Those layoffs are for middle management and field supervisors. He's currently Vice President of North America - Retail, and as such not subject to termination or a severance package.

When I was laid off Alltel, my severance package was very good but I dont worry about that due to my business ventures.

Mistake. One of the worst things a mid manager can do is draw that line to where the subordinates get the feeling you are too good to hang with them. You don't have to be their buddy, but there is value in mingling with the employees at some point. You don't have to do it every day, but a couple times a week would do wonders for you and you can learn a lot by listening to the people who actually do the work,

Except literally zero managers do that. You're describing the dream boss all employees never get to have, rather than the typical one who sits in an office on their fat ass all day and only comes to talk to you when you messed up or they need something from you.

Has nothing to do with that.  I have a one hour lunch that I'd like to enjoy peace and quiet away from phones, email, etc.  Otherwise, I end up getting paperwork, emails,  or people approaching me for things.   Not only that, I can sit back and play some music, watch tv, etc.

Every day I have 2-3 guys that will venture into my office at lunch/break to hang out for a few minutes here and there.
