Since the Doors don't count (more a 60's band), I vote for the Stooges. But the question is hard to answer since the best rock bands weren't in America at this time. Never was a fan of the Eagles, Aerosmith, etc.

CCR for sure... sure they hit the scene in the late 60s but the 70s was THEIR time

there were so many great bands at that time its hard to pick just one. I will say though that everyone I knew had this particular album any you could hear this song on the radio just about everyday, almost 30 years later and it is still a great song.

I'll give the nod to the Eagles also for a few reasons. Longevity, I like the music ( hard to take this out of the equation), and sound quality in concert regardless of the venue. Be it indoor sports arenas or outdoors, they and the sound crew, somehow managed to make it sound album quality or very close. I cannot say this about most bands I've seen over the years.

Seen Slayer quite a few times and it's always hilarious to see them blow everybody else on the bill off the stage - and I don't go out of my way to listen to Slayer, either - but they are on another level in terms of quality of live show.
Seeing Sabbath in April or thereabouts next year. I'm a tiny bit skeptical given that whilst Ozzy seems to be able to sing in tune, he's sort of given up actually enunciating words so much.
I have seen Maiden but I don't get it. Not a diss on them or anything, I just haven't really ever heard enough of their music to like it. Enough people were digging it that my opinion of them shouldn't be considered.
Gunners would have been good in their prime, I've only seen Slash sans Axl and it was pretty decent.
Metallica played at a festival I was once at and it was probably the worst show I've ever been to in terms of deadshits :) - I didn't both watching them - went to the doof doof for something I cannot even remember.
Probably the biggest hard rock disappointment I've ever had was Robbeth Zombie - dude played a 45 minute set that included about an 8 minute guitar "solo" (noise) whilst he was off stage doing a costume change (in 45 minutes, remember) and even when he was on stage, he basically just danced around so much that he would only sing about half the lyrics to the song. Awful.
Most hard rock and metal bands have singers who cannot reproduce what they do on albums, live. It's probably the worst genre for that. The human voice just isn't built for screaming and singing. A lot of bands I have liked over the years have that problem. Strangest case of that not being so is Static X, that guy can do what he does on an album, live - it's pretty comical.

Great bands mentioned. I would add Judas Priest and Motorhead there among the greats, as well as Venom for their significance/influence.

If you don't consider them metal, I'd go with Iron Maiden.

Best hard rock/metal band of all time; based on what popularity, record sales, ticket sales? There are too many factors such as age, musical influence, and personal opinion to even debate this topic. Over the years, hard rock/metal bands have stood the test of time, sold millions of albums, and have created a solid fan base.
In no particular order:
Metal: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Motorhead, Judas Priest (No Homo)
Hard Rock: AC/DC, Motley Crue, Van Halen, KISS, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard

And, just to state it, I think ACDC fucking sucks outside of two songs.

If pressed, I go with Presence.
But saying Zeppelin had an under-rated album is like saying Wayne Gretzky had an under-rated season in the 80s.

Isn't Houses of the Holy on that album? I know it wasn't on the album named that, and thought it was Physical Grafitti. Anyway, lots of good music on that album. Probably the pinnacle, as Coda and In through the out Door were, ehh.

I saw Slayer in Boston as well (many years ago) Channel Club (now gone), what a great show...(Late 80's I believe)..

This. I've never been a particularly big Slayer fan, I really don't enjoy listening to their albums.... But man, the shows are incredible. And for some reason, I enjoy their songs live... Just not driving in a car. Never quiet figured that one out.

Good post but III has become a very revered album with time and a lot of people (actually a lot outside th realm of rock) consider it to be Zeppelin's best. Page's solo on "Since I've been Loving You" is one of the greatest solos ever. Presence is under-rated no doubt: "Tea For One", "Achille's Last Stand", "Nobody's Fault But Mine" are amongst Zep's greatest songs. "Royal Orleans","For Your Life", "Hots On For Nowhere": how many bands can sound that good honestly?
But other than "Presence", I'd say "Houses Of The Holy" is their most under-rated album: "The Rain Song" and "No Quarter" are in my top 5 Zeppelin tunes. "The Ocean", "Dancing days": if your feet are still listening to these, go see a neuro-surgeon. How many rock bands could play something like "The Crunge"?

