. International but that hasn't been released.

ass to grass is unnecessary and very difficult, it required tremendous flexibility that most bodybuilders don't have (not everyone is as flexible as Platz)

very true but we are talking about the squat. There are a few guys out there that should have been Mr O but never got it.
Arnold does mention in his Encyclopedia that his form in the squat is not good which he attributes to his height and proportions. He says that is way is he is also using someone else in the photos to show better form. He mentions that he does lean forwards.

yes & he also mentioned he did front squats because of this. They never had all the fancy machines like today but i believe in some ways it was a blessing. They had to squat & do other basics.

Natural_O, do you have any info on how Franco was able to rehabilitate his leg and knee after surgery from dislocating it in the World's Strongest Nan competition? I remember you have briefly mentioned something about this in a past post.
I remember reading in the magazines that Franco would walk up stairs sideways and backwards over and over again to make the knee stronger. His doctor told him he would be lucky to ever walk again, let alone compete in a bodybuilding contest. His 1981 Mr. Olympia victory is very controversial but the fact that Franco was able to come back and get onstage again in such great shape is really amazing. I also remember that Franco said he re-injured his knee again when he was filming "Conan the Barbarian" in January of 1981 when he jumped off a rock.

After he was in the hospital it just hasn't been the same. He also has tried selling out more than once. In one vid that he since deleted, he had Flex Wheeler on with that one bald dude that got busted selling roids from that online "health" site - can't remember his name. He also got into an argument with Jerry Brainum, who was one of his best guests.
I still look forward to the Doug Brignole videos.

Agreed, always loved the Brainum vids. Interesting stuff in them. Did the argument happen in a recent vid? Can't seem to find anything unless it was a vid he also deleted.

I was there when Franco bent that iron bar in his mouth and blew up the hot water bottle until it exploded.....he was also a judge that day....while having his back to the audience seated at the judges table I honestly have never seen anyone with a back like he had......incredible thickness and lower lats that started at his ankles.....he looked incredible.

It's easy to criticize Franco 40 years later but back in the early seventies he truly was a freak
in his own unique way. Nobody to this day has that kind of chest. That prominent upper split.
When I first saw him in PI it was jaw dropping. Everyone had their own unique look during that era.
Now they all sort of blend together.
I always thought Franco was a better bber than Zane during their prime.
Agreed. I think the reason they all blend together now is insulin and growth. Everyone has the bloat look and I don’t think there are many pros that train for volume now.
Seemed most pros trained for longer periods of time until 2000s.

Drugs have replaced genetics.
You have a lot of guys with horrible genetics that can make up for it by using shit loads of drugs today.
The guys back in the 70's and 80's used a lot of steroids, but they were limited to only a few items.
Guys today have so many things to choose from including IGF, HGH, Slin, SARMS, other peptides. Also, they fill their lacking body parts with oil and other inflammatory compounds.
Bodybuilding today is 75% drugs and 25% genetics. It was the opposite back in the day.
