I've lived in this pretty nice apartment building for almost 5 years. ALL my neighbors are quiet and respectful. A little while ago, I started being woken up late at night, or early in the morning by a door being slammed shut really hard. I didn't know who was doing it. So, the next time it happened, I dashed for my front door and and went into the hall, to see this arab guy walking away from his apartment. He's diagonal from me. I wasn't going to shout out loud at him in the hallway, so, I wrote a note, telling him that I have been woken up several times to his slamming his front door shut. He wrote me back saying he wasn't aware and apologized for the inconvenience. Since then, he was quieter for a couple of days, but is back to slamming his door shut. It seems like this fucking guy doesn't sleep and I hear other people in there sometimes (he lives in a damn studio) and has no consideration for his neighbors. He's new to this building (The guy before him never did that). Not sure what to do at this point. Building management won't do shit, so that would be a waste of time going to them. I mean, how fucking hard is it to close a door (your damn front door) without smashing it closed every time? Suggestions?

I was just joking, ok seriously I would just try to talk to him nicely again. Also what exactly annoys/wakes you up? He still slams but you mentioned some friends he is having over and they are loud - seems like you not used to it since before it was quiet.
Well people move out new move in... I remeber when I was younger... I had new neighbor right next to me move in and he was ok first then he got the girl oh and I heard everything at night lol all her sex noises - it was funny cuz I would fuck my ex at that time and mines was loud as well and they would fuck too... Oh well :D
Anyways, just try to talk to him again say that it really breaks down your sleep and stuff and if he could just close the door nicely each time he exits.

Suggestions?
Buy a cat, a can of tuna, a bunch of explosives and a remote detonator. Strap the explosives to the cat and put the opened can of tuna near the door of the slammer. Set the cat loose, he'll head right for the tuna, when he gets there push the fucking button, bye bye to your sleeping problems. Hope this helps.

In 1990 I was poor and living in a shithole apartment building. I had this ugly chic living down stairs from me... drug addict, no job and on disability. Her loser friends would come over her place at least 2-3 times during the week nights... they stayed up until 4am making a huge amount of noise. I told her about it a few times, she apologized... but she did over and over again. The owner of the building was a slumlord and he didn't give a shit about anything except the rent. I used earplugs and even turned on a window AC and a fan trying to drown out the noise. It worked well enough for me to fall asleep, but it wasn't peaceful sleep because I kept waking up to loud noises during the night.
I got fed up and realized it was time to give her a dose of her own medicine. I had a cassette tape of a very annoying live Elvis show from the early 70's. My tape player was able to automatically flip the tape and play it over and over again. Right before I left in the morning I put the tape in, turned the stereo up to 10 and left for work at 8am. When I got home at 5pm she knocked on my door and said she was not able to sleep all day because of the Elvis music. I said: "now you know I feel when you're up all night making noise". I never heard any noise late at night ever again.

Nah, I don't hear his friends. He's not my next door neighbor. His apartment is diagonal to mine and unless I'm standing in the hall outside of his door, I hear NOTHING of what's happening inside his apartment, BUT, when he closes his front door, he slams it so loud that it echos in the entire hallway. Like someone dropping a bomb. My other 2 neighbors, all you hear is a key turning and a gentle closing of a door (NORMAL). He's just an inconsiderate piece of shit and like I said, I wrote him a note already and the shit's still going down. This ain't no cheap ass apartment either.

Not much you can do, he is an arab, and they don't care for other people, especially infidels. He probably enjoys TERRORISING you with his lack of consideration. Arabs take pride in being the biggest pricks they can be. Being a prick comes naturally to them.

Only way to know anything about this guy (whether he has a car, etc), would be to wait until he leave his apartment and follow him down to the garage to see. I know that on the weekend, there were 2 kids and 2 women singing and talking really loud in his apartment, because the fucker had his front door open for close to 1 hour. I think he has other arab friends who live in the building who come and visit him and who he visits (at all hours), but it's only HIM who slams his front door. He's not even like a punk 20 year old. Looks to be at least in his late 20's or 30's. I can't tell. He's an ugly mofo. All I know is if someone actually went out of their way to tell me I was slamming my door, it would NEVER be slammed again.

