Fasting is not as stupid as some may think. It has been known to cure such things as allergies and in rare cases completely reverse cancer and other serious diseases. Some people have tons more energy after fasting and swear by it. I haven't tried it myself cause if I go without food for 5 hours or more I get dizzy & headaches.

Proof?

I've read quite a few Vegetarian & Vegan journals on the benefits of fasting and there are documented cases where people have reversed cancer by fasting for long periods and eating small amounts of raw vegetables & fruit. Curing allergies is very common from fasting. As I said, it's not for everyone and most of us would get very ill from it but it has worked for some.

Hear about that couple who killed their baby because they were vegan and would only feed the baby vegan food?

Not totally vegan..

I mean eating meat has been and always will be an important part of human history.

I'd still eat eggs and drink milk if I turned to that lifestyle... Strong emphasis on if.  ;)

They were an idiot couple who fed their baby nothing but soy milk and apple juice. No breast milk, no vegetables, no fruit, nothing else. There is nothing wrong with feeding a baby (or anyone) a vegan diet, provided a balance of non animal foods (plus a b12 supplement) is consumed regularly.

I've done several 4 day fasts and one 5 day fast.  It's good for the body and the mind...you find out some intersesting things...specifically about how different foods affect your attitude and personality.

I fasted for about four days on the colon cleansing diet (www.blessedherbs.com). Trust me when I tell you it DOES clean out some of the gunk inside your colon. The hardest part was reintroducing solid food. My stomach was doing regular backflips.

4 days 4 nights no food, no water. For Vision Quest, in Bug filled, eagle shitting, NW Minnesota.  after day 2, you piss the consistency of maple syrup and orange, if you crap, you crap out the stuff that never comes out...I didn't do it for any cutting thing, purely spiritual for me...and it took 4-5 days to eat solids again.

I know a bunch of people who have done that...but not for 4 days(3 is what I typically hear)-I'm surprised you made it without water that long.  Although, Tom Brown Jr. has done some wild ass stuff-lot's of Vision Quests in place like death Vally for instance.  I went to survival school with one of his students and teachers.

I concluded a 3-day fast last night.  Just water.  The first day sucked.  I had a raging head ache from not drinking coffee.  The 2nd and third day were easy.  I felt like I could have kept on going indefinitely.

I meditated 2hrs/day: 30 miutes in the morning, 30 minutes in the sauna at noon and 60 minutes at night.  It felt great physically, metally & spiritualy.  The meditation sessions were some of the best I have had.  I trained this morning and was surprised at how energetic and strong I felt.

I think I'll do this again once every few months...

I'd start with one day & then work yourself up to two or three. Just to see how your body reacts to it.

Every couple months I'll fast for a day or two.

Ha ha.  Adam, you're going to take credit for fasting!?  I've been doing the daily 12-hr fast for years.  In fact, while pre-contest dieting, I would fast for 15 hours.  And it was during that 15 hours that I would do cardio twice AND a balls-to-the-wall weight training session.

This 3-day fast had nothing to do with leaning out and everything to do with reaching a deeper meditative state and cleansing...

during the 9 hours of the day that I was not fasting, I was eating:

*12 whole eggs

the governments of the world think that we have to many humans walking the planet...And they are doing everything they can to bring those numbers down...Their is no doubt about it that our food sources are one way they are experimenting with getting the numbers down...

So fasting is a great thing for detoxing the chemicals that are being put into our bodies in most cases unknowingly...

Next time you meet someone dieing of cancer, ask them why they are told to eat all organic foods...

I once fasted for three days and felt great and full of energy on day three, but couldn't mentally go any longer - my stomach didn't feel hungry, but the cravings were constant and I finally gave in.

I had the flu and pneumonia a few months ago and literally didn't eat for two weeks and lost 20 pounds without even getting out of bed.

I occasionally don't eat all day just for the hell of it also.

How is your energy level and your sense of well being?

For those of you who do fast, did you lose much muscle while fasting?

No more so than if you restricted calories period.  You will lose some muscle, but a lot of fat comes off too.

Let's say I try a one day fast...is it better to do it from the middle of one day until the middle of the next (ex: 6:30 pm tonight until 6:30 pm tomorrow night) or would it be better to just do it from when I wake up until I go to sleep?

If you are only doing one day then start from when you wake up and don't eat all day, otherwise you could still stress out your digestive system by eating huge amounts of food on both days by eating a lot before and after - plus it seems like cheating.

