Ok, I will admit that my nomination for "Abbey Road" was more personal than totally objective. So to keep it more objective, I replace "Abbey Road" with "Sgt. Pepper's".

Even during the eras you listed there was always bubble gum pop music whose demographic is 12 year old girls. Rock music caters to a completely different demographic.

If aliens landed, and you had to explain rock 'n' roll to 'em in 3 albums.

Mine

Van Halen's debut
AC/DC: Back in Black Powerage
Black Sabbath: Heaven and Hell Mob Rules

That's more like it.

Love how slash is so wasted he starts playing the intro in the wrong
key. In watching a guns tributeband this weekend seen them before and the place goes nuts when they play this.

They were a pop vocal group. You're an idiot.

There was plenty of somber and introspective music in the 80s too, but it didnt hit the mainstream until bands like nirvana

No kidding.  The Smiths rocked cocks all over town, probably the best band of the 80's.  Talking Heads, etc.  Plenty of awesome 80's music, it just didn't get tv play as much as Poison and Madonna did.

GNR?  Give me a break, they had one good album ever.  Not awesome, just good album.

Welcome to the Jungle feels like an awesome song at first. But more you listen to it more you realise how boring the song actually is.

oh yeah....I was just listennng to the Heads live at My Fathers Place in Roslyn NY......circa 1779. They were great. Same with the Smith's. ..one of the most underrated bands ever.  Kinda for swept under the rug with "new wave". You also had The Melvins...Screaming trees......Mudhoney...Hu sker Du........Pixies.....ban ds that were the beginning of Grunge. I absolutley loved Kings X...but only people which knew them were guitar players...and only smart ones. LOL

I thought we were talking about big acts....in 1985 I doubt 75% if young adults could tell you who Johnny Mar was

I'm fine with that, as long as the kids in the audience watching the Smiths were Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder and Cornell, et al.   ;)

They were watching the melvins and Mudhoney and Pixies. If you listen to the Pixies its obvious how much they inspired Cobain. ....with the whole soft/LOUD/soft dynamic that became a cliche by the mid 90's.

Cornell was Into all sorts of shit....Early Soundgarden had horn parts in it and they would bounce from straight metal to chili-pepperesque beats.

Actually, I'd say that The Beatles really hit their stride when they released the Revolver album.

I think early Soundgarden sounded a lot like Sabbath.
