Obama puts Reid in the spotlight
By: Carol E. Lee and Molly Ball
October 22, 2010 10:46 PM EDT

LAS VEGAS — Of all the races in the country this year, none is as important to President Barack Obama as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s reelection campaign.

The race carries unrivaled symbolism for Obama, who would emerge even more politically wounded than anticipated if Republicans defeat his top Democrat in the Senate.

The stakes were in full display Friday night at an outdoor rally in Las Vegas, when Obama — whose name has been chanted over the past three days by crowds at events from Seattle to Los Angeles — made a rare move and led the crowd in a chant of “Har-ry!”

“I appreciate everybody saying Obama,” the president said as thousands of supporters screamed “O-bam-a!”

“But I want everybody to say Harry,” Obama yelled, leading them on moments after he stood on the stage with Reid, a former boxer, holding his hand in the air as though he had won a fight.

Reid is locked in a tight race against Republican Sharron Angle, a tea party favorite who has continued to be a force despite several high-profile campaign missteps. Obama made his fourth trip to Nevada Friday for a week-before-the-election rally and fundraiser to help Reid squeak out a victory despite low popularity in his home state and an adverse political climate.

The president vouched for Reid, whose opponent is running ads suggesting he got rich off of his position in the Senate, as an advocate for the middle class.

“Harry has never forgotten what it’s like to grow up in Searchlight, Nev. He knows what it’s like to be poor. He knows what it’s like to work hard. He knows what it’s like to hit some bumps in the road,” Obama said. “Neither Harry and I were born with a silver spoon in our mouths. Our families were working folk.”

For Obama, Reid’s campaign has all the elements that have made this election cycle a tumultuous one for Democrats.

His challenger has tea party backing, and few places in the nation have been as hard hit by the economic crisis than Nevada, where the unemployment rate is more than14 percent and the rate of foreclosures is the highest in the nation.

Reid’s race raises the stakes for Obama because of unique circumstances where all it could take for him to win would be large Democratic turnout — the president’s main 2010 role — and because it’s been cast as referendum on the White House’s big-ticket victories, all of which Reid helped muscle through: health care reform, financial regulatory reform, the economic stimulus package.

Reid is counting on minor-party candidates, including a Tea Party ballot line, and Nevada’s unique “none of the above” voting option to siphon votes from Angle, who also has low popularity in Nevada. Political strategists, including those working on Reid’s campaign, believe the dynamic would allow Reid to win with substantially less than 50 percent of the vote. Democrats have a registration edge of 60,000 more voters than Republicans, a 5-point advantage that's decreased from more than 100,000 two years ago.

To get there, Reid is counting on Democratic turnout, powered by his statewide campaign organization, which he largely built in 2008 and thought would pay off for him in 2010. Indeed, the Obama organizational juggernaut was kept in place as Reid's reelection geared up.

In that sense, Reid’s election offers a test of whether Obama’s 2008 grass-roots organization will remain a force in 2012.

Obama, who arrived in Las Vegas after campaign stops in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, tried to inspire Nevada Democrats not to wait for Nov. 2 to cast their ballots. He reminded the crowd at a middle school in Las Vegas that early voting is already underway.

“You have to vote everybody,” he said. He even directed them to a nearby polling center and told them what time to be there. “Don’t wait,” he said. “Don’t wait.”

Angle is hoping she can capitalize on Obama’s visit as well. Her campaign is employing the same strategy as Reid’s: using the president to help drive turnout.

Obama won Nevada by 12 percentage points in 2008 after the state had twice swung for George W. Bush. But just 39 percent of Nevada voters held a favorable view of Obama in an August poll. And new jobs figures released Friday showed that Nevada still continues to be the state with the highest unemployment rate: 14.4 percent.

To coincide with the president’s visit, Angle’s campaign released a video juxtaposing Obama’s campaign promises with Nevada’s dire statistics.

“Harry Reid is the closest thing this election to Barack Obama’s name being on the ballot,” Angle spokesman Jarrod Agen said.

Knocking off the Senate majority leader of the same party as a sitting president has strong political significance. Majority leaders are often election-year targets for the opposing party. The most recent case was in 2004, when Republicans defeated Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, an Obama mentor.

The White House has poured many of its resources into Reid’s reelection bid. Obama’s visit follows Vice President Joe Biden’s trip to Reno, Nev., on Wednesday, and before Nov. 2, Reid will get a campaign stop from first lady Michelle Obama, who has already done an event with him in the state.

