I love how he trained barefoot. that's so hardcore.
what's funky? never seen a vertical leg press?
-
never seen a vertical leg press?
never seen that device in my entire life
-
I loved the Vert. So comformtable. I always imagined if I got under a car I could lift it. They were big back in the 70's and early 80's
-
that's the OLD leg press. nobody does them any more cause they're much better with the new machine that's 45 degree angled. some say the invention of the better leg press machine is one of the factors of leg improvement in bodybuilding.
-
ronnie does them in his new movie
-
never seen that device in my entire life
They went out with the hula hoop and roller skates..........Arnold only trained legs on the vertical leg press for the 1980 Mr. O-and only used 400# for reps.......
My buddy Hurricane BEEF! still uses this device with his Hammer Strength and Nautilus equipment.
The BEEF!

Pretty old school device.
Only problem is....you fail the lift.....good luck getting out from it.
-
monster triceps.

They're still around. There was a fairly new one at the college weight room I used to train in.
-
They still have one at Diamond Gym in New Jersey. Can't say I've seen it used very often in recent years. Diamond is probably one of the few old-school gym, hardcore gyms left.
-
FWIW, The exact vertical leg press Arnold is using in the photo, was at Gold's Venice for many years. Good piece... old school but good. I'm pretty sure it went to Gold's Las Vegas in 97'-98'? I think it had a little plaque on it that mentioned it's history.
-
If you actually watch Ronnie's new video "On the Road" he actually uses one of those in australia! Funkiest piece of equipment, and how it works, I've ever seen.
What's funnier though is the fact that Ronnie couldn't even fit in the machine properly :o
-
They were big back in the 70's and early 80's
so were u from what i hear lol
have you seen the pic where the guy is balancing a loaded barbell on his feet and pressing it? Fukkin suicidal
-
Yeah, they still make those things; the owner of the gym i'm at ordered one last year (don't know why, no one ever uses it. Lost money on that one.) Ya can only bring it down to a certain point so at least you won't get crushed under it.

You must be a new Arnold fan. He's forever doing those.
-
I've used one of those original style leg press machines years ago. Not the smoothest in the world but still functional. Sprayed a little WD40, or other forms of lubrications, for a better mental on mental action. You twist those side stops and the wood foot platform (the one I used was a wood platform) only goes down so far. There is a wedge shaped support for the back but we also placed folded up moving pads on top of it for better bracing of the back. Used it also for tricep (close hand positions) bench presses and some times inclines, not bad really. Can do tricep extensions to. Did seated military press on it for a different feel. Can only get so many plates on it so I did a lot of one legged presses. Can also do calf raises (reversed). Good Luck.
-
I used to love doing those. The first time I tried one was around 1977. Used the shit out of one in the early mid 80's too, till' the gym sold. Had all the original equipment that gold's did back in the day( same maker) great stuff. Better than any of the new stuff imo.
-
My gym has a new version of this machine. It's excellent - seems to be easier on the knees than the 45 degree version. I seem to remember reading that Vince Taylor is big on these.
-
I'm really surprised so many of you have never seen this machine. I loved it too. So comformtable for me. Now I could squeeze into it. I like this pic of Arnold
-
sometimes its better not to stop and read a tread for i remember training on one in HS and at a bulldog gym when i was a young guy.make you feel old.
-
doesn't cutler use that press still. i thought there was photo shoot of him a couple years back with him using one. i have personally never even seen one before.
-
what's nice about the VERT is that because the weight is at 90 degrees to the floor you are lifting 100% OF THE WEIGH... basically it's the same as a seated leg press but you spend less time loading and unloading 8)
-
We have one identical to that at my gym...nobody uses it. i tried it out a few times.

Here is a crazy leg press

yeah, that shit rolls the wrong way and it's lights out
-
That has got to be the craziest thing i've EVER seen.
-
I try that 90' when Sebia haven't gym like today. Its danger and fun at same time. ;D

I mean this as absolutely no offence to the younger guys on here, but to hear you say that you've never seen this type of leg press really puts into prospective just how long I've been training (since 12 years old and a total of 32years). As far as I'm concerned that was one of the best leg machines around........God the memories :'(..........all good memories!!
We had one of these when I was training at Bill Pearls gym in Pasadena in the mid to late 70's. With that machine there was virtually no way to cheat, it was all legs or you got buried, no way to bail out if you got stuck......awesome machine!!

Yes I too loved this machine. At the original World Gym it was great. No back problems and you could really concentrate on your legs without having to worry about bad form going down or hurting your back. And when you were done with a set you just lay there till your next.

It's called the vertical leg press machine. You don’t know about it because they don't carry it in most gyms any more. I bought one of those machines two weeks ago, and love it. Makes you quads really bulge out and it's great for space if you don’t have any. I bought the Yukon version, that's the best I found. It supports your head and lower back. This is the one I bought.

Used one in the 70s, nothing special. For leg press the Universal seated leg press was and still is great and used leverage way ahead of machine now out on the market. The thigh burn was brutal.

it looks humbling; doesn't look like you can handle a lot of weight.

Used one in the 70s, nothing special; for leg press the Universal seated leverage leg press was and still is great. The most effective design on that machine; the burn was insane.
The Universal bench and military press are some of the best machine presses around, I miss those 4 sided universal stations.

LOL....I remember we had that multi-stationed machine when I was in high school!

Yep we had the same one too. Got allot of use.

Some of the early muscle beach guys from Venice died fairly recently around the same time, including Joe Gold and Harold Zinkin, inventor of the Universal Gym. First multi-station gym developed surprisingly early, at the start of the 60s. They both knew Jack Lalanne.

why would you say this?
and with such certainty?
The image came from the BOOK Pumping Iron (1974)

That's Wilbur Miller, who held the world record in the deadlift during the early 60's. The barbell leg press was actually the most popular leg exercise at one time.

I hope no one's taking that pic seriously; very unlikely that it's real-far too dangerous not to mention mindless.
To even get close to making sense there'd be two or more spotters paying close attention, but even then...

Can we do calf raises on a vertical leg press ?
-
I never got the same pump or burn doing vertical presses, with the blood running down out of the legs while exercising.
-
Can we do calf raises on a vertical leg press ?
Yes
-
Chris Cormier recently injured his back on the vertical leg press, bad enough to be hospitalized, so it is dangerous. 45 degree press is much safer.
-
flex wheeler did the vertical leg press in bfto 1996..i was really amazed that flex was doing that tough shit.usually he never does those workouts which demand strength..flex was lazy
-
i used to love that press. I used it back in 94-96 in middle school. It was the first time i ever used heavy weights on legs.
