(REUTERS) – Republican Donald Trump is pulling away from the pack in the race for the party’s U.S. presidential nomination, widening his lead over his closest rivals in the past week, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Friday.

Republican voters show no signs they are growing weary of the brash real estate mogul, who has dominated political headlines and the 17-strong Republican presidential field with his tough talk about immigration and insults directed at his political rivals. The candidates are vying to be nominated to represent their party in the November 2016 general election.

Nearly 32 percent of Republicans surveyed online said they backed Trump, up from 24 percent a week earlier, the opinion poll found. Trump had nearly double the support of his closest competitor, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who got 16 percent. Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson was third at 8 percent.

Even when Trump was pitted directly in the poll against just his top two competitors, 44 percent backed him. Bush won about 29 percent of respondents, and Carson 25 percent.

He's just basically saying things that people have long wanted politicians to talk about......he doesn't really have an answer but he at least pits it all out there.....and people like that......I have to admit that he is kinda winning me over somewhat..as is Bernie Sanders because he too is doing the same thing

People are tired of politicians being overly measured in their responses.

Both of those 2 guys simply don't give a damn.

Agreed........and its really driving the other guys nuts....they are not used to responding to pointed questions concerning issues they are not comfortable talking about...Hence Jeb's gaffe at using the "anchor baby" term......Trump can get away with that...Bush can't

Yep.

Perfect example right here.

Reporters constantly try to use the pc or shaming angle to have power over who they are interviewing and Donald Trump simply takes that away and shoves it right back into their face. People love stuff like that.

Just from this simple, basic response he destroys any sort of leverage the man asking the question has.

Assuming Trump wins - something that everyone thought the GOP base was too smart to let happen...

How will hispanics vote?  A repub NEEDS 40% of the hispanic vote to win this election, right?  How does Trump get that?   I guess the safe answer is, "he won't get much hispanic, but so many dems will cross over to vote Trump due to celebrity and anti-immigrant".

I gotta say, it reminds me of other leaders who blamed a group of people for all of the country's problems - Trump hasn't bitched about insane military spending (he wants to grow it).  He hasn't bitched about entitlements, orpork spending, or bloated govt or insane taxes and tax breaks for the wealthy.

He's reaching into the economically illiterate, making them hate PEOPLE, something tangible: illegals.

Trump will get into office, and do a lot of socialist/democrat things, and repub base voters are going to be shocked.

This is such a bizarre situation. The base's modern habit of getting behind the biggest, loudest jackhole is creating this weird perfect storm of a terrible candidate who clearly does not really want the job being propelled forward on the exhaust of his own indifference. It's like an Adam Sandler comedy or something.  One of NYC's biggest welfare queens is gonna take care of the "illegal immigrant problem".

you're 100% correct.   They're marrying the crazy klepto GF with a gambling problem, crazy ex's, and a funky undercarriage, because she gives great BJs.

Looking past his liberal life, and worse - the fact he won't even commit to conservative positions on the issues in 2015 lol - because they really like his stance on ONE issue.

"I'm going to tax your asses back to 1978, give welfare to everyone, personally perform abortions, and take away some of your guns... but by golly, I'll kick out those brown people you hate so much!"   *tea party stands and appluads*

Nice. Fuck political-correctness. No wonder he is ahead, the other idiots have spin-doctors telling them what to say, and therefore comes across fake.
Not the case with Trump.

Some people on here have a hard time grasping why Trump is so popular but a big portion of it can be summed up by that exact phrase.

Fuck political correctness.

It's not even that! Andreisdaman started a thread about how Trump is right on the issue, but he spent the whole thread agreeing with everyone who made points about how everything he's said in regards to policy is unfeasible. What is he right about? He has one issue that he hasn't even spent anytime working out the logistics of.

This is like high school, where there'd be this one kid who knew that the easiest way to be popular was just  be mean to the weaker kids and call attention to himself during class. Didn't need to do anything else.

Honestly, I couldn't be less invested in whether he wins or not. I don't want it to happen, but I think there are enough people who are willing to just fill in the blanks and let it happen. Enough people who are confusing his asinine rhetoric with being a straight-shooter and "politically incorrect." Like it or not, political correctness isn't just a random pejorative.  Some people can be ott about it, but political correctness is symptomatic of someone who navigates the world thoughtfully and diplomatically, a quality that is necessary for anyone who wants to be effective in a democratic government. Even in the course of this very short campaign cycle, he has shown that when dealing with adversaries he is dishonest and behaves in a manner only meant to protect his ego  in the press.

