not focused at all. 2 dropped batons, tripping on hurdles, gasing out 40meters from finish line, tyson gay nutting up and folding like a tent in semi's....insane. No concentration period. money 4 gold medals in the drain.....and let me not...tyson can indeed run sub 9.6 for those who don't follow track at all...he nutted up big time IMO. Huge disappointment I must say.
as far as the medal count...we are up actually overall in "T&F" medal count just only 4 golds out of 20 total count. So we are medaling in Track and Field at least.
china taking home that amount of golds in the other games is insane imo. Mostly games that require "judging and scoring"

The majority of the world is such a mess and would be a bigger mess if not for our financial aid. It's almost like the U.S. has to pick up and dust off those who aren't able to go it on their own. Very childish and irrelevant post. Obviously every race has genetics suited to particular sports, Chinese as well as most Asians recognise they will never have the explosive power that US has. However, they do have very good eye hand coordination and therefore aim to collect as many medals as possible in the events they are best suited to. It is similar to a Country which specialises in a particular raw material and in one in which they enjoy comparative advantage.
To compare US track and field to Chinese track and field is like comparing apples and oranges, its is similar to them comparing US table tennis to Chinese table tennis.
Please guys grow-up, obviously China has put a lot of emphasis on performing well in these games as they are home nation after all. The Olympics IMO and generally the opinion of most athletes should never bring politics into the sport - that is generally what the Olympics stands for and the reason why Black athletes were criticised so heavily for the black power celebrations all those years ago. This is a sporting extravaganza and should not take politics into account.
China did well and i feel USA underperformed in track and field and were not as dominant as in previous games. I am sure this will only spur the US to bigger and better things come 2012 - sometimes people need a kick up the back side to let them know they are slacking or the competition is strengthening.

I don't agree. I feel if that were the case china would always perform like they have this olympics making this discussion non existant. They have far exceeded any other summer games in their history this season (which is fine)...but they don't have a history of domination (total nor gold medals earned) to support your claim.

But hey, the billions they dumped into the Olympics and the millions of dollars they spend every year to make sure a couple thousand athletes train 12 hours a day, eat the best food and live in the best homes sure goes real far when they win a few medals at the Olympics.
China implemented program 119 after 2000. They set out to target events that had multiple medal opportunities because they're hell bent on winning more medals than anyone else. All the training in the world and they still travel in the over all.
Maybe they should cheat more like they did with their women's gymnastics team. Hopefully they end up losing the 4 or so medals they won with them.

And Chinese, being much smarter than americans, will keep on growing all the way to world domination in 20 years or so. If they already kick U.S. ass at the olympics while still being far from reaching their potential, what will the olympics in 2028 be like? Probably something like China 50 golds, U.S. 20 golds. You are an idiot. The thread starter only compared gold medal count. His only basis for claiming Chinese superiority was HOW many gold medals they won, while at the same time ignoring how many medals in total were won by the USA. The TOTAL number of medals is what it is important as that is the number that is always emphasized at the end of each Olympics. Emphasized by EACH country.
Countries like the USA, RUSSIA and China don't go into the games thinking "Oh, we will see how many medals we get in the events that is more suitable to us". That is your thinking and it is an over analyzed point at that. I was addressing what the basis of the thread starter's thinking. Which was China was the top dog because it had more medals. Nothing could be farther from the truth and unlike you I supported mine with stats.

Not to be super fruity, but even to get to the Olympics is a huge acccomplishment, and Bob Costas is pissing me right off acting like people who won silvers and bronzes "failed", to win an Olympic silver is great, to even make finals is great. I don't hate U.S. - when has stating obvious facts become "hating"? I think U.S. is a great country, and I visit U.S. few times a year. I'm just stating facts and the fact that many people here can't accept them is not my problem. U.S. is living in denial in so many ways anyways, it doesn't surprise me americans are so defensive every time anything negative is discussed.

Over 500 million people in China live on roughly $2 a week. But hey, the billions they dumped into the Olympics and the millions of dollars they spend every year to make sure a couple thousand athletes train 12 hours a day, eat the best food and live in the best homes sure goes real far when they win a few medals at the Olympics.
China implemented program 119 after 2000. They set out to target events that had multiple medal opportunities because they're hell bent on winning more medals than anyone else. All the training in the world and they still travel in the over all.
Maybe they should cheat more like they did with their women's gymnastics team. Hopefully they end up losing the 4 or so medals they won with them.

