It keeps the sheep in line. Among the people NOT paying their income tax, there is no way the US government can go after all of them. They need to make examples every now and then and that includes high profile examples like Wesley Snipes. It is a victory in that people will falsely believe there is a reason to fear [on average] punishment for not paying your income taxes. If Americans didn't have to give so much to the IRS, we'd save more, be in less debt, be more self-reliant, etc.
While i don't live in America, in Australia if the majority (85%+) didn't pay so much tax they would spend it on material things, and then since they thought they'd have more money coming in, spend even more money on credit than they do now.
They would end up in more debt and probably fuck the economy up even more as since they are earning more money, feel they can work less and make us less of an economic force.

He would go around and be an expert witness in court cases and get the people off from having to pay taxes. He would offer $100,000 to anyone who could show where it says you as an individual had to pay income tax. there is no law anywhere that says that. People get in trouble because they lie on their tax forms.

Well, there's no excuse for not paying taxes so he has to be punished (and pay the back taxes). However, I don't think he'll get 3 yrs. Our jails are already too crowded. The legal system should be finding alternative punishments for non-violent crimes.
Wealthy people like Snipes pay a ridiculous % in taxes, I don't blame him for not wanting to pay, he deserves more of his own $. Thats why we have to change our gov so its easier to cut spending than raise taxes.
