Why do American cars always have this look of trying too hard?

The design comes the Art & Science design theme...uniquely American, and sets it apart. Word is, that will change as the Chinese want "cutesy looking" Caddys. And let's not forget the Bangled BMWs---meant to be avant garde, but they haven't aged well...the Art&Science theme has....and over time has been refined...all share a Little bit of the Cadillac Sixteen in them---the lines, the egg-crate grille, the stance.
And i wouldn't say "American cars always have this look of trying too hard", many look downright boring.

i think when car companies, or any company for that matter has a design theme that is their look, and is not cookie cutter, that it should be applauded.

I wish I had my parent's light blue 57 Cadillac convertible today. I probably wouldn't drive it much because of the cost of the fuel, but it would still turn heads. Yeah, American cars are over-the-top sometimes.

That was the last Cadillac they owned. The had a moment of craziness when they bought a 58 Edsel. Then they went full out family car and bought a 59 Mercury Colony Park. I was a teenager barely old enough to drive and I hated driving this boat. After that my parents demurred to Lincolns with suicide doors. Needless to say, they were car crazy and car poor.

Car is already beating the new 3 series left and right hahaha caddy modeled this car after the old E46 platform bmw cause that platform was and is still considered to be the greatest sport luxury ever in terms or steering feel, handling, chassis and even looks :)

Saab was bought out by Caddy---Saabs,fwd 4 bangers, that later became diluted by GM, then died...and then the Chinese wanted to buy them and use the tech. GM blocked it, and let Saab die a slow death, but then Spyker tried to buy Saab, and couldn't...

Saabs and Caddys use diff  chassis platforms
Saabs use to be cool...especially the Viggen models.

We are not talking about sales numbers here..... Should have clarified
Typical euro car snob brand appeal.... And I like euros but all u guys are blinded by the badge I call it like it is.

Bmw isn't what it used to be... Worry about audi first

American sports/luxury not up to par hahaha "German engineering" big propaganda a little overrated

Ever heard of Z06, ZR-1, GT40, Vipers, even the gtr is beating the crap out of Germans in the ring.

I like euros a lot but the snob appeal and "overcompensating" attitude needs to stop

I know Parker can defend me if Americans wanted to they could wipe the floor with euros, remember the old fords back in the day beating the shit out of ferraris and Enzo was pissed. Haha

Lets not forget lemans where vettes dominated...

Tbh the only thing going for Germans/euros is the badge, to impress people and heavily overpriced!!

They should learn from the Japanese and improve reliability cause thier electronics suck!!

Maybe if lower line Porsche can build something as fun as a Toyota GT86 haha :D

Viper = shit ...if you know anything about them and their shitty v10 motors. The fact that you put them in the same line up as a z06 or zr1 super car means you're just a magazine flipping enthusiast.

All the cars you're comparing are upper class sports cars and this thread is about an entry level ATS.

...if you don't know the difference between German vs American engineering then you've never spent time in either type of vehicle. Go drive in a 911 for a while or a base German sedan and compare the fit, finish and feel to an american car and it's no contest.

Who gives a fuck about Ferraris? I said German engineering ...not Italian. I am not referring to super cars either.
LS small block chevy platform is to be respected, no doubt. But the vehicles it sits in are of lesser caliber than german counter parts.

On the Drive channel on youtube they talked about "german engineering" and the Americans...basically, the "American" engineers, "German" engineers all go to similar or the same schools and take the same classes and the American engineers are just as capable . The reason is the corporate culture. Germans want to flaunt the engineering prowess, whereas in the American car companies the ACCOUNTANTS reign supreme. Meaning, that they will ruin the party...even ex-executives have said that the Finance Depts of the Big Three ran the show and stopped alot of exciting cars from getting built, or had tech that was deemed too expensive to be taken out.

BMW's have great engineering? They always in the shop being repaired. Ever pay for a brake job on a Mecedes out of warranty at a dealer? Prepared to be raped.

Again ...go drive one and see what I mean.

...and only complete fucktards go for out of warranty repairs at dealers.

Hope this helps.

BMW's are almost over engineered to the point that there are way to many sub-systems that are constantly breaking. A friend of mine that graduated with me is working with high end exotics, Mercedes, BMW's, etc... Says the BMW's are a giant pain in the ass.

One of the newer cars has like 30 separate computer systems in the car, rather than running all the systems through a couple different computers like most manufacturers do. They may drive and feel nice, but that doesn't count for much when they're constantly in the shop, does it?
