Obama just keeps on kicking soul crusher's ass.....Gas prices are at their lowest level in over two decades...Americans are paying much much less for gas meaning more money in their pockets.....America is basically now self-sufficient in terms of oil and energy.....and gasoline prices are coming way down and are now under $2 on some places....amazing...
Obama was taking so much heat from the idiot conservatives on here who blamed him for high gasoline prices...so now I'm going to take the opportunity to give it right back and give him the credit for low gas prices.....
Its a shame that more people don't realize that Obama is a great president if you simply look at policy and results and not at all the far-right/Tea Party/FOX News propaganda 8)

there is no "truth"...I'm not biased....but many in the congress are....if you don't believe that then you are naive.......I really loved george Bush as president as well....his last two years were a mess but nevertheless I supported him....but the republicans in congress have been obstructionists.....he wanted to work with them on Obamacare but NOT ONE would work with him due to opressure being placed on them to toe the party line...what was he supposed to do?....I agree that the bill would have been a much better bill if the republicans had worked with him.....but if you're not part of the solution then you are part of the problem and things are going to be done without you

well first of all you basically agreed with everything I've been saying which may break your heart since you place more stock in opposing me even when I am right..As I stated above the bill would have been a better bill had the Republicans PARTICIPATED..they didn't..they voted en masse against it without a SINGLE vote for it....and so America got what was passed...A lopsided bill....doesn't mean however that ACA is a failure...we now have about 10 million more insured..which is awesome...

Obama has nothing to do with the US private sector oil boom - you might as well give him credit for Apple's success as well. He has in fact stopped US offshore drilling in the past, putting many middle class Americans out of work in the process.

yup he actually he has had a little impact on it but it has been a negative impact...his admin has basically made the red tape so long and complicated for new wells that a few corporations actually took him to court and won...it was determined that his admin was dragging its feet in regards to new applications.
Obama is very much anti oil and gas, fracking, drilling etc...He certainly has had an impact on oil production here in the states but again its been negative.
2thick is also correct that the recent drop in oil is more a result of OPECs decision and a downturn in demand from Asia and Europe as their economies slowdown.
Oil will likely be back up to around $90 a barrel by the end of next year...I bet that will be bush's fault though, right andre?

It's a case of 'either/or'. One can't conveniently choose when a POTUS has an impact on gas prices just because it supports your opposition partisan view. They either do or they don't. When it's high or it's cheap. One sided biased views is nothing more than a hypocrites stance.

Agreed on all counts. Federal drilling permits have been hard to come by in the last 6 years. The boom has been on private lands by private companies using their own $ and that of investors and lenders.
I'm not sure of many things, but I have virtually no doubt oil will eventually be well over $100 a barrel again sooner or later. What I don't know is how much lower it will go, how much longer it will take to turn upward again, and just how long it will be before it's $100 again. Oil at $150 a barrel and beyond is inevitable eventually.
One thing to watch out for with oil drillers and servicers is their debt levels in this current environment. Something like 30% of the junk bond market is from energy companies these days. If these companies start defaulting it will not only mean trouble for them, but also somewhat for investors and lending institutions as well.

no doubt my friend, we work in the same industry and I live in Houston so alot of our clients are energy company ceo's/execs. Trust we have been going crazy the last week trying to cover margin calls so its not just the companies that are levered heavily. The higher oil prices led to a premium on leases for a lot of the newer upstream companies. That was all good when oil was above $90 but now alot of those new smaller companies are going to run in the red especially for those with off shore exposure. I think there will be a small amount of defaults but oil will bounce back within 6 months - 1 year. If there is some sort of regional termoil in the middle east, russia, south america then possibly sooner.
This will basically shake out those smaller players and allow the larger players to become more efficient and develop better margins.

you know I watched a little bit of obamas meeting with the business round table this week. He made mention of how nobody likes to talk about how he has reduced the deficit and that any tax reform needs to make sure it that it doesnt reverse that.
What he fails to mention is that the majority of the deficit reduciton is a result of the sequester cuts that he opposed and blamed on the republicans.
you know what if you stopped and actually objectively looked at obama I bet your ass would be just as opposed to him and his antics as you are those "idiots" on this board.

Congress approved every one of those spending increases. The problem isn't dem or repub, it's the insane spending in washington in general.

Two of my favorite publicly traded MLPs in the energy space are Buckeye Partners and Kinder Morgan.
Ichan Enterprises (IEP) is also set up that way - I have had lots of money in that stock and have made a killing in that stock and also on following Ichan's other investments over the years. Of course he and Richard Kinder are just clueless schmucks in the world of getbig.com.. ;)
I've also had a lease agreement with a major oil company to drill on land I own for years - they pay me 20% plus an annual lease fee. Of course this income stream does tend to slow down during these times.

