Nopes, different recipe from what is commonly known as "ice cream" in the US.
BTW, gelato doesn't sound "fancy" in Europe at all. ;)

gelato is usually 3-4% fat, while ice cream is 16-18% fat

also gelato is semi-frozen compared to ice cream

I think that depends on if it's milk based or not. Fruit gelato has less fat than milk based gelato.

Wrong, and this topic was already addressed in this thread.

- Gelato is not the same as "ice cream",
- I'm not from the US and therefore this rule doesn't apply anyway.

growing up in the gelato business is kinda like growing up the son of a magician in the sense that how a magician's son doesn't care about the "oohs" and "aahs" of even the most amazing trick, I got sick of ice cream and also grew to disdain because of all the yellings i would get for not making it right

It's just heavenly! And it's a Kiwi dish, although it's quite popular in Australia too. You have to taste it to believe it.

Here are some pics I got off Google. It's served combined with different things like fresh fruit (mostly strawberries and cherries), ice cream etc. It's got a crusty outer layer (that's quite thin) and the filling basically has the taste and texture of cake icing.

If you can be bothered, you can buy it online and have it shipped to you - it is sold fresh as well as in boxes / packaging like biscuits.
