Some of them actually are able to survive without being forced to do gay for pay because they chose women who would support them and who accepted the whole deal consciously or not... Most survive being personal trainers / gay or straight prostitution/  dealing drugs.

well, Phil was winning contests from the start, from his 2005 USA win to his two wins in 2006 as a rookie. Plus, his looks and his trademark arms...he had the lucky route. And Jay was the Golden Boy that they (mags) used to promote, plus his 2nd at the O to Ronnie, and his ASC wins, thus ensuring him contracts that were money.

Branch is an anomaly, he has won contests, as he has progressively gotten worse. And one can point to the shady under dealings of the bbing world. He is a head scratcher.  He also has his own business as well.