::)

::) It's true. Already, the only thing he has close to spelled-out policy is not even possible to implement. If he makes it to office, what will he be able to accomplish without  even his own party behind him?  Bombastic bloviating can trick some people into voting for him, but anyone with even a shred of common sense knows that he won't be able to work that way in office.

I do Agree that Trump has a point on the issue and that his statements did resonate with me.....I do think we have people who purposely come here to have children so that they can be American citizens and therefore the children qualify for all sorts of financial aid....I agree with him on the issue but I also see he is wrong on the  solution....NO WAY will he be able to build a wall...NO WAY will he be able to deport all the illegals....it would bankrupt us as a country.....in order to build a wall you would have to build it over land that is mountainous, unstable, over rivers and streams, and also would have to purchase large swaths of land from ranchers who already own the land.......NOT HAPPENING!

So, this is where I'm confused. You say he's winning you over and he's just saying what everyone is thinking (he's not), but is that really good enough? A politician acknowledging what he considers a problem without any real possibility of solving it is persuasive?I Based on what he's actually said during his campaigning, he doesn't have any real plans to solve any problems. If he were to follow through on his key issue, it would create more problems than it would solve.

dude, you're massively correct here.  Trump's wall would cost hundreds of billions, would stomp all over people's lands.  His "round up 6 or 7 % of the population and 7.5% of new babies born and send them to a nation that doesn't want them" could lead to HUGE diplomatic and humanitarian mess, with thousands dying of disease in the desert.  There would have to be a massive, high tech 'underground railroad' with illegals and Dream babies.

what I'm saying is that I acknowledge that Trump's message is very very attractive because he talks  about issues that people ARE thinking about but regular politicians have steered clear of......and even though I may not agree with building a wall, Trump BELIEVES that this is the solution...at least he's been very forward with this,.,...he doesn't leave things to the imagination which is whats attractive to voters.....I like that he calls things what he perceives them to be,,,,and I really ,love how he calls out other politicians for what they are as well.....there is too much politeness in politics

LOL so  absolute faith in lousy ideas is the new "good idea"? Being a blowhard who calls it like he sees it is an admirable quality even when it's coming from a jackass who always sees it wrong?

trump is not WRONG when he says we need to get a better handle on our b order and a better handle on how many people are coming here and who they are...he's not wrong that we have to stop illegals from coming here..and he is definitely right that Mexico is letting people come here ON PURPOSE because it eases economic pressure on them......of course he's a blowhard.....but he's talking about issues that need to be talked about and the other politicians are not addressing.

The illegal immigrant population is  at it's lowest rate in the last 20 years. Illegal immigration from Mexico has declined every year since 2000. According to some measures, deportation levels have risen every year of Obama's presidency. This is not some underground issue that only Trump is brave enough to talk about.  He's just the only one foolish enough to put forward imaginary solutions.

I agree with your analysis.....But that doesn't mean that illegal immigariuon still should be tolerated.....Obama has done an awesome job of deporting illegals......but you still can't turn your back on the problem.....The genius with Trump is that yes what he says is simplistic, but he NEVER deviates from his message and he NEVER lets the newspeople make him change his mind due to pressured questioning.....and people admire that....

I'm just separating the message from the solutions which I admit are either wrong or non-existent  ..I am from NY so I understand Trump.....so I have more of a tolerance for his pronouncements because I already know they are mostly bravado..unfortunately the people outside NY don't know this

Yeah he just has that loud, abrasive no nonsense New York attitude that can rub some people the wrong way but I don't think it is coming from a really mean or angry place. It's just the way alot of people are up there.

Agreed X2......he simply believes that if someone hits out at you, you then hit him back twice as hard and right away.....which is why he dangerous to fuck with....he has no qualms about calling you out and attacking you where it hurts...like his classic line about John McCain...."he's only a hero because he was captured....I like people who weren't captured".....OUCH!!!....basically saying that McCain has been living off his POW war record (true) and as Trump pointed out "has done NOTHING for veterans"...which is true..all McCain has done in the last 7 years is go on TV and talk about Obama

Also notice that since Trump called him out, McCain has maintained a lower profile than Jimmy Hoffa

Not to mention, if you are smart enough, the average American voter is capable of discerning what is right and wroing about Trump's statements....like when he says that "Hillary Clinton is the worse Secretary of State in history"...I roll my eyes
