Togo footballers shot in ambush
Gunmen have fired on a bus carrying Togo's football team to the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, wounding players and reportedly killing the driver.
The attackers machine-gunned the vehicle after it crossed from the Republic of Congo into Angola's oil-rich territory of Cabinda.
Rebels who have been fighting for the region's independence later said they had carried out the attack.
The organisers of the tournament, which starts on Sunday, say it will go ahead.
The Angolan government called the incident an "act of terrorism".
The Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (Flec), which said it carried out the attack, has fought for independence for several decades, but entered a ceasefire in 2006.
In a statement quoted by Portugal's Lusa news agency, the group said: "This operation is only the start of a series of targeted actions that will continue in all the territory of Cabinda."
Togo is due to play its first cup game in Cabinda on Monday. The Confederation of African Football confirmed that the tournament would go ahead as planned, despite the violent attack.
Angolan Sports Minister Goncalves Muandumba said security for the competition would be stepped up to guarantee "all the conditions necessary for the success, tranquillity and security of the people and their belongings".
'Under shock'
Nine people, including at least two players, were wounded during the shooting, reports said. Central defender Serge Akakpo was among those hurt and back-up goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale was also reportedly injured.
Romanian side FC Vaslui confirmed that Mr Akakpo, who joined the club from French side Auxerre last year, was shot and badly injured in the attack. The 22-year-old was out of danger after being struck by two bullets and being treated by doctors, the club said.
The team's communications manager was among those seriously wounded in the shooting.
Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor was also on the bus but is unhurt. Speaking to the BBC, he described the incident as "one of the worst experiences of his life".
"I'm still under shock," Mr Adebayor said. "I was one of those who carried the injured players into the hospital - that is when I realised what was really going on. All the players, everyone was crying, calling their mums, crying on the phone, saying their last words because they thought they'd be dead."
The bus was travelling to Cabinda from the squad's training ground in the Republic of Congo when the shooting happened.
"This was an act of terrorism," Cabinda affairs minister Bento Bembe told Reuters news agency.
Football's highest governing body, Fifa, said it was troubled by the incident.
"Fifa and its president, Joseph S Blatter, are deeply moved by today's incidents which affected Togo's national team, to whom they express their utmost sympathy," the body said in a statement.
Competition officials said they had not known that the Togolose team had decided to drive directly to Cabinda.
They said they had expected the squad first to fly to the Angolan capital, Luanda, and from there to Cabinda.
Shot 'like dogs'
The head of the Togolese football federation told AFP news agency that the driver had died.
Togo striker Thomas Dossevi told France's RMC radio that several players were "in a bad state" after the attack.
"We were machine-gunned, like dogs," he said. "At the border with Angola - machine-gunned! I don't know why. I thought it was some rebels. We were under the seats of the bus for 20 minutes, trying to get away from the bullets."
The identities of those injured - who also included team staff - have not yet been confirmed.
Togo's first game in the tournament is due to be against Ghana on Monday.
But midfielder Alaixys Romao told RMC the team was likely to pull out of the 16-nation cup.
"No-one wants to play," he said. "We're not capable of it.
"We're thinking first of all about the health of our injured because there was a lot of blood on the ground."

I got a hunch Germany aren't gonna go far this year. Will likely make it out of the group, but I'd say quarters is about as far as they'll go. If they lose the first game vs. Portugal and the other match in the group doesn't end in a draw, it will be a close call already. Might just turn into a complete and utter disaster.
I know Germany doesn't exactly have a history of good outlooks on World Cups recently (2006: getting slaughtered by Italy during the WC prep and having to question Klinsmann's competence as a manager altogether, 2010: the supposedly single most important player, Michael Ballack, getting injured shortly before the tournament which was pretty much considered the MCA), they always pulled through, hell, even in 2002 they made it to the final with an utterly shitty team - but this year it looks especially dire:
- Lots of key players either are currently injured or have been for most of the season (Schweinsteiger, Neuer, Lahm, Khedira, Klose, Gündogan, the list could go on)
- If they're not injured, they're completely out of form with nothing but lackluster performances in recent games, see Özil the lazy Turk
- Defense is relying on Hummels and Boateng, both of which are solid most of the time but always good for random FUBARs
- Defensive midfield is totally fucked with Khedira out of form (long term injury), Schweinsteiger being injured right now and not exactly on top of his game, and Gündogan out Lahm could play DM (he did a few times at Bayern) but that would take our only consistently competent defender out of position with no substitute
- Only real striker is a then 36 year old Miroslav Klose who has been injured most of the season. Stuff like playing Götze or similar as a False 9 crashed and burned
As far as the winner goes, I'd say never rule out Spain. I'd say it's theirs to lose.

