"Lower chest", do you hit it?
« on: April 06, 2009, 12:55:48 AM »
Do you hit lower chest in every workout? dips, decline bench etc....

all these years, my last exercise was always dips, decline bench, decline flies etc....but i haven't noticed any difference in my lower pecs.\

what do you think?

Im gonna skip hiting lower chest for a coupple workouts and instead add another flat exersice.

I always finish with dips.

Before all i really did was incline and flat movements, so my "lower pecs" weren't really focused on. Since adding heavy dips i'd say i have noticed a difference.
No doubt about it...

For chest I just bench, dip and incline db. Very small incline on the dbs though. I set the end of the bench on two 45lb plates.

Flip the order that you do things.

Start with dips and take it from there.

depends a lot on the angles and technique, dips may work tri's much more than chest depending on how wide your arms flare out. - for maximum pec involvment flare the arms out, don't have them narrow.

also as groink say's i'd start with decline, to see if it makes a difference.

that's right panda.. also when doing dips for chest i believe it’s better not to go down horizontally.. make your legs go backward when you dip..

I don't do declines as I don't feel them working my chest.

Wrong answer. keep your body in front of you to hit the chest, in back of you hits more tris

this is 100% true and cannot be argued  Groink approved ;D

where do you lower the bar to? i dont feel it in my chest when lowering it to my sternum area, but when i bring it down to the top of my pecs, close to my neck, then i really start to feel it in my chest...and make sure your pushing your chin down into neck/chest

I’ve never applied that technique to declines, but there’s a lot to be said about lowering the bar to the clavicular region for fiber recruitment.

Scott was big on doing flat bench smith presses to the neck with elbows flared for targeting upper pecs.
And I’ve seen a lot of guys apply the same principle to free weights for the same reasons.

never incorperated declines in my workouts, i have done heavy dips on shoulder or tricep days which i always felt hit them sufficiently for me.

Yep, when doing dips for chest, lean forward. That's why some people use chains around their necks for dips, as the weight makes them lean forward. A more upright position is better for tris.

Also, if starting with dips, make sure that you warm up very well. Dips are pretty rough on the shoulder girdle, so a proper warm up is essential.
No doubt about it...

no need to warm up if you do it as the final exercise.. with all my muscles i warm up before the first exercise only..

I said "if starting with dips" = doing dips for your 1st exercise, must warm up good.

If dips are your last exercise, like you said, no real need to warm up.

ok sorry i didn't notice.. yes you are right because some guys think dips itself can be considered just a warming up exercise which is not true..

That's right.

Great exercise, one of my favourites, but they can be rough. Warming up is essential.

sometimes i end my chest workout with supersets of dips followed by push ups.. it's hell!!.. also push ups separately is great if you do it as a final exercise..

I sometimes like to finish with a compound set of flat flyes and dips. Good finishing combo i think.....