I was just taking the piss, but I know how infuriating shitty neighbours can be. Many years ago I lived in an enclave and was surrounded by several shitty neighbours, always partying all hours of the night, doing burnouts in the common driveway, leaving rubbish everywhere, all over my lawn, using my rubbish bin, their dogs would shit everywhere, the list of crappy lifestyle habits they imposed on others was countless. None of them worked and the worst thing was the constant music most nights until 4 and 5 am in the morning. I tried everything, being civil, speaking to them the next day asking them to stop, they always said they wouldn't do it again, only to get wasted and be at it two days later.
One night about 4 in the morning I was awoken by three drunken idiots screaming and yelling and rolling around my front lawn, when I went out to see what was going on and I told them to quieten down and go away they then threatened me and invited me to come outside to throw down (It seems I was being rude to request such civilised action). At the time I was on a pretty restricted diet and exercising intently, just the day before I had done a 50km bike road with minimal calories, so I was in no mood. As their was three of them, all drunk and all holding bottles, I told them if they didn't fuck off I had a baseball bat with their name on it. Well, one of the tough guys stepped forward and said, bring it on. So I stepped out of my doorway with the bat, walked up to him and struck him hard with the baseball bat on his right forearm.
Long story short he cried like a little bitch, his mates ran off and the police arrived and arrested me and I was charged. Turned out I broke his arm completely, I was happy about this and have no remorse whatsoever. I had a conviction recorded and paid a $500 fine, but I joke it was the best $500 I ever spent. Vigilante action gets a bad rap, it is incredibly satisfying to fuck these young punks up. True story :o

I tell you what though, I now appreciate my current mature and civil neighbours to no end. What a gift it is to have good neighbours. I live in Australia, and they place Government paid housing (called community housing) all over the place, they try and spread them out so they don't form ghettos, so even in nice neighbourhoods, your neighbour could be a drug dealing welfare bum partying and running amok all hours of the day and night. Turns out I got unlucky and although I was living in a reasonable neighbourhood, I ended up surrounded by a cluster of community housing, full of single mothers and their feral adult kids who being raised in the welfare system, thought nothing of exploiting it, committing crime and partying day and night. They pushed me to my limit, so I pushed back, I have NO REGRETS. Needless to say though, I moved shortly after, especially after the police told me some of my neighbours were deeply entrenched in the criminal underworld and some had very serious charges pending.

When I got out the RAF back around 1990 I was given a public apartment to rent and I bought it for £10,000 after 6 months. My time in the service gave me a great discount (thank's for something Maggie Thatcher). I got married and all was well and peaceful.
All was well for a few years until 1995 when a pair of noisy bastards moved in below. Young couple with loud stereo.
I went down to see them and asked them to play their music and come up to my place to hear it. They did and were "shocked" how loud it was and promised to keep it quiet.
Few weeks went by in peace and then they had a very loud party. My wife and I went to stay at my parents empty house for the night but the next morning at 7.30am we came back and I knocked on their door with my grandfathers sold oak Shillelagh. This is basically a heavy club and when they opened it, bleary eyed, I told them that if they ever made that noise again I would split their skulls with my weapon and they would be found maybe 30 years in the future in shallow graves.
We never heard a peep out of them again and we moved to a detached house within a year.
Sometimes you have to tell your neighbours which way is up!!

It would seem to me that you aren't the only tenant affected by his door slamming. Talk to your neighbors. Perhaps all three of you complaining to him or better yet to management will get something done.

We have a family of door slammers next door. I've explained them how annoying it is, and they apologised, but kept going on with slamming that door.
When I was over for something else I noticed you really need some force to close the door. There's an anti-draft strip screwed on, but it's way too bulky for this door. And it folds double in one corner, where it should not. Replacing that draft strip for a smaller one would do the trick. It would only cost a few euro's and a few minutes of time.
That was a few years back. Now, they wouldn't know a hammer from a screw driver, so they still haven't changed that strip. They did break their door lock a couple of times, because of all that slamming. But they rather keep on slamming their door and have a repairman over every few months to repair their door lock.

I wporked almost every weekend then and asked him nice if they could atleast turn down the stereo and stop bumping in the apartment. He didnt stop with it so one night i lay in my bed to 5 in the morning and glt madder and madder. So i went up to him with a big knife and only my boxers on and knocked on his door. Being rfull of tren, almost nude and a big knife was enough.didnt see him for 3months after that.......try that next time

Get one of those timer radios that can do it while you're at work... randomly blasting music at 90 dB, for 1 minute at a time, at intervals so they never fall back asleep. The only difference is, they'll probably be hungover and dying to sleep.