A lot of things can go wrong before that happens. Their government could collapse in a rebellion. World war could break out. Their economy could go into the shitter and collapse. Human capital is the most important resource over time, and more and more top students will continue to go back home and set up new businesses. As for spending on the Olympic, this is often very good idea to regenerate an Economy with massive fiscal budget - often always leads to a bubble however with high inflation but you fail to recognise that the Country has caught the attention of many large companies and foreign investment. These companies will look for value when the bubble breaks and things get back to a more invest-able level.
I am an investor / trader but if you asked where i would put my long term investments for the next 30 years you can be damn sure it will not be the US. India is my most attractive prospect with its large middle class and huge surge in billionaires - all will add to more and more investment and self made entrepreneurs in that Country. China is a close 2nd after i see some more reform towards a democracy.

Just about all economic strong nations have immigrants trying to get in, and all have huge problems. USA is not alone in that and anyone who thinks so obviously is unaware of world affairs.
You may think you nation is best, great. It is a great nation. I adore mine. Canada is great. Australia is fantastic. Numerous European nations are great. New Zealand is strong. They are all different. US offers many things other nations don't, while other nations offer things USA doesn't, free health, free college, zero income tax, lower crime etc.
All the first world nations are great and you can prosper in all of them. All the 3rd world nationals try to immigrate to them. The best nation comes down to opinion. I've traveled the world and seen much great nations, and some sad nations. The difference is between 1st world and 3rd.

As an american, you shouldn't make any remarks about human rights, because your own country is a great example when it comes to oppress racial or economical minority's. Don't forget that you live in the most racist country in the world, where black people doesn't have equal rights even this day. Chinese have their faults, but even so they kick your ass in many ways, not only in olympics. They have higher average IQ, meaning that in similar tests than americans, they score higher points, they have better average mathematics skills, meaning that in similar tests than americans, they score higher points. You can find all of that from the internet, so don't take my word for it, but look at yourself. There is many statistic made by objective international organisations which prove all this and many other things.
When you use a computer, do you know where it has been made? Just about 80% of computer electronics in the world is made in china/asian countries, no matter which brand or type your computer is, so you could say that they have a quite good lead compared to USA. What you have equally important to the modern world? Smith & Wesson, Colt, Remington etc.? Zippo? General Motors? Coca Cola, Big Mac...They own their shares even all those. They are on the leading edge of technology, and they have a manpower to stay there, so it is better to not underestimate them.
I have been in China few times, it is nice place to be on vacation. People are very friendly and hospitality is up on the different level than it is in america. They are your friends, not ass kissers like americans, they share everything with you, not just talking bullshit chit chat like you guys. Wonderful country, even with its faults. I don't use package tours, I just fly there and wonder around few months, living in village motels or as a house quest of some local family. When guy like me, who is finnish and quite big, travels there, there is no troubles what so ever. People come talk to me on the streets, they tell about their life, and when I told them I'm from Finland, they know all about Mika Häkkinen, Kimi Räikkönen, our olympic champions, and some of them knows even Riku Kiri and Jouko Ahola. Nice country, beautiful girls, nice people. Their government and communistic system is a pain in the ass, but it is somewhat necessary in country like that, where third of the people lives houses which has plain ground floors. When they get their systems up and running for democracy, and that isn't very far, that will be something to see for americans and a rest of the world.

They are paid by the state to be an athlete. It is their full time job up untill the time the state decides they are no longer competitive. Depending on the atheletes success, they will them be offered a government job. Those not successfulwill have to find their own way. The sports system in China is very structured and quite interesting as to how what is allowed.

What? Now the federal government is responsible for 1) hurricanes and 2) instructing a STATE to take precautions? The state has to request the aid of the federal government first. That's why its called the "UNITED STATES" of America. And if you have been to New Orleans, you scratch your head as to why anyone would live there, in regards to storms. The city is below sea level. If you drive across the state of Louisiana, at the southern end, you will observe that most of the roads are on elevated bridges. So after a while you would think common sense would prevail and people would not live in a massive floodplain. But it's a free country and people can choose to live where they want. But don't expect me, a US taxpayer, to want to keep bailing these people out who won't recognize the obvious.

I have competed, and still do, as a bicycle racer. I am quite happy to get a silver medal in the state road race championships. So I didn't get gold. The other guy was better. But I am still 2nd best, and beat a lot of other people. Devastation? Huh?
Now silver or bronze at the Olympics doesn't mean you were the best at anything? Do you actually know anyone who was good enough to get a silver medal or bronze medal in the Olympics? I do. I am good friends with Steve Bauer, the Canadian silver medalist in cycling in LA. He told me that although he was disappointed at not getting gold, the silver medal was a dream.
And what did China win? (or any other country that leads in Olympic Gold medals)? I hope their people are ecstatic and have great pride. But at the end of the day, people go back to work and lead their lives. It's still the Olympic GAMES. Not the Olympic "WORLD WAR". Nobody dies because they lost.
