Two things: all through history, wars have been fought in the name of religion. Yes you are right, everyone seems to have one disorder or another. You missed dysfunctional childhood. Almost every kid thinks their childhood was dysfunctional at some point....usually when they are teenagers. Unfortunately it seems as if the "teenage" years just keep getting longer and longer. Some folks never grow up.
many times, people have hijacked "religion" and used it as an excuse to fight a war. It's funny how each side claims that they are fighting for "good" and the other side is "evil". Christians called the Muslims that they fought "heathens" and the Indians that they fought "savages". Muslims thought the Christians were infidels, and the Egyptians thought that the Jews were less than human...
In these instances, it is not really the "religion" that was the problem, but it was used to further goals of taking, retaking lands, or struggling against slavery, or maintaining control. Especially with the Egyptians where the leadership/politician was deified, and with Jews there was a separation between church and state. Religion is like a tool---you can use a hammer to bang a nail, or you can use it to kill someone. Same thing for religion. If it is not one one it's another...religion is oftentimes the scapegoat for people. When you look behind the proverbial curtain, it is often the person(s) with more sinister desires who uses religion to achieve their own personal goals or vendettas.
