The electoral college serves an important function. It represents an equality for the sovereign states. This country is the United "states" and is a republic not a direct democracy. If the popular vote is all that counts then CA, TX, NY and FLA are the only states to be courted and their views and politics would dominate the nation...and NOBODY wants that on either side.
Why would WI, MT, AZ, CT or any other state choose to be a part of the confederation? This was understood when the founding fathers discussed the failures of the 'Articles of Confederation' specifically because Virginia and S. Carolina were in the position of being the most populous states and had been dictating policy to the others. They knew that without equal representation new states wouldn't join.
Population numbers and density ARE represented by one of the three branches of government (the House of Representatives) and they have 2 year term limits which was designed to reflect popular and changing sentiment on a quick response level. Equal representation of two Senators at 6 year limits was designed for more deliberative thought and reflection on law and policy. It's a braking mechanism to the house's quick reactive proposals.
The talk about dissolving the Electoral College is brought on by a rabid, authoritarian and communist-indoctrinated segment of the population that prefers the tyranny of direct democracy over the slow moving, Bill of Rights protecting, mechanization processes of our Constitution. These evil people are looking to capitalize on the energy, momentum and numbers of the young...before they grow up, wise up and start paying taxes.
The ends justify the means has NO place as a philosophy in the USA.
