Title: Major League Bodybuilding
Post by: MattT on October 26, 2008, 11:39:28 PM
Just throwing an idea out there, but my other rant post got me thinking about how we could make bbing more mainstream or atleast give more access to the fans to watch more bbing shows.

So you would have bodybuilding leagues structured out by each state.

For example

FL vs TX

FL would hold a series of armature level shows or qualifying shows to qualify the top overall winners from each weight class to represent the state of FL on a national level.   TX would do the same thing along with all other states.  Then each bbing state team would compete against each other.  Winning teams would be determined by which team had the most winners during that state competition each team would be allotted 5 competitors per weight class to represent their states bodybuilding team.  So ie  FL  against TX and there was Bantam weight, middle weight, light weight, heavy weight, super heavy weight classes.  And FL won 4 out the 5 weight classes.  FL would then advance on etc.  This is the only way bbing can advance on, if we want bbing to be like the NFL, MLB, or NBA.  We have to start structuring are competitions like theirs.

No.

why not?, i know it can be structured better then what i just made up, but i think if it were implemented you would have strong competitiveness built up between competing states.

Bodybuilding will never be mainstream.  The only people that enjoy it are gays and meatheads and there aren't too many of them either, especially considering sometimes they are one in the same.

never say never, thats just like people said we'll never see a black man become the democratic nominee, well things can change over time.

If this were implemented now, 50 years down the road this could be a fairly huge thing.

Who want their kids to become bodybuilders? With all the drugs etc.... keep it for those who really want it. Dont push it on anybody - especially if it is promoted as almost drug-free... If bb is going to be promoted...tell the truth.... and bb will be even more marginal than it is today

An exhaustive competition like this is just too hard - bodybuilders would have to peak for each contest - it's too hard on the body. I would say 4 or 5 shows is really the max.

Good post.

Either way you go about it, bb'ing will never be mainstream.

Next to no-one would want to look like Cutler, and if you told them what is required to get even remotley close to that, they would be even more repulsed by this "sport"

Still, i like it though...

In order for your idea to work, the underlying "activity," i.e. bodybuilding, has to appeal to mainstream.  Since bb'ing will never appeal to mainstream, you can come up with endless variation on contests/competitions/tournaments/pageants and it will never be popular.

Seems like it would be like flushing money down the toilet. I can't picture the market actually supporting something like that.
