Robert Spencer:

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church stood in the shadow of the World Trade Center and was crushed under the rubble when the towers collapsed on September 11, 2001. Almost nine years later it has still not been rebuilt; the rebuilding project is mired in bureaucracy, with New York City officials being uncooperative and throwing up roadblock after roadblock.

The contrast is telling with the mad rush on the part of New York City officials to build the Islamic supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero, sweeping aside calls to landmark the Burlington Coat Factory building, into which crashed the landing gear from one of the 9/11 planes, as a war memorial -- despite the fact that buildings of far lesser historical significance have been designated as landmarks in New York.

From a March 2009 New York Times story on the church (where, incidentally, my mother was baptized):

"Last July, the Port Authority and the Greek Orthodox Church announced a tentative plan to rebuild the church just east of its original site, at Liberty and Greenwich Streets. The authority agreed to provide the church with land for a 24,000-square-foot house of worship, far larger than the original, and $20 million. Since the church would be built in a park over the bomb-screening center, the authority also agreed to pay up to $40 million for a blast-proof platform and foundation.

In recent negotiations, the authority cut the size of the church slightly and told church officials that its dome could not rise higher than the trade center memorial."

But a thirteen-story mega-mosque? Fine!

Unable to rebuild their church, the St. Nicholas congregation has held St. Nicholas Day services in a tent at Ground Zero:

But a thirteen-story Islamic supremacist mega-mosque headed by a pro-Sharia, anti-free speech imam who refuses to denounce Hamas and has a history of duplicitous statements? Let's clear aside every hurdle, tar opponents as bigots, and get that baby built!

More favoritism towards Muslims? You don't say!  ::)

Only Christians can be intolerant.  Muslims are misunderstood.  If we put a church there, it's a sign of forcing religion down everybody's throat.  A mosque is a symbol of hatred, intolerance, violence...er peace and love.

There are so many people who oppose this, yet those in power are walking backwards while holding their ankles regarding it.

The erection of this thing is going to cause a lot of problems.
People are growing more & more tired of having this double standard of tolerance and political correctness bullshit shoved up their asses and down their throats.

Eventually, somebody’s going to rebel.
It won’t be pretty.
And, I can’t say I blame them.
WTF do they expect?
You can only push people so far.

How did the US govt. swing from hating Muslims to suddenly embracing them? Are they just trying to make it look like they are not at war with Islam??

Maybe the church will get rebuilt once the Freedom Tower is up?

What a crock of shit story to stir the idiots up into a frenzy. I remember seeing that Greek Orthodox church about 12 years ago. It was a tiny thing sitting next to the WTC. Look to be about 30 feet wide and 30 feet deep and about two or three stories high. No activity in the church services sense or anything going on in there ever. If there are any road blocks it more than likely is to make sure nothing gets in the way of the rebuilding of the WTC, memorial area and area redevelopment first. Also that church sat on a rather odd parcel  of land (south side of Liberty street) that was very tiny itself...sort of like a fork in the road kinda strip of land that someone also dropped this church on.

No, the city of New York is NOT participating in the building of any Islamic supremacist mega church and neither is it at ground zero. The Mosque is build about five blocks north of where the towers once stood and can not even be seen from the GZ vantage point. The Burlington Coat factory building was NOT hit by landing gear from any plane on 911 (why is this writer LYING about that), it was a old decrepit building that was not being used (All businesses around the WTC were forced out by the city in 2005 in a plan that was to upgrade the entire area... which failed with the recession/depression of 2008 -), so far as landmark status and war memorial claims...this guy once again is an ass. Landmark status requires very specific architecture and time periods... the Burlington Coat factory was just old and run down even when there were businesses in there and NEVER was there any talk of the building being a WAR MEMORIAL WTF? Where did that rumor come from?

Nonetheless once the mosque is built someone should invite this writer in so he can find out what Islam is all about instead of standing outside with preconceived notions that are built on fears, ignorance, religious discrimination etc.

