Matt is always the number one guy mentioned but whenever this topic is brought up I think of Edgar Fletcher every time. I remember seeing his pics as a teen and not understanding how someone could look so awesome.

He did go Pro.  He won the Mr. Ultimate or some such crap in Nigeria against a bunch of poster models for Ethiopian hunger relief.  He was a shit-talker that NEVER would have turned pro in a legitimate show, so he took advantage of dual citizenship.  Vic Richards was a bitch.

I never understood why people thought he was even that big.  He really wasn`t.  He just had that Nigerian Blockhead and Block Bones Body which all Nigerians have.  Like that boxer Samuel Peter.

They all look like that.

Read any of his "interviews" on why he never competed...you think Kai Green rambles on about a lot of nothing?  He doesn't have SHIT on Vic Richards!

And at the end of the day, it was all a facade for the fact that his ego couldn't deal with the humiliating defeat he'd have tasted if he ever stepped onstage at either a National NPC or IFBB Pro show.  Like I said...a bitch.

i knew about one pro show he competed in.   he placed third and the prize money was ten grand.  he donated it to the amatuer bodybuilding federation to retain his amatuer status as he wanted to win the Mr. America.  he never did win it.

Titus is full of shit and, by now, probably his share of prison penis.

BUT, he's right about this.  The only reason Fletcher never turned Pro is the fact that he never dialed it in good enough to win a National level show.  Hell, today he'd turn Pro easily, what with the NPC giving away Pro Cards for not even winning one's class!

Vic was a big freak, no doubt.  I met him at the '95 O and he was like a walking monstrous eclipse.

But when it came to dieting, the only thing big about him was his pussy.

Exactly. He must've pissed someone off big time. To think that lumps of lizard turds like Kamali, Kovacs and Atwood stood on Pro stages whilst Fletcher never did is a travesty. Even without this thread to jog the memory, I still remember Fletcher to this day. Guy looked great.

He did look great. He just couldn't dial it in, when it mattered. He was the odds-on favorite to win the 1993 North American Championships (even with the magazines, hyping the return of Rory Leidmeyer, who dropped out of that show and flopped at the Nationals). But, Fletcher didn't quite nail it and ended up in 3rd place in the heavyweights, behind Stan McCrary and heavyweight (and overall champion), Dave Fisher.

Who took the overall that year? I'm under the impression that Stan turned Pro in 95.

Either way. It's a shame indeed that he couldn't pull it together when it mattered. All I know is that he looked freaky yet pleasing long before Photoshop was the norm.

That was Dave Fisher. McCrary was second that year. He was also second in '94 to Jeff Poulin, who won the overall and turned pro. 1995 was when McCrary finally won the heavyweight and overall title.

Man I remember all those names. Just been looking at placings over the years. Don Long, DeMayo, Curtis Leffer, Poulin, Mike Francios. Man, what an era. I'm going home in a few weeks and I think it's about time to dust off the old Flex and MuscleMag's. Just to remember why I still drag myself to gym 9pm on a Sunday night for leg training

I actually met Stan McCrary at the 2005 Southeaster USA in Orlando. He seemed pretty mellow, while hocking his "Topamania" gear. I think he was still with MuscleTech at the time. His girlfriend won the fitness show there. And the guest poser, Marcus Haley, still basking over his 2005 North American win and getting his pro card as a result.

I've never seen Fletcher in person. I've only read about him, recalling an article that stated he lived in Germany for over a decade.

If he was a citizen there, why didn't he try to win Germany's national title and turn pro via that route.

Much like Victor Richards went to Nigeria (although I know of no Nigerian national champion before or since Richards to turn pro), Jimmy Mentis used his dual citizenship and went to Greece to win its national title and earn a pro card. Unlike Richards, Mentis actually competed on an IFBB pro stage.
