Haney wasn't that special for his time - he got lucky because he was only up against the little guys like Labrada, Gaspari, and Shawn (before he improved). Strydom et al buggered off to the WBF and they were never really a threat.

If you're looking for physiques ahead of their time, think Arnold and no-one else.

Oh brother.  ::)

Looks like I'm upsetting every gimmick account holder this evening.

Give me one good example of how Haney was ahead of his time. Just one.

I saw Lee Haney competing several times. At only 1 of his Mr. Olympia wins de didn`t deserve the title
(1990 Chicago). All other Mr. O Contest he won clearly....

And form the mid 80`s to the early 90`s Lee Haney was without a doubt the "lion of the animal kingdom..."

Glad to see you on the Board, Squad. Was wondering when you'd make it over here ... btw, ever hear of a Bodybuilder by the name of Alex Federov ? How about Frank Zane ? ;)

The reason I brought up those 2 Names is because those are the 2 Names usually brought up in a conversation when the words, " Overrated Bodybuilder " are tossed around ... not Haney. Funny that you think a Man who Won 8 Sandows was " overrrated ". :-\

i definitely have to agree with squadfather on this one. i never saw what was so great about lee haney. sergio olivia absolutely crushes him in almost every single pose. so does dorain, ronnie, and jay would beat him as well.

Ok. So let me get this straight ... so I understand correctly. You agree ( with Squadfather ) that Haney was the most " overrated Bodybuilder EVER " ... please take notice that Squadfather used the Word " ever ". Now ... taking careful consideration of what I just said ... do you still agree with Squadfather and his original statement regarding Haney ?

Every decade has there best Bodybuilders..."Steve Reeves", "John Grimek","Bill Pearl", "Reg Park", "Larry Scott", "Sergio Oliva", "Arnold Schwarzenegger", "Lee Haney", "Dorian Yates", "Ron Coleman",
and i would never say that one of these was totally overrated. All these are still great legends....

Not to defend Squad, but that logic is completely fouled.  Can you cook a 5 star meal at 5 star restaurant?  Can you design the next supercar from Ferrari?  Just because you can't do those things, does that mean you can't comment on them?  Of course not.  If I went to a 5 star restaurant and thought the food was shit, just because I'm not a chef does that mean my opinion is automatically invalidated?  No.  But by your logic because Squad and 98% of the people on this board have not competed in BB comps their opinions are somehow invalid?

Some really sound logic there bub =)

haney was the man when I got into BB back in the day, I understand why he won the shows he won cause he was so much bigger than everyone else, I'd say he was untouchable 84-86, 87 he was a little off but Gaspari came in waaay to big and his waist was huge, Christian was off and Labrada was just coming into his own.  88 was a close call, Gaspari, Demay, Labrada and a few other guys were great....Christian skipped that year and he was awsome in the earlier shows...

89, I'd have given it to Labrada, he was so f'n good it was shocking, totally ripped, detailed...no missing bodyparts, only problem was he was short and I don't think that should matter that much.  90 Haney got a total gift, Labrada beat him and he didn't even nail it IMO.  Christian and Ray were awsome, either could have been 1st or 2nd, labrada 3rd and Haney at best 4th....BUT, Benfatto looked incredible that year.

91 haney won hands down but he wouldn't have beaten dorian in 92.

just my 0.02

Haney WAS ahead of his time. Evidence- 8 X Mr. Olympia.  You don't win the Olympia 8 times in a decade without being ahead of your time.

In today's standards his physique is not as impressive as others, but during his time he was the most massive guy on the Olympia stage with a lat spread that knocked everyone out.

I am not a fan of his physique, but I think Lee Haney does not get much credit or press today for someone that OWNED the Olympia stage for a decade.

May the Force be with you!

Haney had such a small waist.  His back was as wide as a doorway.  Definitely one of the best physiques ever displayed.  Alot of people talk about Ronnie, Dorian, and Arnold on getbig.  They seem to forget that Lee has a record of eight sandows only equalled by Ronnie.

FFS, have you looked at those Haney pics? That taper, the action-figure proportions? The rock-hard density? The vascularity?

Also, remember Haney beat Sergio in '84 (surely a before-his-time physique too?) and Dorian in '91. Are those little guys?

The guy is right, Haney seems to be largely overlooked in BB history. Maybe because he wasn't one for shooting his mouth off.

had and incredible torso structure that developed great pecs and sick back, delts were good enough, and arms were not great but good enough to hang off that back ,legs were so/so but his last olympia he showed some good wheels against yates with good seperation and very hard for the last run.his fellow top competitors just didn't have his structure or shape ,gaspari lacked that structure and shape but his condition was off the charts but that was not good enough, labrada great shape but haney outmassed him, demey great look too small, bannout same as demey, christian could hang size and shape wise but really no legs and sometimes he dogged it,good thread to a classic bber.

I'm not convinced by Haney being one of the greatest ever.  He didn't really have any outstanding features.  OKay he had good shape, good size, good conditioning etc.  It all tied in to make a good bodybuilder at the time, but when compared with legends accross the ages, I don't feel he was amazing.