Me and my mrs worked hard, she worked saturdays and sundays too - so it was horrible for her not sleeping Fri and Sat nights then going to work. It made us miserable - so I had a quiet word after about two weeks of this, saying we've had enough, that we can even her what they are saying and I also mentioned it the land lord that I had a polite word with them.
No sooner did Thursday night come, the noise started again, Friday night was quiet - and then Saturday night had some sort of riot down there.
That Sunday morning, about 8am I nipped out in the car to my mates house, borrow a bass bin and his 400W slave amp - and I set up a Rennie Pilgrim DJ on loop from my CD player.
Some of the tracks he spins have basslines that literally you cannot hear but can see the furniture vibrating. I faced the bassbin down to the floor right above their beds - and I fired it up. The whole house shook - and then me and my mrs went to my mothers for Sunday lunch and I got back about 5 o'clock.

I've lived in this pretty nice apartment building for almost 5 years. ALL my neighbors are quiet and respectful. A little while ago, I started being woken up late at night, or early in the morning by a door being slammed shut really hard. I didn't know who was doing it. So, the next time it happened, I dashed for my front door and and went into the hall, to see this arab guy walking away from his apartment. He's diagonal from me. I wasn't going to shout out loud at him in the hallway, so, I wrote a note, telling him that I have been woken up several times to his slamming his front door shut. He wrote me back saying he wasn't aware and apologized for the inconvenience. Since then, he was quieter for a couple of days, but is back to slamming his door shut. It seems like this fucking guy doesn't sleep and I hear other people in there sometimes (he lives in a damn studio) and has no consideration for his neighbors. He's new to this building (The guy before him never did that). Not sure what to do at this point. Building management won't do shit, so that would be a waste of time going to them. I mean, how fucking hard is it to close a door (your damn front door) without smashing it closed every time? Suggestions?

When I rented a while back i had the wrong mail sent to me. I went to drop it off at the person's apartment and it was an indian dude, when he opened it there were something like 20 indians living in there. All dudes. 7 or so were playing cards, a few sleeping on matresses on the floor and a bunch watching TV. Pretty sure most couldn't qualify to rent an apartment on their own so one does it and lets the other 20 live there.

I work in RE Mgmt and deal with this all the time. Ironically, if you live in an apartment building, you're better off in a small apartment. In a large one, you're more likely to have a family living above you, and that means kids running around all day over your head.

Not sure what state you live in but write to your landlord/leasing office of the situation in a polite manner even though there seems to be a rock in the road. Tell them you've tried handling the situation in a calm and peaceable manner but to no resolve. Then specify in the letter that this letter serves as notice to them of the uninhabitable conditions as the noise has violated your right to quiet and enjoyment and interferes with your safety, health, and well being. Insert some stuff on your sleeping and how it interferes with your job.
Wait for response. Give 30 days. Send notice number 2. If keeps happening launch notice letter number 3. Notice 3, should state you will be vacating apartment at their expense and they have violated the lease agreement (habitability is implied for leases unless commercial).
Hopefully, they'll respond to you in some manner in writing, and then you can set them up to really pay for your moving expenses.....check you state's deceptive trade practices act.....you can also mention in the notice letter that managements actions of not helping is perceived as deceptive and misleading this will hint to them legal action...and that you relied to your detriment of their statements when you entered into the rent agreement. Did you rely to your detriment when you though management would help you with repairs and situations on the premise? (usually when you go to their website they have a complaint link, work order or while looking at apartment did they say something like, "management will make repairs.....help...etc."
Throw in you don't want to confront the person making noise again as you don't want to escalate the situation (law doesn't believe in tenant self-help). Also, creates liability situation on premises should the issue escalate to violence.
Some states if you have 3 noise complaints (police come out) you can automatically vacate premise and not be held liable. Kind of tough here cause a door is slamming and a noise complaint is a misdemeanor (requires officer to have witnessed) so if it was loud music would be better.

It has been at least 48 years since I've lived in an apartment. There was only one apartment where we had a slight noise problem. The apartments where actually townhouses. The unfortunate design aspect was that our stairs and our neighbor's stairs were on opposite sides of the common wall. They had small children who were on the stairs all the time. Sometimes it seemed as if a herd of elephants were going up or down the stairs. Overtime, we got used to it. It's part of apartment living.

What mentality does this person have that in a shared community its okay to play music that loud?

The ones I have met think you are being rude by confronting them about their anti-social behaviour. Many think nothing of playing music until 5 in the morning but think you rude if you tell them to shut the fucking music off.
