Big John stopped the fight at exactly the right time. Chuck legs had gone dead, and, while he wasn't completely unconscious, he was defenseless.

I've said this before, with MMA blowing up, the last thing the sport needs is a serious injury or death because a ref didn't get in there on time.

In boxing, when a fighter goes down, the other fighter, unless he's deranged, will step away and ref will begin the count. If the fighter doesn't get up by 10, that's it. There's no decision for the ref. In MMA, you're allowed to hit a downed fighter, so, the ref ALWAYS has a decision to make. Some are easier than others. That's why you'll always have more second guessing of refs in MMA.

Just saw the fight...

If that was anybody but Liddell, I'd say yeah, call it over; but I honestly think Liddell could've found a way to get up from that beating...  He just recovers quickly and is crafty.  Based on the strategy Chuck was employing, however (i.e., running), I think he'd've lost anyway (you'll never beat Jackson by running from him - that was terrible strategy by Chuck - ); I just don't think he should've lost on the fight being called too soon.  For all the major media attention the fight gathered, I further think this fight can only be viewed as a major disappointment for the UFC.  Thoughts, anyone?  Am I completely wrong about Chuck being able to snake out of that beating?

you and MAYBE chuck are the only ones that think this

Chuck did not have a prayer of getting back up.  I thought Chuck  would have been a little more durable.  He was just way too exposed trying to box Rampage.
I would love to see Chuck use some of his grappling and collegiate wrestling experience.

Chuck was out after the elbow, and was awoken with the last punch.  He was clearly on queer street when BJM stepped in.  No way he could've came back to win.  It is ALWAYS Chuck's strategy to retreat and counterpunch.  He does it nearly every fight until he hurts someone, then he jumps on them.  This definitely isn't a major disappointment for Zuffa.  In Page, they got a charismatic pitch guy who excels at giving entertaining interviews.  They can get behind him and build him like they did Chuck.

No doubt, 'Page' will be very marketable.  I just wish they could get a good 'war' to really push UFC/MMA forward on one of these high-profile fights.

They got Shogun, prolly will have Kang soon, and Hollywood.  Talent is rich in the 185 and 205 category.

he stoppage was a good call. if you watch youll see chucks arms to totally limp out to his sides...meaning he couldnt defend himself anymore so stopping it was right.

i watched a replay on one of our sports channels last night and at one point just after it was stopped it shows chuck sitting on the ground his guys all around him. his eyes were definately not focused and you could see him ask someone "what happened".

good stoppage by big john

agree completely. Chuck was dead, it doesnt matter if it was for just seconds...he was completely out of this world at that moment. arms and legs completely numb

Man, for now on Rampage is on my favorite fighters list!!! HAHAHAHAHA

Finally someone put that Chuck on his place...on the ground, ko´ed...And the most beautiful thing: he was beat on his own game!!! HAHAHAHHAAH

as much as i like Chuck, he was out of it and could have been seriously hurt had Big John decided to let it go for a few more seconds. He was limp, couldnt focus and certainly couldnt defend himself. A fantastic win for Rampage, however i dont like his chances in his next fight! Looks like Chucks gonna have to wait for that rematch again

I disagree, based upon the fact that Chuck's eyes were glazed over when John finally got him up off of his flat back onto one shoulder, and Chuck was looking in the direction of the camera...I've been there and have seen that look too many times (!) in fighters.  Rampage was all over Chuck after he dropped him with that right hook and was "grounding and pounding" Chuck unmercilessly when John pulled him off...and, oh yes, Chuck did "go flat" as Joe/Randy astutely observed/commented.

What shocked me was that Rampage beat Chuck at his own game...stand-up punching!??  I assumed Chuck was THE BEST in that area of the game!??

Observations...Chuck seemed to be relatively soft around his mid-section this time...Chuck was blinking in the stare-down...Rampage was the aggressor from the very start and, even though Chuck likes you to come after him and specializes in counter-punching, Chuck seemed to be "backing off much more" than usual.

Again, to beat Chuck at his OWN game of "toe-to-toe slugging it out"...that is REALLY something!

Chuck rarely "slugs it out" with anyone. He was fed a steady stream of good wrestlers with sub-par standup skills. It was easy for him to look good against them.

Chuck couldn't sprawl and brawl with someone who wasn't shooting.  Rampage stood in the pocket and was loading up to throw bombs.  Just like he did in the first fight.  Page's big slams are incidental.  He isn't a classic freestyle wrestler who will shoot a double from four feet away.  (Din Thomas shot off of a cross was a thing of beauty, BTW)

Page was already in Chuck's head.  He wanted nothing to do with Page's power in his hands, on a right cross that Q threw, Chuck raised his left arm in a "wing" block and scampered backwards.  On the bodyhook, he didn't cover with his right and ate the perfect counter in the right hook.  Chuck is succeptible to a flash KO, just watch his Pele fight from IVC.

Chuck was dead in the water and he should thank McCarthy for pulling him out of the pool.

So how about on the Rampage/Henderson card we see Chuck/Wand and Shogun/Machida.  I'd drop 50 to see that.

I think it is funny when people keep saying this. Prior to Rampage coming to the UFC and Pride being bought who were the top contenders in the UFC? Grapplers and BJJ guys. Also Randy Couture who is mainly grappler knocked down a 265lbs heavyweight (yea I knwo it was Tim S but hey). There is no doubt that Rampage deserved to win, he caught him plain and simple. And besides I recall Chuck "slugging" it out with Metzger, Overeem and Belfort? Rampage is a beast....

Funny how a lot of people suddenly jump on page's bandwagon.

Silva and Shogun slugged it out with page and destroyed him. Don't get me wrong, Quinton is very good, but i wouldn't call him dominant. Too many guys out there can beat him. Interesting division, i don't think rampage will hold the belt for long though.

the victory against Belfort was really a matter of point of view, and even like that, he won by points...he just had ONE good moment on fight wich was decisive in judges opinions for what it seems...
Belfort at that time had just got out of a Reality Show here in Brazil, more or less like Big Brother...he was there for like 1 or 2 months (i dont recall exactly) and he got the fight right after leaving there...He wasnt prepared for the fight, but the contract was very clear about when the fight was going to take place...He accepted it...and we saw what hapenned...
Not saying that Chuck would not win in other circumstances, but if Belfort was really prepared for that fight, the result could be a lot different

Funny how a lot of people suddenly jump on page's bandwagon.

Not jumping on the Rampage bandwagon always liked the way he fought. I watched the Silva fight and until Wandy got him in the clinch I would say it was pretty even (IMHO). I should have rephrased my initial comment Rampage looked like a beast Saturday night. Personally I think styles make fights and Rampage just has a style that will beat Chuck 8 out of 10 times. Unless Liddell spends some time working on his striking defense I don't see this outcome changing. Interestingly I think style wise Shogun and Wandy are a better matchup for Liddell (again IMHO). Anyway I was not trying to say that Q is the second coming just giving him his "props" on the win.

I agree that he might not be holding the belt for long Henderson is extremely tough. Good hands, good defense, great takedowns....

the victory against Belfort was really a matter of point of view,

I did not know and that is a fantastic point. Unfortunately we will never know what the outcome would have been ... Great thing about the internet someone can always provide insight into these things..
