Title: Do you believe that going to college is a right or a privilege?
Post by: El Diablo Blanco on November 14, 2012, 12:39:05 PM
I am sick of these news stories about poor mexicans complaining about how expensive college is.  Since when is it anyone's right to go to college?  I worked my ass off to pay for it.  I never expected anyone to pay for me.  if I didn't have the money I wasn't going to go, plain and simple.  But today every fucking kid thinks it's their right to go.  they don't understand the socieconomic hierarchy that society wouldn't function without the blue collar type jobs.  Everyone wants to be an exec but no one wants to lift no heavy ass weights.

If a country wants to maximize the potential of its people than college should be cheap

People should be allowed into universities based on intelligence, talent, ... An entrance test should be done to see if people have enough intrinsic qualities. Having to pay for college is retarded. It should not be a blue collar environment and blue collars should be kept out by all means.

I was constantly annoyed by the lack of analytic insight of many of my college-peers. The system is so that anyone who works hard can succeed (easily). That is the inverse of what it should be imo.

Kinda agree. Talents need to be taken into account and built upon.

having an expensive education system divides the classes

a state desired by the elite ruling classes

not true.  some are incapable of working hard, just like some are stupid.  i'm guessing you're so quick to emphasize intelligence because this is your "strong point".

George Washington wanted all colleges in America to be free and accessible to anyone.  His major goal was setting up a Nationalized College System.  Sadly, it never came into fruition.

I agree college should be free all one is doing is memorizing a fucking book or two, no hard manual labor is done, they could teach outside around a got damn bonfire for crying outloud

its the "system' that is pillaging everyone making them think they need to pay money to learn some "things"

The best means of forming a manly, virtuous, and happy people will be found in the right education of youth. Without this foundation, every other means, in my opinion, must fail.
George Washington, letter to George Chapman, December 15, 1784

Countries can only provide the opportunities.....only people can decide if they want to maximize their potential.

College is about a piece of paper that lets a person draw a higher salary, like a dollar per hour pedigree, people stopped trying to be the best they could be in the 1980's.

Very good point, and I remember asking my social studies teacher about this in 7th grade.  Where will the HVAC people, welders, carpenters, of tomorrow come from?  We have a really big/nationally known public trade school nearby yet going there is never ever mentioned in our school system for some reason.  WTF?

In most places in the world, the rich and educated rule, and they tend to go hand in hand with each other. I wonder why?
I think it's a privilege, not a right...people want things, everything handed to them...
Next, people will think it's their "right" to have a license. This has got to stop, it's gone too far...

Nowadays, nobody "earns" a grade, they are "given" a grade. And parents set their children up, by demanding that children be "given" an "A" or they will move their kids to a class they are "given" the grade. Also, every kid is "above average"....you see, this starts from an early age, and now said kids are growing up, and believe that they deserve everything...

thus more people will be smarter and not be in any debt , they can there on go to perform said job skills that they passed on the test

College being free is a misnomer.  Who pays for the professors, buildings etc..?  Let me guess the government. Imagine the gov dictating what you should learn.  Then what?  Raise taxes so everyone can go to college.  Imagine that cost.

Isn't that what Germany does?

Don't they have "free" university/college, but an income tax rate 20% higher than the U.S.?

Fuck that......I'm tired of paying for the Wiggs' of society.

Do you gentlemen understand how many lost opportunities this formerly great country has lost out on because college put a common man in debt?  Paying for college essentially turns into wasting a resource. People spend 20 years + to pay off those stupid loans and look at the percent of people that work in the field in which they have their degree...Lower than most would think.

Assuming you can test into it, college and trade schools should be free. It's an investment into your economy.  And like others said, paying essentially creates class warfare.

Are you aware that professors are overpaid for the most part and earn more money by just merely showing up.  Most don`t even have classes but 3 days a week and then they get paid for a sabbatical-sometimes lasting over a year or two.

Every University has professors that are making six figure salaries and they really don`t do a whole lot for the most part.

College is too expensive as it is. The textbooks are a perfect example.  But making it free is of course impossible. Someone has to pay. I think what we have going now is good, federal loans for anyone who gets accepted and they don't have to he paid back till after graduation and monthly payments capped at 15 or 20% of income (can't remember the precise number) and debt forgiven after 20 years of paying every month.

unfortunately even a college degree does not equal a college degree.

A genius with a degree from chico state college will always lose out to a schlub who's daddy paid for him to go to Harvard.  It's just a fact.  The name is worth more than the degree.

I lost a job that I was perfect for.  I had all the right experience, the hiring manager thought I was perfect for the role and the culture of the company but the VP who approves the hire said he wanted someone with a better college pedigree like Harvard or Yale.  WTF does it matter the college if I proved that my experience is perfectly suited for the job?

Bottomline is, this is what happens when capitalism creeps its ugly head into every aspect of society. Profit becomes the bottomline, quality falters and quantity becomes the name of the game.  Unless you are an elite or ivy league school.  There's no reason there shouldn't be more schools like these except for money and money equals opportunity.  It's sad really, all of this over greed and control.

Essentially keeping colleges expensive maintains a class divide.
For the rich paying the tuition fees is nothing.
For the average joe it truly is an investment, and often they have to work demeaning jobs on the side to support it--stripping, Burger King etc.

College should free or else very cheap.

it's funny, probably 75% of the coursework at my college (department) was developed by 3-4 professors, while the other 20 or so steal all of the material wholesale, but of course say "thanks."

they don't actually make very much (state college so the records are public, I believe the average was something like $60-70k), but it's still odd how they can seem so busy when you know they appropriated every material they "teach".

If the Federal Governement stopped backing loans college educations would have to face market forces and lower their costs to attract students.  College is expensive precisely because the government interrupts the price discovery mechanism.

When competition thrives the consumer/student wins.  Monopolies exist because of tacit or direct government support.