But White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was reluctant to characterize Reid’s race as the most important one on the ballot.

“Senator Reid is somebody who has obviously done a lot to ensure our success in the United States Senate [and] was a supporter, somebody who urged the president to run very early,” Gibbs told reporters when asked about the significance of the election. “And it’s a very important race.”

Gibbs, speaking aboard Air Force One Thursday during Obama’s campaign swing, also took a few shots at Angle, who had previously advocated the elimination of Social Security and was recently caught on video telling a group of Hispanic high school students that they looked “Asian.”

“Look at the number of controversial comments that get made,” he said, describing her as “somebody who seems to be well out of the mainstream of where voters are in the state of Nevada.”

Reid, who reminded voters that Obama visited Nevada 22 times during the 2008 campaign, used some of his time at the podium Friday night to attack Angle’s views, calling them “extreme” and “dangerous.”

Facing a state in dire economic conditions, he said he’s got “important issues” on his mind: “jobs, jobs and more jobs.”

And he asked voters to let him keep his.

Meet Sharron

Sharron Angle was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon on July 26, 1949. Her father worked in the family business, a potato farm, until he enlisted in the Navy and fought in WWII. After WWII, her father was called up a second time for the Korean conflict. Sharron, her parents and her three younger brothers moved to Reno, Nevada after her father's discharge where they owned and operated a small motel for over 20 years.

Sharron Angle graduated from Wooster High School in Reno. Four years later, she earned her BA in Fine Arts from the University of Nevada Reno.

While a senior at University of Nevada Reno, Sharron married Ted Angle. Sharron and Ted have two children and ten grandchildren.

Upon graduation Sharron and her husband left Reno and spent the next 25 years living the rural Nevada towns of Ely, Winnemucca and Tonopah. During that time she worked as a substitute teacher in public schools; taught art courses at Western Nevada Community College (now Great Basin Community College) in Winnemucca for five years; and co-founded, administrated, and taught grades K-12 in a one-room Christian school of 24 students for two years. While in Tonopah, Sharron also tutored at Nye County Juvenile Justice for six years and operated the Tonopah Life Center (family-oriented fitness gym.)

Sharron was first elected in 1992 to the Nye County School Board of Trustees. The family moved back to Reno in 1995 and in 1998 she was elected to the Nevada State Assembly where she faithfully served until 2006 fighting for smaller government, lower taxes, and a better Nevada for future generations. She is proud of her past chairwomanship of We the People Nevada PAC that sponsored the Property Tax Restraint Initiative.

A true protector of the Nevada Constitution, Sharron has fought and won judicial battles to protect Nevadan's constitutional rights. In 2003 while serving as the Minority Whip in the Nevada State Assembly, Sharron challenged the Governor's proposed massive $800 million tax hike. Supported by Nevada's constitutional requirement that all tax increases be approved by a two-thirds super majority, battle lines were drawn between the Republicans in the Assembly and the Governor. Sharron and fourteen other courageous Republicans consistently voted against the tax measure through the end of the regular session of the legislature and on through two special sessions. The Governor then sued the legislature in Angle v Guinn to force a decision by the Nevada Supreme Court. The Court over-ruled the two-thirds requirement which meant the taxes were to be imposed through a simple majority rather than by two-thirds vote. Using her own funds, Sharron hired Dr. John Eastman of the Claremont Institute to defend the Nevada's Constitution against this injury. Angle and Eastman took this case to Federal District Court in Nevada, which ended up referring the case to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, then finally to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The attention from Angle v Guinn resulted in the members of the Nevada Supreme Court which made that ruling either retired or were replaced through election defeat. Subsequently the new Court reversed the decision in 2007 reinstating the two-thirds requirement in the Constitution. In recognition of her fight to protect the Constitution, Sharron received the prestigious Claremont Institute Ronald Reagan Freedom Medallion for Courageous Client in 2004.

Though this was a personally costly case for Sharron to defend, this is precisely what she believes the founding fathers meant when they said we must "pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor" to protect our freedom and liberty.

In addition to her proud service in the Nevada legislature, Sharron has been an active member of the Republican Party for many years. She currently serves on the Nevada State Central Committee and has been the chairman of the Washoe County GOP precinct organization effort.

Sharron Angle is also a proud member of the Gun Owners of America, National Right to Life Committee, Concerned Women for America, Nevada Republican Assembly, Washoe County Republican Party, and Fellowship Community Church.

Yes, she seems to have plenty of experience for that job.

Why do you think BILLY would post such untruths about her, though?

