Approximately 17,343 people a year are hospitalized for esophageal tears from unchewed meat. 13% of these cases lead to death. The average weight loss after a week long hospital stay is 91 pounds. Doctors fear that ER's will see a significant increase  of these cases because of the extreme weight loss numbers.
