Drop sets, rest-pause, HIT, power sets, speed sets, low reps, moderate reps, high reps, dumbbell presses, barbell presses, incline, flat, decline, pre-exhaust, pushups, extended rest, relentless training, i have tried it all....
and STILL 225 for 4 is all i get on the bench press. what the fuck?
dumbbells i can get 95 for 8, which im pretty happy with. does this dumbbell press equate to my barbell? or does my barbell seem as though it should be higher based on my dumbbell presses?
-
Gain 15 pounds.
You will be benching 250 for 5 reps.
-
or use a gun to solve your problems...
shot those doing more than you :)
-
Hang in there bro.
It took me a good long time to hit 600 raw, but with lots of training and I'm not gonna lie a little dabbling in the roids, i was hitting 315 for 12 reps when i was 18.
Keep hitting it hard and before you know it you will be benching with the big boys like me :)

Change up your chest workout.

do a cycle of test e and you will add more to your bench guaranteed but when you come off it will go back to 225.
do you dare cross to the darkside where all of your fantasies come to life 8)

bench press once a week, good warmup then 3-4 sets 3-6 reps. this is it.
do heavy close grip presses 2-3 days later, 3 sets 4-6 reps.
good luck.

Are you trying to grow or just see a bigger number on the bar?

I suggest taking a break from barbell and hit dumbbells hard... Also work on strengthening your front delts, tris etc...
Also, do not overlook the real basic chest movements like pushups and dips, they are great.

If you're training to get big don't sweat it.
If you're training for a big bench, then benching is not the answer.
Check out the P/L board. Lots of solid advice.

Heavy dips gave my bench a boost pretty quickly.

So, who cares about strength? Size bro, size! :)

I'm assuming you probably bench first in your workout since this seems to be your priority on chest day. A lot of times people become stagnant in the bench press b/c the shoulders and triceps try to take on the brunt of the work in the lift. I had the same problem recently. I suggest you start chest day off with dumbbell flyes to pre-fatigue the chest and then move on or even superset with bench presses for a good 6 reps. You'll obviously have to drop the ego and lower the weight and concentrate on the eccentric part of the movement, keeping your form very tight and consciously squeezing your pecs throughout the movement. You could then move to Incline DB Flyes followed by Incline presses. Try this for a good 4-6 weeks and your bench should be up again.

I agree with this..I am stuck also at 275 for 5 reps and 285 for one rep...I am trying my best to get to 315 (without roids) ....so I am just working on strengthening my triceps biceps and sholders as well as my back which is more important than you think...strengthen the other stuff and the press will get better eventually....I hope ;D
-
thanks for the solid advice guys. ive had increases on various shoulder and tricep exercises with NO increase on bench. it seems destined to stay where it's at. but im gonna keep going strong. i will focus on pre-exhaust the next few workouts and see if that helps.

you do 5 reps with 275 and only one with 285 ??? wtf you are suppose to do around 300

Different people have different strength curves. If I put an extra 20lbs on my 8RM, I can barely get a rep.

no, a weight he can lift for a couple of reps, low, about 4 or so
and a good tip would be to never do wide grip flat bench presses
too dangerous, high risk of pec tear, do a power lifter like grip, close grip benches
i would say do inclines with normal grip, i have never heard of any one tearing their pec on the incline
i hope this comment saves a pec or two :)

Dude just have some super hot chick spot you on bench, you'll lift more. If not it means you're teh gay.

try every bench workout to do one more rep than the previous, or just put 5 lbs more on the bar to rep out 3/4 reps, work your way up slowely, concentrate on weight forget about dropsets and such for bench, better yet, eliminate flat bench, the chest grows from inclines.

GetBig never ceases to amaze me..a guy gets on here asking for help with his bench and the only advice some of you guys can give is "lift harder pussy".....
maybe some of your problem is psychological....some people are secretly afraid to get under that weight and load it up because they are secretly afraid they will fail under the bar and get hurt or embarrassed...
I had that problem for a while...I wasn't willing to go over 135 for the longest because I was afraid but didn't realize it...one day I just decided to load up the bar and increase my weight no matter what happens....
after being stuck for a while at 135 I went to 185 in one day.....that was about two years ago....now I am at 275-285....hoping to get to 315.....I work without a spotter so I know if I had a spotter then I would be at 315 by now, but I am trying to do it on my own without a spotter...just my ego..
I admit I still get a litle scared under the bar....but you must push yourself psychologically or you won't be able to do it....contrary to what most of the guys on here say, there are VERY VERY few people (naturals) who can bench 315....I have only seen two people in my gym do it and I have been a member for four years...

Mesomorph is a natural and he can rep 315 for an easy ten then hit 405 for one but really could get two. ::)

1. work on the techinque
2 stop benching
3 start eating and eventually a cycle ( maybe thatțs all you can naturally do...although I highly doubt it )
4 start training your triceps ( bench is 1/2 tricep, 1/4 front delt,1/4 chest ... aproximately )
5 ask wolfie questions about it ( hețs the best pro bencher posting on getbig )
6 stop jacking off to buff guys ( it psyches you out aparently :D )

Find your sticking point. Get some boards and work on pressing from that point. Definitely try this

you are so quick to criticize that you missed my point....yes I admit there was some fear and still is because I don't want to get hurt...like having the bar be too heavy for me and landing on my throat.....but I have been able to work up to 285 by pushing myself.......I think 285 is good weight for a nattie....
and no I do not train at curves..thanks for the sarcasm....I train at a hardcore neighborhood gym and regardless what all the supposed superlifters on here say, it is very difficult as a natural to get to benching 6 big plates (315 lbs).....takes lots and lots of work..especially if you do not work with a spotter and work out alone like I do....
the vast majority of guys on here cannot bench 315 and never will.....if that were easy to attain then everyone in the gym would be able to do so....most make it up to about 225 (4 plates) and can't or won't go any further
-