Voters Suspicious Of Fraud At Ballot Box

Election Registrar Says Election Fraud-Free

POSTED: 9:49 pm PDT October 25, 2010
UPDATED: 7:35 am PDT October 26, 2010

facebookdel.icio.usbuzzd iggreddit›› Email›› PrintLAS VEGAS -- Some voters in Boulder City said they are concerned about fraud at the electronic ballot box.

Voter Joyce Ferrara said when they went to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, her Democratic opponent, Sen. Harry Reid's name was already checked.

Ferrara said she wasn't alone in her voting experience. She said her husband and several others voting at the same time all had the same thing happen.

"Something's not right," Ferrara said. "One person that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several within a five minute period of time -- that's wrong."

Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said there is no voter fraud, although the issues do come up because the screens are sensitive. For that reason, a person may not want to have their fingers linger too long on the screen after they choose their candidate.

"Especially in a community with elderly citizens (they have) difficulty in (casting their) ballot," Lomax said. "Team leaders said there were complaints (and the) race filled in."

Lomax said voters need to have faith in the system.

"This election, I think, more than ever," he said. "The two sides are very fractured and each side is suspicious and we're caught in the middle."

Two straight polls: Angle 49, Reid 45 in Nevada
By: CNN Deputy Political Director Paul Steinhauser

(CNN) - With four days to go until the midterm elections, a second straight poll in the most high profile Senate battle in the country indicates Republican challenger Sharron Angle holds a four point advantage over Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

But Angle's four point margin in a new Mason-Dixon survey for the Las Vegas Review-Journal/8 News Now is within the poll's sampling error, making it a neck and neck race.

According to poll, 45 percent of likely voters in Nevada are backing Angle, who enjoys strong support from many in the Tea Party movement, with 45 percent backing Reid, the top Democrat in the Senate, who's bidding for a fifth term in the chamber.

Three percent of people questioned in the survey say they are undecided, with one percent saying they are backing other candidates on the ballot and two percent saying they will vote for none of the candidates, which is a ballot option in Nevada.

The Mason-Dixon poll's Friday release comes two days after a CNN/Time/Opinion Research survey indicated that Angle held the same 49 to 45 percent advantage over Reid. Two percent questioned in the CNN/Time poll supported Scott Ashjian, who is running as a Tea Party candidate, but who is shunned by many in the grassroots conservative movement, and three percent saying they are voting for none of the candidates listed. Angle's margin in the CNN poll is within that survey's sampling error.

Other surveys released in the past two weeks also indicate a small single digit margin for Angle.

According to the Mason-Dixon survey, Angle leads 85 to 8 percent among Republicans and 55 to 38 percent among independent voters, with Reid ahead 84 to 11 percent among Democrats.

"Reid just can't get much above 45 percent, and she's carrying the independents," Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker tells the Review-Journal. "I haven't seen a poll showing him up since the debate. That might have been when things started to lock in."

Reid and Angle faced off October 14 in their only debate.

According to the CNN/Time poll, Reid leads 96 to 3 percent among Democrats, with Angle leading 82 to 10 percent among Republicans and 53 to 38 percent among independent voters.

"Reid is doing best in Clark County, home not just to Las Vegas but to his hometown of Searchlight," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "He manages a virtual tie with Angle in her home territory in Washoe County, where Reno is located. But Reid is getting clobbered in the rest of the state, losing the rural areas of Nevada by more than three-to-one."

In a sign that enthusiasm for voting appears to be on the Republican side, when expanded from those likely to vote to the larger sample of all registered voters, Reid holds a 43 to 39 percent advantage over Angle, with five percent backing Ashjian and 12 percent saying they'll vote for none of the candidates.

President Barack Obama teamed up with Reid in Nevada last week. According to the poll, 39 percent of likely voters in Nevada approve of the job Obama's doing as president, with 59 percent saying they disapprove. Among all adults in the state, 44 percent approve of the job Obama's doing, with 49 percent disapproving of how he's handling his duties.

The Mason-Dixon poll indicates that 39 percent have a favorable opinion of Reid, with 56 percent saying they hold an unfavorable opinion. Likely voters are split on Angle, with 43 percent saying they have a favorable opinion of the former state lawmaker, with 45 percent saying they see her in an unfavorable light.

The survey's sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

The Mason-Dixon poll was conducted October 25-27, with 625 likely voters in Nevada questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

The CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted October 20-26, with 1,504 Nevada adults, including 1,286 registered voters and 773 likely voters questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points, with a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for likely voters.