I still can't get past the dip in the energy level.  Not to mention the horrendous bad breath.

Sounds like you are releasing toxins and that is the best reason to fast

i have done 7 day water only fasts twice. i wanted to last longer but was desperate for food, in the end the cravings got me.

first time i went off i went crazy and ate everything in sight, i was dying for 2 days with pains in my stomach, wind etc.

2nd time i went of it sensibly with apples. very nice.

i currently fast everyday too i eat at 8am and 8pm or later no more. its easy, and i wouldn't ever really call it a fast???

give it a chance...your body is used to frequent feedings, get acclimated to eating less and you will really lose some fat.

Who here has ever fasted?  How long?  Why?
Me, the "Diet Diva", as an experiment for IRONMAN.  I consumed only distilled water for 17 days, and lost 35 pounds in the process.  Felt like I'd also lost a
lung.  Began GENTLE training on Day 5, after my appetite had completely
vanished.  IT WAS THE BEST THING I EVER DID for myself.  I was like an alcoholic getting off the bottle. I learned not only about my relationship with food, but my
terribly undernourished ego.  BTW, I'm really glad you're exploring this topic because it's a very unpopular thing to do.  Very cult.  And there's no commercial interests driving it, so folks aren't hip to the benefits.

During my military days we'd fast, but not exactly volunarily......

Sometimes the chow reaches you and other times it doesn't.

Sometimes you don't want it even when it does.

Carb-depletion doesn't usually feel "good" until you hit ketosis (pale pink when
reading your Ketostix).  This is the "bad breath stage", after which you're high as a kite.  Training-wise, the wind had left my sails.  To conserve energy, all of my bodily systems were operating at half-power.  Yes, it's GOOD to get to know your body, Efirkey.  Heightened self-awareness can increase both self-appreciation and performance.  Deprivation has been one of my best teachers.  You don't know whatcha got til it's gone; and I didn't appreciate food until I went without.  Just as they do in two-thirds of the world.

Do you think your girl laughs with her friends about... you know, how you two get busy?  Do you think she digs it, or does she just do it because it amuses her to demean you, and then tell everyone about it?

If you ever get a girlfriend [a real one, not 'Lady of the Midnight Fortress' from World of Warcraft] maybe she'll do it to you!

I have fasted for three days before and felt great energy wise by the third and fourth day and my mind was very clear and my concentration was off the charts.

I never got to the stage were my lungs hurt though.  Which day was that?

I've been told that "jugged hare" involves skinning a rabbit, boiling it, sticking it in a jar, and burying it in the back yard for a couple months.  Then they dig it up, all nice and mushy and decomposed, and dip their crackers in it.  The English are bonkers.  :-X

in Thai "Pla Ra" translates litterly to Fish-rotten! :( :-X :'(

You ever uncork Fish emulsion fertalizer? THATS IT!!
They roll up vegies in it and eat it. (The poorer village PPl & some others that LIKE IT ::))

I didnt think my wife understood biology and explained "if you look under a microscope, you'd see it moving".
Her reply - "You dont need no microscope, get close and you can see it move w/ your eye. Touch the jar, it's warmer then the air!"
       Note: Air temp 100F+

Some of The poor dont have much to eat there. It'll spin your head what you see in a Northern market.
Lots of good stuff to though.

Giving your digestive system a complete rest is similar to taking a lay-off
from training.  It's a vacation of sorts: yr vacating the GI tract and giving
your metabolic processes A REST, while practising another discipline.

NOT recommended for anyone with ANYthing else to do
other than fast and rest.  Otherwise, you might use work/school/training/socializing--or any activity--as a reason to eat.  On my 17-day fast, I did
it all, but on my own time and at my own pace.  It's something you really
have to plan for.

For as long as I can remember I would fast during Ramadan, for 30 days from sunrise to sunset no food or water.  Few years back I could still train fine, but the last 2 years or so, its been a real hassle, last Ramadan I hardly trained.  I most likely will not be fasting this year and later, as it messes so much with my training and how I feel in general, and I'm dealing with some personal religious issues right now, so I dunno LOL  I'm over it!

Fasting is stupid!  ::) Especially if you're a bodybuilder!

Tell that to some of the old-school bodybuilders (i.e. Vince Gironda) who did that to help clean out and detox their systems.