Would be good to have some video comparing him to others at the time.  Who else was around back then that was really amazing?
Title: Re: another look at one of the most incredible bodybuilders ever. THOUGHTS?
Post by: natural al on February 05, 2008, 06:19:37 AM
nobody had a torso like lee haney back then, his chest, shoulders, traps and back were incredible.  He lost ground in the legs department and his arms just looked small when compared to his gigantic torso.  His waist was always tiny.  When he competed he was in the 250lbs range, his closest competitor was Gaspari-for the most part-and lee had like 40lbs on him.  Labrada was much more complete and really should have won in 89 and 90 but aside from those 2 shows nobody was in Lee's league.  Christian almost got there the year he won the Pro World but he never brought that type of shape to the olympia, same could be said about Ron Love who was comparable to Lee in terms of bodyweight but never brought his best package to the olympia.

Agreed; he had a great great torso but to be great overall the arms and legs would've matched, and they didn't. He won that many Olympias thanks to a dearth of great competition and the politics inherent in the IFBB, in which personality also counts for a lot. Haney had that.

He was not ahead of his time, no.

Using the number of wins as reasoning is ass-backwards, since there are numerous factors for who is permitted to win in the IFBB.

Great lat to waist ratio, completely ignoring the fact the arms and legs never matched that impressive torso.

Again, using the numbers of Olympias won is faulty logic that ignores the reality of contest politics. Using that weak logic he was more than 8 times better than Bertil Fox and his idol Robby Robinson combined, which is crap.

He beat Oliva when Oliva was in his 40s. With Haney's lack of balance and weak arms he'd never have beaten either Oliva or Haney's idol Robby Robinson in fair shows bereft of politics, actually.

Haney overlooked in BB history? lol actually it's the opposite. How many just rely on mentioning his number of wins as sufficient evidence that he was great? Too many.

This is the kind of great guy Haney is .......

About a year before he won the Oly, he guest posed at one of our contests. Before going on stage he asked me to give him an honest critique on how he looked and how he could improve in order to win the Olympia title.

Since he was no where near contest condition, it was a difficult request to abide by but I did see one basic but noticeable flaw which had to be corrected before he stepped on the Oly stage.

And it was very simple but often overlooked by the amateurs as well as by the pros.

"Lee, you have to hit your bicep shots so that the judges sitting below the level of the stage can see the whole bicep at its best advantage instead of merely holding your bicep shot so that they can only see the flexed tricep. Don't pose for the fans in the back row! Throw every shot directly at the judges!"

He listened intently and made the effort to thank me immediately after he won the title, stating that he personally felt that that piece of basic advice was a major factor in his winning the contest.

I but Lee up there among the best in the game - along with Bill Pearl and Larry Scott and a couple of others I can't name at present.

Lee Haney was fantastic. Those who disagree haven't the experience or mature eye to spot aesthetics and proportioned and detailed muscularity. As well, Haney was one of the sport's biggest at that time. He crushed his peers routinely with his size and density.

He is a gentleman, too.

haney wasn't monumentally bigger than anyone else, but the fact remains that he's pretty much the only guy that both the ironagers and the current crop can agree was incredible. he had the freakish taper and proportions (aside from lagging arms) to make the modern crew happy, but the tight waist and posing to satisfy the older guys.

Haney took advantage of being the best in the era he competed and that is all he could do, be the best of his time. I met Lee a few times and even trained back with him at the original "Animal Kingdom" in Atlanta. One of the nicest bodybuilders and people I have ever met.

We finished back with shrugs with the bar behind not in front. His advice, go light and let the bar hang for 3 seconds. The growth happens on the down not on the up for traps. we never went over 135.

Great guy, awesome person....respect.

Anybody not impressed by Lee never saw him in contest shape in person. I was at Gold's Venice and saw Gary Strydom doing a photoshhot for FLEX a couple of days after the '88 Olympia. I remember being very impressed by Gary's size and conditioning. That is until Lee walked in a little while later.

A little while later Lee walked in to do a shoot of his own. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him. I'll admit to being less than impressed with Lee in magazines. And as I told him, pictures didn't do him justice. And they didn't. The thickness and density of Lee in contest shape blew me away. You could hide a quarter in the cleft between his pecs. And his lats were so thick they were U shaped. From the side his front to back thickness was amazing, as was his muscle density. His accolades were well deserved in my opinion.

On top of that, he was the nicest, most humble guy you'd ever want to meet. A great representative to his sport. And he signed my lifting belt as well.

( and to make money too) every generation thinks that their generation was the best. arnold and sergio were truely the only ones that were way ahead of their time. even today their bodies are far far better then anything that came after them . the 70s had the best bodies. but if you grew up with what modern bodybuilding you will think todays are best. lol. bunch of bloated pregnant bald headed goof balls. they all look the exact same.

This dude has abs long before anyone thought to call them that. To say he's the father of modern bodybuilding actually diminishes just how amazing sandow at his peak was one of the most famous people in other he looked like a movie star long before he became one. The columbu physique was said to be so impressive that he may have he is largely considered zane's abs to be the best that ever appeared on stage.  Overtime the exercise become a bit to popular and they end up vastly overrated, but keep it mind that overrated does not means bad. It simply means there are better choice than those that are currently popular.
