Tom Petty Dies at Santa Monica Hospital After Cardiac Arrest Sunday Night
The Santa Monica Observer ^ | October 2, 2017
Posted on 10/2/2017, 3:57:18 PM by
Tom Petty died Monday morning after life support was terminated, reports TMZ. The singer was found unconscious Sunday night after a massive cardiac arrest. Paramedics were able to restore a pulse, says TMZ, but his family accepted the inevitability of the singers death, and support was terminated this morning.
The Rock and Roller was known for his rhythmic Florida style. He was famous as early at 19. He transplanted himself to Southern California, where he was known for songs that celebrated Southern California living, such as "Free Falling."

I lived in Orlando from '79-'82. Tom would play local rock bars and Orlando Jai Alai. He would rock out everywhere he played no matter what the size was. Rock In Peace!

Sorry, when did Rolling Stone become the authority on what is and isn't good music? They have about as much credibility as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
P.S. RIP Tom. I don't think he's dead but given his condition, today or in the next few days, it's a foregone conclusion. :'(
-
This is my favorite Tom Petty song
Excellent.
Another:

Just shut the fuck up. He's made dozens of amazing songs. I literally have 3 CD's of greatest hits of his that I made for myself:

I saw him with The Heartbreakers around 18 years ago at Irving Plaza in NYC, a pretty small venue. This was one of the tunes for the Echo album at that time:

Still very much alive via reports from his daughter who went on a mad tear about Rolling Stone reporting it. Also the LAPD and other venues are apologizing for reporting his death. We'll have to see if this is a Piana type situation.
Glad he's alive, and hope he pulls through. This would've been the capper to a very shitty day if true.
-
A fucking legend. Sirius Radio has a Tom Petty station. And it's about fucking time because they also have a Grateful Dead and Pearl Jam station. These bands are mediocre and not near legendary status.
RIP.

Buried Treasure. It's not his music though, it's his music picks. Like it though, never knew how schooled he was in the blues.

RIP. Legend.

Sad day. Rock legend. Always used cool vintage gear too.
-
Charlie T. has gone to join Lefty and Nelson. This sucks. A superb guitarist and entertainer shot down by the years. Only two left.
I listen to his station on SiriusXm along with The Beatles Channel, Classic Vinyl and several others. Good stuff all 'round.

RIP.

Interesting guy, really stood up for himself despite risking everything a few times to show that, not like most celeb who only talk a good game but can't back it up..
check this out about him....
"As a songwriter, he focused often on daily struggles and the will to overcome them, most memorably on "Refugee," "Even the Losers" and "I Won't Back Down."
"It's sort of the classic theme of a lot of the work I've done," he told The Associated Press in 1989. "I think faith is very important just to get through life. I think it's really important that you believe in yourself, first of all. It's a very hard to thing to come by. But when you get it, it's invaluable."
Petty didn't just sing about not backing down, he lived it. In 1979, he was enraged when his record label was sold and his contract transferred. Stating that he would not be "bought and sold like a piece of meat," he self-financed what became "Damn the Torpedoes" and declared bankruptcy rather than allowing his label, MCA, to release it. He eventually reached a new deal with MCA, for better terms. In the early 1980s, he was again at war with MCA, this time over the label's plans to charge extra money, a dollar higher than the standard $8.98, for his album "Hard Promises." He again prevailed."

Rest in Peace Tom!

Tom Petty's daughter summed it up pretty well. Rolling Stone magazine is run by a bunch of poseurs.
-
Damn, I just saw this late last night.
First it was Greg Allman, now Tom Petty. They were both great artists but Petty's music spoke to the entire generation of us early 80s kids.

Quite the death stack... 3 types of fentanyl! Also note the use of 'doctors' plural - is it likely one physician would prescribe all of these? Or was Tom possibly shopping around...?
"Tom Petty's autopsy results are in, and they show the singer died from an accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications.
The L.A. County Coroner says a number of Tom's organs failed due to "mixed drug toxicity."
Tom's autopsy report shows the singer was on several pain meds, including Fentanyl patches, oxycodone (Oxycontin), temazepam (Restoril), alprazolam (Xanax), citalopram (Celexa), acetyl fentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl. The reason doctors prescribed the meds was because of a number of medical problems, including emphysema, knee problems and a fractured hip."

Ok. Killer. Guy's been giving pleasure to audiences since, whenever. He's a serious B-plus rock musician.OK. Saw him in concert - easily rose above his limitations. Never gonna be a Jimi, or a zepplin, but, boy, if they ever come 'round your way - see them. These guys can play, and they have fun.
-
had no idea the guy was dead

I wonder of this will be the cause of Dolores O'Riordan's death. She had back probs.
I have spine issues and you know better then to mix these death cocktails. They throw around "accidental" way too often.
I would say he was doing a little shopping or had a special doc friend.
-
Damn. That's a lot of prescriptions.
-

Totally agree about the use of the term 'accidental' - had a relative die under general anaesthetic, that was an accident. If I self-medicate with 3+ different types of opiods, fentanyl and benzos, is it really an accident? If it's really pain you're taking it for, get medical professionals involved, don't just "up the dose" for goodness sake...
I think (perhaps) what also might feed into this is if you have have the sort of career where you really don't have to get up every day to satisfy a boss - like a pop star - you can choose just to stay in bed or wander round your mansion and get f**ked up, so they do.
Damn. That's a lot of prescriptions.
Yep - you'd think in the age of the interwebz it would be simple for a doc to check online to make sure his patient isn't already being prescribed something by someone else that may suggest contraindications. Just trusting the patient to be honest seems fraught with dangerous possibilities...

There is no prescription for stupid. There's no cure for stupid. You just have to take control of yourself or lose everything as Petty did.
Bummer as I enjoyed much of his music.
-
I just hope he was saved.
-
I saw his last interview. He was asked about doing another tour. He said we will see, I have to get my hip surgery completed. Sounds like he was in pain for sure. Could be he took some forgot then took some more? I know he liked his weed not sure he was a junkie for any drugs, but who knows. Tom Petty music will live on, he was a talent for sure.

He had a heroin habit in the 70s/80s. Dangerous to take pain pills with that predisposition. The docs are stupid or star struck for giving him all that.
I worked with a woman that had scripts for tons of pills. Sales job... She would come to work and take a pill and forget and take more...by end of day she was slobbering on her desk.
I had to take her to hospital for a "random drug test" for her and "I" ....she had scripts for all of it so didn't get fired.
Yeah, yeah - Matt C/ESF post of peace...but true story.

im addicted to pussy

Regardless of fame or riches, people seem to need some type of crutch or vice to get through life.
I will never understand these weak-minded people who become drug dependents.