I actually would have picked Cameroon in this game if I knew it was being played. Cameroon players tend to sport great dreadlock hairstyles and the Mexican team all look greasy, like the team from Greece got caught in the rain.

I played rugby, way harsher injuries than 99% of sports but football is a cu nt for ankle injuries and getting taken out at full speed. My body is covered in scars and I've broken a lot of bones and torn a lot of tendons, ligaments and muscles but I know what hurts and a kick to the shin with the toes will have you limping for a while.
Not saying diving in football isn't farcical but if you had a clue (and eyes) Honduras were being filthy kicking the French players, hacking ankles and body checking them (doesn't hurt in football but stops you controlling ball).

I don't get test cricket, there is nuanced and there is nothing happening across the space of 5 days with breaks for lunch and tea. It gets good if there is a run chase or wickets need to be taken with limited time. Like watching a league develop over 5 days I guess.

I got a hunch Germany aren't gonna go far this year. Will likely make it out of the group, but I'd say quarters is about as far as they'll go. If they lose the first game vs. Portugal and the other match in the group doesn't end in a draw, it will be a close call already. Might just turn into a complete and utter disaster.
I know Germany doesn't exactly have a history of good outlooks on World Cups recently (2006: getting slaughtered by Italy during the WC prep and having to question Klinsmann's competence as a manager altogether, 2010: the supposedly single most important player, Michael Ballack, getting injured shortly before the tournament which was pretty much considered the MCA), they always pulled through, hell, even in 2002 they made it to the final with an utterly shitty team - but this year it looks especially dire:

If you're talking about injury time etc the ref stops his watch independent of what is shown on TV screens for stoppages such as injuries or unnecessary delays. It is a stupid system, that used in rugby is preferable.

Brazil 1986 still had a great team and was dominant in their game against France (being French, I'm not exactly partial to Brazil). Since then, that team is not as exciting but football fans always have higher expectations when it comes to Brazil. Belgium hasn't played well in the first round, their game against the US team was much better. Howard played an amazing game. Columbia I agree; 'til now, BY FAR, the most consistent and exciting team to watch. France only has a few real talents, nothing crazy about it (not even comparable to 2006): Griezmann is good, Pogba and Varane are extremely talented, Varane being much more consistent already. Benzema is a very good player but still not decisive when it's needed. The rest of the team is really so-so: expect Evra and Sakho to have a rough time against Germany, Cabaye is up-and-downs and doesn't play well under pressure, Valbuena is a poor man's Ribery and Olivier Giroud is only good to score headers. I'd like them to beat Germany but there's much more talent on the German side in fact.

Here's how I see the next set of games playing out.
Brazil vs Germany: Germany will win. Brazil lost Neymar to a lumbar fracture and Thiago Silva to a yellow card. While Brazil has a number of guys that can step up to replace the two, it hasn't been playing that well all throughout the world cup. Brazil looks lazy, unorganized and tired. They have been known to play beautiful soccer that could make any team look amateurish, but in this world cup, they have been sloppy. Germany, on the other hand, looks like a team of cyborgs playing soccer. They have strong defense and offense, move incredibly well down midfield and have answers for all plays. 1-0 Germany, followed by riots in the streets of Brazil.
Argentina vs Netherlands: Argentina will win. Both teams are very impressive. Netherlands has really good actors that after their run in soccer comes to an end could certainly pursue a career in the WWe with their magnificent dives and fake injuries. Argentina has Messi, who hasn't been playing as he usually would, but at least can attract 2-3 defenders at a time and set up subsequent plays. Argentina has very nice offence and defense and moves very much so in concert. 1-0 Argentina.

I agree that diving is shit, it didn't exist when I played as a child. I played rugby where even if you got creased or injured you got up and would never let on you got hurt because of pride and so the injury wouldn't be targeted.
However, when there is no technology to assist ref people use diving to either deceive referee or exaggerate contact as otherwise it could go unpunished. It is a competitive advantage and could be eliminated if they took retrospective action... but they don't.

Don't worry. We don't understand the point of it either. I think it was just created in order to make it more similar in set up to the Olympics - a chance for a 3rd place (bronze) finish. Most fans though think it should be scrapped given as no other tournament in soccer has it.
