Title: What's a good gift for a man
Post by: w8m8 on February 23, 2011, 07:18:01 AM
to say Thank You ...  that's not personal at all and is respectful

any ideas ?

I have one idea so far .. a gift card to a nice man's store so he can get a tie or something similar

(with just a plain Thank You card)

Hmmmmm does he have any favorite sports teams? Hobbies?

Best Buy and Dicks are good ideas

but if he likes to wear nice things, then definately something to a store he likes

Yeah, be careful with the men's store.  The gift card could end up never getting used if he's the type of guy who never steps foot into a mall.  Not too much one could get at Best Buy other than a DVD or accessory (assuming $25-$50 gift card).  Bookstore = good, sporting goods = good.  Maybe a hardware store (guys love hardware stores), movie theater, car washes.

This is an excellent suggestion!!! ;D

Although Princess has a good point, it's possible the guy may never use the gift card to the men's store.

LETS go ;D

In all seriousness w8, I'm sure the man would appreciate and generally be thankful for whatever you give him. It's a nice gesture

It depends on the occasion.  What is the gift for?

oh I've just re-read the thread.  It's to say thank-you.

So then no gift.  Just say 'thank-you ever so very much' in person.

A gift is over-generous or even over-doing it unless it's Christmas or Birthday or he's specifically asked for something he likes of yours.

What I do if a gesture really must be made and you're sending it in the post because you'd have to travel to see him is, and this costs £1: Make a daft card with all stars and roses and kisses and thankyou's and then spend the £1 on a luckydip lottery ticket, shove that in the envelope, stick a stamp on it and if you don't hear back, well don't be so generous or grateful next time...

Id say either one of these w8m8...

also and yes i know its sad, learning about him may get misconstrued as you taking interest in him. If he is interested in you and looking for a sign. You learning about what he likes/needs could be taken the wrong way(yes guys are stupid but women are ignorant in the same respect) the gift card to a sports store or hardware store is personal enough without being to personal...if that makes sense.

just my humble opinion  :)

Thank you tony .. I understand completely .. he's an older gentleman who is very happily married and the last thing I want to do is cross any line .. it's just a gesture to let him know I truly appreciate something very nice he's doing for me that is very generous on his part

Thank you Linda .. the community I live in is a little different than where you have been .. it's more of a everyone knows everyone and shows thanks in a bit more thoughtful way when people do something very nice for you .. I've certainly done the lottery ticket thing for the teens that I get to help me with small things .. a meal and a lottery ticket makes them pretty happy .. I am very grateful for this mans generosity and feel blessed he is helping me out as much as he is

A good gift to a happily married man 'who is helping you out' would be to be gracious and kind to his lovely wife.  Ask her what he'd like from you as a thankyou?

Otherwise it's just plain strange?  Involve her, make her your new best friend as well as him...

?
xLinda

do not mess with or even give time to married men, especially happily married ones.  If he's doing you big indescribable unable to know how to thank him favours, something's going on and I'd run the other way.

Not necessarily Linda.  Some men can be kind and generous without ulterior motives.  It's called good character and integrity.  I wouldn't give a second thought to my husband helping out someone who needed it (male or female).

I love that show!  Although some of the scenarios they come up with are a little out there.  They say they really happen though  :-\

My favorite was the one with the drunk man laying on the sidewalk and the homeless woman trying to get him some help.  Made me  :'( and   >:(  I'm glad they followed up and tracked her down and got her some help too.

Another good one was the guy putting something into a girls drink while she went to the ladies room.

Absolutely, and those are the ones who must always be thanked.

But honestly, (although it seems you've misread me and construe me to be out of line), please, really really really?  do be careful of happily married men doing you favours...

Not kidding. $1000 can go a long way at Best Buy. It took me more than a year to use it all.  Or did you think I meant $1, as in one dollar? ???

To this day I consider it a great gift.  I realize not everyone wants to spend that kind of money. $500 or even a $100 gift card is something any guy would appreciate. :)

yep, I clocked your k and realised that we're not talking about kiddie pressies...

What I wonder is what this gift you've received was for?  Surely that was from a loved one, a family member or else from a hugely grateful client?

Are we doing a thread about 'the best present I've ever received'?

Or are we doing one on how to politely thank a happily married man who has recently driven us someplace or helped us move a cupboard?  There's a massive line between small favours and huge ones...

with love

We don't have 'What Would You Do' here in UK.  So I'm assuming it's some kind of staged reality show, making fools of people, like Candid Camera or You've Been Framed, wherein the unsuspecting punter gets landed in a situation and they film his/her reaction?

It'll be on here soon I guess.

Man, I so totally hate reality TV, I won't be watching it.

Is it perhaps something like "Britain Has Talent/aka Simon Cowell Exploits The Mentally Challenged"?

It's more about real live situations that are in the news headlines... college hazing, racism, public humiliation, discrimination...

This is the episode that made me  :'(

sorry, Princess L, but I dont ever click any of those boxes in case it's all virus.  (I have an 11-year old purple iMac and I wouldn't be able to see it anyways)

I don't trust anyone. My lovely old 'puter is on her last legs, never broken yet, but I'm not pushing her.  Think this machine was invented prior to jpg.  Stalkers regularly hack.

Can we do a Steve Jobs valadictory complimentary thread?  I hear the man who invented this beautiful purple thing I adore so much which I bought for £999 in 1999, the man who went on to oversee the ipod and the iphone, is 6 weeks from death?  Oh I wish he could live.

nope not on commision at brookstone.  They offer an incentive but usually only after you sell five or more.  you get $250, after you sell 10 you get $500 then it changes.  Mot associates/managers barely reach the $250 mark.  They are about ot change the incentive program too, more than lkely going to get less money.