I weigh 240 asshead
If i couldn't knock out 315 for at least a few reps i would shoot myself for being a pussy.
Which is something you might want to look into :D

Yeah dude, bench is the hardest area to improve for me too. Seems like my squat and dead always go up but bench stagnates frequently. I have a theory that that kind of strength is expendable and least important to the body in terms of survival, so you got to take unprecedented measures to improve it. My advice to you is to stop doing all exercises that don't involve the chest/tri/delts for at least a month and just focus on this lift - in other words prioritize. Anything ur doing hard (i.e squats and deads) rob your limited energy/recovery resources.
...does this dumbbell press equate to my barbell? or does my barbell seem as though it should be higher based on my dumbbell presses?
In my experiences, carry over strength is marginal. You gotta practice the lift to be good at it. It's a CNS thing.

why dont you have a spotter? how are you going to push yourself and work up to anything without a spotter?
when you're doing something like trying to increase your bench.. its best to do it with a group of guys.. for motivation and practical reasons (like a spot)
you will make much faster progress that way.
and I benched 315.. naturally. so.. stop being a fucking girl. although you could simply be on the weaker side..

Even hard gainers should manage 300 at the peak of their training imo

Groink in this thread= ;D

I think you may have touched on something here
yes.. but I actually think heavy weights are not necessary for adding mass... small progressive increases in weight yes.. but working for a heavy bench is pretty pointless for a bodybuilder.
just to say I benched such and such weight... its an ego thing and its stupid.
I believe its all about the contraction.. increasing resistance slowly over time and really feeling the target muscle contract... is effectivly done with a lighter load.
going lighter.. it will build mass and your joints will thank you later.
but this guy is simply worried about what people think.. he should work on that issue.. not his bench.
-
this isnt a training issue, no deal..... the reason why yoru not getting stronger and bigger have been outlined by yourself in previous posts... YOU DONT EAT! and you dont "believe" in eating protein either..... so heres a suggestion...start eating a big portion of meat and a big portion of carbs and do it several times daily.
-

agree with everything you said.
I find that the vast majority of dudes can't help but fall into ego training when it comes to chest. the lure of the "big bench"
-
Ffs train in a power rack with safety bars if you're lifting alone. Google, download, and read Starting Strength. Set aside some $ for time with a lifting coach if no one has ever advised you on form, warmup, injury prevention, your specific problem areas, stretching and flexibility, etc, not just some faggy rep counter but someone who knows their shit and has the crediantials and CV to back up their claims.

i am satisfied with my other lifts... its not my strength in general that disappoints me, just barbell bench press!
-
Simple. . . . . . . . Just get some fake plates and you'll be doing 405 in no time!!!!!!!!!!!!. . . . . . . Nothing impressess more than a youtube video of someone pushing up heavy weight like they could throw the whole damn bar through the ceiling!!!

Have one day dedicated to speed.Take 50-60% of your max bench and do 9 setsX3 reps. These reps should be as fast and as explosive as possible. The plates should be banging at the top.Follow that up with 4 board press with a close grip 5 sets of 5 reps heavy[last set get a max of 5 4 is ok],3 sets pushdowns.
Then have another day where your doing MAX singles on a two board press,3 board press, rack lockouts, floor press, bench with chains, bench with bands etc. you pick the one, work up to a max single. It must be an absolute max.Folow that up with a 5 board bench for 5 setsX5 reps and dumbell presses for three sets and as many reps as you can get.
Test your max in 6 weeks or max for 5 reps or whatever your shooting for.

Correct.

Use chains. Go to HD and buy some heavy ass chains and hang them on the edge. On your negative the weight will get lighter and as you push it gets heavier. FUCKING KILLER

my bench hasnt gone anywhere since i was 21ish.

lol what?? no i dont... ???

start to do dumbell presses lay off bench for 5 months.. i know some guys egos cant handle it.. dumbells give u a better chest imo....
after 5 months go back to bench.. and you will see the big improvement in your bench...

well...I do have to admit that in order to move forward with my benching I will have to get a spotter....I agree with you that it's probably the only way of getting over this hump...I don't think I am on the weaker side because then everyone in my gym would be doing more bench than me...and actually very few are doing as much as I am......my gym is not a big steroid gym.......there are very few guys there that I can see that are outwardly showing the signs of being on gear.....

what im telling you is that its not your training, as long as yoru not training like a pussy...its yoru diet! ive read several posts from you abotu what you eat... every mornign you eat 2 whole eggs and one or two egg whites. :-\ and you made derogeratory comment about the idea that more food=more muscle... and while im not saying that more food does always equate to more msucle, the fact you made such a comment indicates that you dont think eating food has much effective on growth whatsoever..... and also you have spoken out several times before that yout hink a high protein intake is unessecary..... but what im telling you is that your bench will start going up and youll start growing more, only ifyou start eating more protein and more carbs/calories.

yeah man thats all the eggs that i have but my breakfast in its entirety consists of more than that! in terms of protein consumption.. i usually make the 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight rule most of the time, but i dont necessarily think this is necessary for optimum growth. i think there is a big misconception in the efficiency of the human body, and how much protein is needed for a bodybuilder. i think many gym enthusiasts consume in gross excess.. but whatever, thats neither here nor there.
maybe we got off on the wrong foot with the protein bullshit...if you truly think an increase in carbs and protein will help my bench, then thanks for your advice.

ahhh i dont wanna get into all this specific bullshit but i try to keep meals balanced with a 50-30-20 carb protein fat ratio give or take 5. i usually get in 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, and I try my best to meet RDA for all vitamins and minerals which can be hard.
