Do you know the odds of having your home broken into when you're there are? It's similar to padding up your Toyota, before driving around town. It's hard to imagine 1/3 of our country owns a gun. Really paranoid culture. I would aim to live in a better area, than worry about someone breaking in. Chances are you wouldn't be by your gun, as it would be. Unless you're a total nut and sleep with it loaded under your pillow or take it with you to the bathroom. The media is a good perpetrator of fear mongering. Look up the stats.
I guess anyone who watches the news has a warped perception of what it. You're taking all the isolated violence, rapes, etc and spewing them over and over at people. Look at the Orlando shooting. You'll hear about it for a month. The reality is, 50 people died in a country with 300 million. Hardly a big number for "extremists". The media does their job well.
