I have three of his books. One thing for sure people who are fans of HIT are fanatical in their beliefs. It's really hard having a conversation with a Jones, Mentzer or Darden follower. It's like they are religious zealots. Early on in the 70's I read every thing Arthur Jones wrote. I have his original book put together with staples. I tore out everything Mentzer wrote and put it in a binder. I still have it. Maybe the most comprehensive collection on Mentzer. Even trained pure Nautilus for awhile.
Now I realize that intensity isn't the magic bullet of muscle growth. Muscles grow best with training for muscular endurance for lack of a better term. Most guys that pursue that intensity soon find they have to miss workouts due to exhaustion. Then they claim they are so advanced they only need one training session every 7 to 10 days. Most look like crap. If intensity was the magic bullet we would all be training doing sets of one rep because that's the highest intensity you can do.
I will give Jones this. He took volume training champs then had them train a couple of weeks in Florida to claim their success as his own. Sergio is a prime example. He trained with a ton of volume. Went to Florida for a couple of weeks then Jones claimed his physique was a result of Nautilus. When Sergio left Florida he went back to training with volume and got into his best ever condition in the same year, 1972. Casey in his best condition trained with over 15 sets a body part. Many saw him in the gym doing the same and even Mentzer said Casey was doing volume. Joe Means was the poster boy for Nautilus and he trained with giant sets, super sets and tri sets with volume.