Best Hard Rock Band: Tough call for me, but you have to give the nod to Led Zep.
While not the greatest of all time, one of the most under-rated bands is Rainbow.

serious, theyve been offered more than anyone to do one tour robert blant was offered 300 million just to do a reunion tour.
they concert they did in the o2 arena -20 million people tried to get tickets for that show.

both great bands....... having played bass for thirty years..... i'll go with Rush on the pure musicianship part of things..... Led Zep are no slouches .... great voice, guitar, bass and drums........ listened to both forever..... two different styles..... different fan base..... both a 10 on their respective scales....... my opinion.... I like the creativity both bass-wise, guitar-wise, drum-wise and lyric-wise.... so I've got no choice but to throw Rush my vote.......

Rush gets props for being a trio, but Led Zep is better. Also, a lot of people are saying they're totally different sounds and times. But, if you listen to Led I-IV, it has some of that "mystical" theme that Rush has. Kind of like a dungeons and dragons fan would dig the actual lyrics.

rush and yes sound alike......very similar.......led zeppelin had a completely different sound......both bands kicked ass!!!! both 10s in my book.

Zep was great for the 10 or so years they were a band. Pioneers of the huge drum sound on tape and other guitar and vocal recording trickery. Yes, they ripped off some blues songs but their versions had character and energy and they added some things like Indian flavored scales and mystical lyrics. Lots of anthemic tunes but no gas left in the tank by '80. Page's band The Firm and Plant's 80s solo stuff is pretty good but none of it would have worked being called Zep. Masters of marketing for not getting back together. Big Zep fan but tired of hearing Whole Lotta Love and the other more common songs on the radio....just burnt out on them.
Rush? Now at it over 40 years, can still play the old prog stuff and are still making good music. Huge body of work. More original musicianship, more nuanced and intricate playing style and it can't be said enough that their lyrical content is about 30 IQ points higher than Zep lyrics. Are they better as far as being legend? Nope.
I can guarantee you that they could play every Zep song though...Zep couldn't play 90% of Rush tunes...

Molly Hatchet to Lynyrd Skynyrd or Black Oak Arkansas... maybe a few more, except for the fact that Skynyrd were the pioneers of this sound and style. Gotta give em' extra credit for that.

I'm not a huge Zep fan but I do appreciate their history and the dent they made in the progression of rock n roll at its finest.
I think Kashmir is another good one. Jimmy Page is a genius regardless of what people say. Even the musicians who criticize him can't actually play his songs correctly.

Pretty good stuff. Jimmy did add the Harmonic minor scale (and variations therof) when nobody else (except maybe Ritchie Blackmoree) had even attempted to listen or learn something less traditional. The Immigrant Song/ "Hammer of the Gods" live displays some of Jimmy's real talent.
Also, Jimmy stole the Theramin from a band you would never guess. Many bands followed suit, but Jimmy made its use mystical.

Tommy Ramone, last of the Ramones, dies
Tommy Ramone, a co-founder of the seminal punk band the Ramones and the last surviving member of the original group, has died, a business associate said Saturday.
Dave Frey, who works for Ramones Productions and Silent Partner Management, confirmed that Ramone died on Friday. Frey didn't have additional details. Ramone was 65.
Tommy Ramone, a drummer, co-founded the Ramones in 1974 in New York along with singer Joey Ramone, bassist Dee Dee Ramone and guitarist Johnny Ramone. All four band members had different last names, but took the common name Ramone.
The band influenced a generation of rockers, and their hit songs "I Wanna Be Sedated," and "Blitzkrieg Bop," among others, earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
Clad in leather jackets and long black mops of hair, the group of motley misfits started out in legendary New York clubs like CBGB and Max's Kansas City, where they blasted their rapid-fire songs.
Since its debut album in 1976, the band struggled for commercial success, but they left a formidable imprint on the rock genre. Though they never had a Top 40 song, the Ramones influenced scores of followers, including bands such as Green Day and Nirvana.
Even Bruce Springsteen was moved. After seeing the Ramones in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Springsteen wrote "Hungry Heart" for the band. His manager, however, swayed him to keep the song for himself and it became a hit single.
The Ramones' best-known songs reflected their twisted teen years in Queens: "Beat on the Brat," ''Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue," ''Teenage Lobotomy," ''Sheena Is a Punk Rocker."
The Ramones disbanded in 1996 after a tour that followed their final studio album, "Adios Amigos." A live farewell tour album, "We're Outta Here!", was released in 1997.
Johnny Ramone, whose birth name was John Cummings, died in 2004 of prostate cancer. Joey Ramone, whose real name is Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Dee Dee Ramone, whose real name is Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002. Tommy Ramone was born Erdelyi Tamas in Budapest, Hungary.
