The NEW Sweetie Apple
« on: October 15, 2012, 11:50:00 AM »
OMG!!!!  These things are awesome!  Very crisp and very sweet.  Better than the honeycrisp since they're not so ginormous and a lot less expensive.  ($1.99/lb vs $3.49/lb)

Try the Sweetie (new variety available this year from WA), you won't be disappointed.

I thought you were against genetically manipulated food varieties?

You realize that this apple is the result of plant breeding,...which is genetic manipulation!

no need to GM apples for the specific reason you stated... they readily allow for selective breeding while other fruit do not... while this is genetic manipulation it simply mirrors a natural process...

Selective breeding is genetic manipulation...The outcome is an organism with a different genetic make up.

hmmm
did not know that  :o :-\

Will have to do some looking into that

Thanks for the heads up.

Looks like the "Arctic" apple is the one in question.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/13/business/growers-fret-over-a-new-apple-that-wont-turn-brown.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

After setting sights on creating a heavily modified apple that ‘never browns’ and doing their very best to hide the fact that they are indeed genetically altered, a biotech corporation known as Okanagan Specialty Fruits is now pushing for their new genetically modified apples to hit the market. The company recently submitted an application to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to launch their initiative to get the apples into your local grocery market and reap ‘improved industry sales’, but they made sure that the data was not available to the public.