I did a fair amount of profit taking a couple of months ago - particularly in energy and some techs. Put options have also been a godsend on some of the more volatile companies.
I'm also looking at some of the debt that is starting to trade at a fraction of its face value that is not too far away from maturity. Not something I'm betting heavily on at this time though. Just a few bucks here and there. Rates will be going up eventually, and bonds will be going down then.
But it's always a good thing if I can get a number of different bonds trading at an average of 50% of par value with say 5 years or less to go to maturity - assuming that it's the typical scenario of the vast majority not defaulting. Basically a 15% a year (over 5 years) return plus interest on a bond trading @ 50% par with 5 years to maturity.
I grabbed a little Puerto Rican debt @ ~ 10% a while back, and just a nibble of Venezuelan debt @ 15% recently. Of course I'll be shocked if I get all of the interest plus my principal back on the latter. ;D

My point is, so the fuck what it went down 6 years into OB watch (referring to thread title). Its been high for 8 years. Additionally, if OB should get credit for the low gas prices, then he take blame for 6 years of high prices. We have had low gas prices for a month versus 72 months of high gas prices.
Only goes to show you that even a blind squirrel gets a nut every once in a while.
Don't worry yourself about it though.... it won't last.

yea we have more than a few clients with heavy concentrations in single company stock and with them being in the energy sector they have taken a decent hit over the last couple weeks. We are still dealing with margin calls as a result and trying to find ways to get more assets in or get better release rates.

I did a fair amount of profit taking a couple of months ago - particularly in energy and some techs. Put options have also been a godsend on some of the more volatile companies.
I'm also looking at some of the debt that is starting to trade at a fraction of its face value that is not too far away from maturity. Not something I'm betting heavily on at this time though. Just a few bucks here and there. Rates will be going up eventually, and bonds will be going down then.
But it's always a good thing if I can get a number of different bonds trading at an average of 50% of par value with say 5 years or less to go to maturity - assuming that it's the typical scenario of the vast majority not defaulting. Basically a 15% a year (over 5 years) return plus interest on a bond trading @ 50% par with 5 years to maturity.
I grabbed a little Puerto Rican debt @ ~ 10% a while back, and just a nibble of Venezuelan debt @ 15% recently. Of course I'll be shocked if I get all of the interest plus my principal back on the latter. ;D

we dont do a lot of bond trading but run a low duration fixed income portfolio with a portion allocated to an inflation linked fund. we also run a liquid alts portfolio to help give us fixed income like returns with low correlation.
I heard alot about those puerto rico bonds a while back but we never really considered mainly b/c of the default risk but I did hear there were good deals to be had.

My point is, so the fuck what it went down 6 years into OB watch (referring to thread title). Its been high for 8 years. Additionally, if OB should get credit for the low gas prices, then he take blame for 6 years of high prices. We have had low gas prices for a month versus 72 months of high gas prices.
Only goes to show you that even a blind squirrel gets a nut every once in a while.

Obama just keeps on kicking soul crusher's ass.....Gas prices are at their lowest level in over two decades...Americans are paying much much less for gas meaning more money in their pockets.....America is basically now self-sufficient in terms of oil and energy.....and gasoline prices are coming way down and are now under $2 on some places....amazing...
Obama was taking so much heat from the idiot conservatives on here who blamed him for high gasoline prices...so now I'm going to take the opportunity to give it right back and give him the credit for low gas prices.....
Its a shame that more people don't realize that Obama is a great president if you simply look at policy and results and not at all the far-right/Tea Party/FOX News propaganda 8)

I'm usually ideally ~ 3 to 1 on equities to bonds in my taxable accounts, with some commodities and cash and usually a bit of paper real estate. I've been more like 20 to 1 stocks to bonds in recent times with rates being so low and the constant banter of how rates have to go up one way or another eventually. But any time I can sqeeze out a little more alpha without a huge amount of risk and further diversify, I see it as a positive overall.
In addition to the aggressive allocation fund I spend most of my time actively managing & that is pretty much anything goes (long / short, growth / value, options, high-yield bonds, commodities, cash, real estate, offense / defense, shortterm / longterm, etc) I also run a pretty conservative income fund consisting mainly of investment grade corporates and munis, and a pretty moderately conservative fund specializing mainly in equity dividend income and value, and perhaps some higher yielding investment grade corps and munis. I haven't touched treasuries in years.
Most client money is in the latter 2 funds, and all of my money (other than retirement SEP / IRAs) is in the aggressive fund.
I was up big through Q3, but I've come pretty close to flattening out in the last couple of months. In addition to liberal use of put options, I do dollar cost average with my own money, which helps some when things get crazy.
My retirement accounts (mainly better-managed mutual funds managed by others) did quite well in ’13, when I had far too much $ in cash, commodities, and shorts in my taxable accounts / aggressive fund.

Biotech has really saved my arse this year, especially with energy falling out in the past couple of months - Gilead, InterMune, Isis Pharma, Cubist Pharma, Medivation, LaJolla, etc. And trading the ebola drug makers in the last couple of months - Tekmira, NewLink, Sarepta.
I have long owned a fair amount of Gilead, which is a very fundamentally sound company. But most others I tend to buy lightly (buy the rumor, "sell the news", etc) with puts for protection, or perhaps just buy puts AND calls with no actual stock position. Usually long range. They almost always move substantially either up or down on news on clinicals, FDA decisions, M&A, etc. Cubist just got a bid the other day, and I sold after owning it since 11/13.