BTW... There is a large holocaust museum a few blocks south of the WTC... how come it is alright for that to be there? The supposed holocaust (which never happened) was in Germany...NOT AMERICA!

Do you think I'm going to read that shit? You have long since been exposed as a lying retard and I have no doubt that you've never stepped foot anywhere near NYC, katwa scum.

I'm not surprised that an uneducated Muslim supremacist like yourself is head-over-heels for this mosque.  ::)

Of course not. But the guy heading the project says "American donors" in English and "foreign donors" in Arabic. I think we all know where the money (which they still don't have yet are rushing to start construction) is coming from.  ::)

Oh…
Is that the same gentleman who just the other day declared that the United States didn’t deserve 911, but their policies were an accessory to what happened?

Yes, the same gentlemen who says he wants Sharia Law in America, that he doesn't believe in interfaith dialogue and who also refuses to denounce terrorists. But we're the intolerant group.   :D

BF - I live here, these muslims advocating for this are savages and animals, piss and shit be upon them.

There are literally hundreds of vacant properties all over the city and there is not a muslim community living in the financial district.  This onscenity is being built for one reason and one reason only, provocation, agitation, and victory.

And 240's bs about the constitution is a straw man argument.  Its not about whether they can build a mosque or not, its why at that exact spot while there are literally 100's of vacant properties all over the city where this thing can go.

Hey, I don't question the motive of those wanting to build.  I'm sure it's as hateful and spiteful as one can imagine.  I'm not defending that.

I'm saying constitutionally, you have to ignore the immature and impure motives of others, and just grit your teeth and say "I disagree with them - but according to this document, they can build there".

You're making it about right/wrong and analyzing their motive - but it's freedom of religion, no matter how messed up that might be.  Of course they can and should build elsewhere, and of course their motives aren't pure... but our founding fathers wanted them to have that right, which is why they wrote it into the constitution.

The constitution is not a suicide pact.

Stop with the flim flam nonsense.   This thing is an obsenity and should not be approved.  Where is the money coming from BTW?

The name alone confirms that it's being built as a sign of Islamic supremacism over us. "The Cordoba House" which is a reference to when Spain was ruled by Muslims and the three major religions supposedly "lived in harmony". What revisionist historians choose to ignore is the fact that Christians and Jews were allowed to practice their religions but treated like complete shit everywhere else. Among many other things, they had no say in government, had to wear different clothes marking their non-Muslim status, pay the jizyah and be subjected to multiple massacres over the years.

Political correctness and forced multi-culturalism. Look at Europe for a good example of this. The Dutch Queen threw out their recent election results because Geert Wilders, who is vehemently anti-Islam, won more votes than any other party. Democracy went straight out the window because people are pushing back against the liberals that are destroying their societies.

you know damn well i'm no sympathizer for their cause...

rather, the picking and choosing of what churches can go where.

"The wounds are still fresh" is subjective - and the constitutino shouldn't be subjective.  No church or any church - bottom line.

Yes you are 240.  By supporting this crap, you are not defending anything other than their advances, provocations, and insults while you know damn well this is not a constitutional issue.

i'm referring to the people saying it doesn't belong there because 'the wounds are fresh'.

Tell us they don't belong there because they don't match the zoning requirements.

Separation of church and state, remember?  take the religion-based emotion out of it.  This place of worship can be here, or it cannot, based upon the law... not the way you FEEL ABOUT IT.

Will you continue to parrot this claim now that it's been shown that houses of worship can't be built anywhere one wants to put one?

That’s hard to do when a “church” attacks a “state.”

It seems, though, that your unconditionally submissive liberalism prevents you from understanding that as you instead fight harder for the rights & freedoms of a religion whose people held a celebratory “Mardi Gras” in their streets upon learning of the world’s biggest news story of September 11, 2001.

I'm still waiting for 240 to give one valid reason as to why the rebuilding of a church that had stood at the WTC has been tied up in NYC bureaucracy for 9 years while the authorization of the building of a mosque that wasn't there before the attacks goes through in less than 6 months.  ::)
