In less than a week, the city’s $50 million “crown jewel’’ pool in Brooklyn’s McCarren Park has turned into a mini-war zone, where frightening melees have injured two cops and a lifeguard.
The Greenpoint pool reopened last week with a splashy ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Bloomberg speaking of its “illustrious past and bright future.’’
But yesterday, hundreds of frustrated people were forced to stand in lines that stretched around the block as they waited to be searched by members of a force of 30 security officers that included 20 cops.
With temperatures flirting with 90 degrees yesterday, many got hot under the collar and took out their frustrations on the guards.
“I’m gonna come back and smoke your ass,” a teenager ranted at a Parks employee who turned him away from the main gate. “If not me, someone else is!”
The worker claimed that the teenager had been part of a fracas earlier this week.
Rodoldo Torres (inset), 20, one of three men arrested Monday for allegedly punching a cop in the face, was arraigned early today in night court on two counts of assault. Torres, who was still wearing his black and white swim trunks and a tank top, was released without bail.
Councilman Steve Levin said he has gotten many complaints. “People are really upset,’’ he said. “They’re saying, ‘This is supposed to be good, wholesome fun for the family. What is going on here?’ ”
McCarren opened in 1936 and almost immediately gained the “crown jewel’’ title. It closed in 1984 because of the city’s budget woes and a history of violence. It reopened in a changed, gentrified neighborhood last Thursday.
“The city’s had 28 years to get a proper security plan together for this pool, but they clearly failed,” said Geoffrey Croft of NYC Park Advocates.
Parks brass downplayed the disturbances.
“The few minor incidents have not impacted the vast majority of pool attendees, just as similar incidents at pools across the city don’t stop New Yorkers from enjoying themselves,” said Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey.

Me too, if he was released without bail, they possibly mean on his own recog.---which technically means he still has a bail. But being held without bail is, there is no bail set, Held w/o.

Days after an unruly crowd attacked lifeguards at Brooklyn's newly renovated McCarren Park pool, a police officer was punched in the face and another hurt his wrist in a confrontation with swimmers, authorities said.
Police said the officers, who were assigned to the pool, were injured Monday when trying to enforce the "No Dive" rule. A 20-year-old swimmer punched one of the officers in the side of the face. The second officer hurt his wrist while trying to handcuff the swimmer, police said.
Both officers were taken to Bellevue Hospital. Charges are pending against the 20-year-old suspect.
In a separate incident at the pool Monday, police say a 17-year-old man and an 18-year-old man were arrested and charged with inciting to riot against an officer and disorderly conduct.
Both incidents happened at about 5:30 p.m. The pool remained open.
Authorities heightened security at the public Olympic-sized pool after swimmers attacked a lifeguard who told them not to do backflips into the water on Friday.
No arrests were made in that incident.
"Every day since opening, the pool has operated at full 1,500-person capacity throughout the day," said Michael Dockett, Assistant Commissioner of Urban Park Service. "Parks Enforcement Patrol is present at all large city pools, and visitors who repeatedly violate the rules lose their right to use them."
The pool had been used as concert site in Williamsburg before the $50 million renovation. The pool was first opened in 1936 by then-Parks Commissioner Robert Moses

I know of a city that permanently closed a few public pools because of problems with "thugs" (by thugs I mean the African American Commoonity). The last straw was the attempted rape of a 14 year old girl (guess her race).

I live here and saw the nightly news report. Did not have to make any assumptions. Place looks like the monorail exhibit at the Bronx Zoo.

If I had the money, Id go with the Kimber MEU SOC, same sidearm the MARSOC guys use. The standard issue sidearm for the Marine Corp is the Beretta 9mm, the MARSOC guys get a Kimber 1911. Fucking operators and their toys.
If I had to choose a 9mm, I'd probably take the Sig P226 Navy that the NSW guys use.

I used to have an office next door to the Kimber plant in Yonkers, N.Y. Low key place at the end of a dead end street. No one in the nabe even really knows about it.
I had a dispute w their lawyer who was a prick over my client polluting their yard w paint runoff. Can't blame him since my client at the time was a mess.

I like blacks, i hate the thugs. I am around 90% majorities (in the Bronx of course) all the time and get along fine. Older black people are some on the nicest people you will ever meet.
