well im going to go ahead and say it...i think it has a lot to do with heavy BARBELL benching

just a theory...but i can't think of any of the pros <90s doing really heavy dumbbells for bp...i might be wrong

A lot of it is to do with the posing. Now the side chest pose is still predominately the chest, but all the other visible muscles too are flexed, where as back then it was mostly just about showing off the chest, Also because most bb'ers in Arnies day did stomach vacuums when doing the side chest and had a big "rib box".

Ronnie never could do a proper side chest. He constantly dropped his shoulder. The side by side with Levrone proves it.

Dexter does a perfect side chest.

as with everything else genetic structure has a lot to do with it also,,some black guys will have no chest and amazing arms,,,some white guys will have amazing chests and average or no arms

Show me pictures of one guy who developed a good chest throught machine training..

The difference is so vast in every gym I have been too I have seldom seen anyone with a good chest. Only guy I can think of is my training partner and his chest is at least 4 inches thick! Guess what? He only does free weight presses for 1 hour and a half!

I would also like to add that heavy weight without proper form is counter productive. Hence Levrone's bird pecs.

The difference is that no one stretches their ribcage anymore...

When I started lifting everyone made an effort to do breathing pullovers and vacuums. It's very important because proper military posture and an expandable ribcage are the difference between a pretty ordinary physique and Herculean/Steeve Reeves proportions.
