I don't have a glamorous job. im a guy who fills in the gaps in society. there are people who make a difference like teachers doctors social workers etc then the rest of us hold jobs to keep the cogs that help society keep moving functioning. I fill that role. I could work at McDonald's, a gas station, or drive a taxi for all the identity and gratification my job brings. and I'm ok w that. that's my path.

that being said I'm very lucky to have the job I have. I'm goddamm blessed actually. I work 2-3 days a week. this summer I'll have worked 4 days since may 16 till I go back to work tomorrow. I have disposable income enough to travel a few times a year and maintain a comfortable life.

my job doesn't give me my identity nor a purpose greater than just being another tooth in the cog. and I don't need it to. :)

Great post.

The key is here, you are not comparing yourself to someone else/someone else's value system.

Where you are currently at works for you and you're getting what you want from it = win = a secure personality

Some schools want the MCAT, some the UKCAT

I am taking the UKCAT in 4 weeks time  :'( :'( :'(

I am dying to get into Kings College, love the location/history/quality of teaching there they want around 800/900 in the UKCAT for an interview BOOM

Just thought I would let my nearest and dearest bros know about a big career change I am embarking on.

At 29 years of age, I officially hate my job (well paid, but in finance in a shipping firm)

I literally drag myself to work, as the only incentive is paying my mortage and bills.

I've wanted to study medicine and become a General Practitioner since I was about 10, but decided to take a different course of study at 16 yo

It's now or never, I will be qualified at 35 and a G.P. at 38 (potentially 25-30 years in this career).

So as of this september I will be doing a 'foundation year' and then a 5 year MBBS

I saw this coming years ago it no longer enough for you to stare at buff men on your computer, so I am guessing that you will be servicing the bodybuilding community giving prostate exams with your finger to bodybuilders.

I wouldn't mind it if he was a tiny bit funny. It's like listening to a joke from someone with aspergers "It's raining cats and dogs outside, no it's not it's only water hahahahaha  ::)"

x2. Law degree was a complete waste of time. Hated every minute of it and have never used it. Wish I had done something that i was genuinely interested in.

I liked law and excelled at it, got to national final of moot trials and represented Uni internationally in debates (plus good grades etc). One thing that sucks is it is so specific. Firstly, I can only practise here with my professional qualification. Secondly, economics, science... these type of degrees confer useful skills for many different types of jobs, law less so.

That and to get the courts you have to traipse over heroin addicts, scumbags and human filth. It is in the worst area of Dublin.

Surely you can find an in somewhere other than criminal law?  Or is that one of those who you know things?

That's fantastic news. Seriously is, but who is going to pay your mortgage and bills while you do this? Medical school is more than a full time job.

I specialised in commercial law and torts (of which personal injury is a component). They only recently separated criminal and civil courts, but only by a few hundred metres. Just a shitty part of Dublin. One big reason is that because voters would complain about methodone treatment clinics in their own towns they just put them all in a small radius in the inner city. So everyday hundreds if not thousands of addicts bus in to that area, lie around shooting up, sell heroin, beg/harrass people, steal from shops etc.

Congrats! My friend just became a GP and is moving to a rural community as they do loan forgiveness is you work in buttfuck no where.

I'm upgrading and thinking of doing the same thing or going into pharmacy now that my wife's almost done her schooling. I imagine you've been doing lots of serious soul searching and noggin scratching, but I'm saying do it. You've already announced it here, so don't look back and move forward!!

All the best, bro!

Seeing as we* are living to our eighties and nineties, there's no reason why anyone shouldn't have the opportunity to try new things or switch careers. Good on you  :)

I will be working part time to fund my student fees (£8000 a year), the rest is moot since I have enough income from the Mrs part time to pay the mortgage, so will just be travelling fees.

At most I hope to have £20k debt after 8 years to take into account times of hardship etc.

during your first year and especially your second year of academics (med school), there's no way you'll be able to work and go to school and expect to pass. it's not like regular school.. if you fail one class in, you fail the entire year.. maybe you'll get lucky and apply to retest and maybe they'll approve it provided you work in the 'summer' on research projects or something.

my gf is in med school now and finishing her first year. her roommates are in their 2nd yr... so this is not something I'm ignorant of and just making shit up. lol

What is your under grad degree in?  And what the fuck is a foundation year?

"AMCAS and MCAT mean nothing to British medical schools. You apply through a central agency called UCAS: http://www.ucas.com which allows you four choices for medical school. It's best to train in a medical school in the country you intend to practice indefinitely. You'll face many issues if you go against the grain (speaking from experience). British medical schools will charge you close to what a private U.S. medical school asks for in tuition, and most of the programs that accept internationals are five years long. "

Have you been accepted into medical school yet?? That's a feat in itself.

First 2 years are the toughest, according to my good friend who is in his 2nd year of emergency medicine residency.

Sounds like you're not even doing it for the money as the motivating factor, which is commendable I suppose. But you will be well compensated if you go through with it and average bills won't be a big deal to deal with.

listen to your innermost conviction and follow your dream
Should Greg listen to his innermost "conviction"?  (Hint: it was for drugs).
